In Spite of Pressure, Lawyer Defends Dafa Practitioner Zhang Qiyong in Illegal Trial in Chongqing City

(Clearwisdom.net) Zhang Qiyong, a Dafa practitioner from Qijiang County, Chongqing City, is facing an illegal trial, and his lawyer, Wang Ruirong, faces pressure for defending a Falun Gong case.

Since the persecution of Falun Gong started on July 20,1999 in China, lawyers have not been allowed to defend Falun Gong practitioners. Although there are court-appointed lawyers, they are only allowed to conduct a "defense" in accordance with pre-determined results ordered by the court. They are not allowed to raise objections to the public prosecutor's arguments. If they don't comply, they risk invalidation of their right to practice law, revocation of their license, and even detention. In some places, a few lawyers are allowed to accept Falun Gong cases, but this is only for show.

Dafa practitioner Zhang Qiyong was arrested near the Botanical Garden in Yubei District, Chongqing City on May 1, 2004. By now, he has been detained for four months in cell 19 of the Qijiang County (Development District) Detention Center, along with death row inmates and hardened criminals. He has been shackled, handcuffed and administered the "Death Bed" torture. (For a detailed description of this and other forms of torture used on Dafa practitioners, see http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2001/11/24/16156.html) and http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2002/2/3/18368.html).

Zhang Qiyong's family took pains to employ Wang Ruirong from the Ruihai Law Office in Chongqing City. When the lawyer asked to see her client, the detention center dodged, evaded, and stalled for time using all sorts of excuses. When Wang Ruirong met Zhang Qiyong for the first time in the detention center on June 1, 2004, she asked the guards to remove his shackles and handcuffs, not to treat her client like a death row inmate, and not to torture him again.

Lawyer Wang Ruirong, who is more than 70 years old, made her reputation defending people who were branded as criminals simply for having fallen out of favor politically with the regime.

On the 4th of June, the police from Qijiang County Police Department threatened Zhang Qiyong's stepmother, Wang Zaifen, and made her sign a document facilitating the arrest of Zhang Qiyong. The police harassed Wang Zaifen and other family members of Zhang Qiyong, again and again using the pretext of "investigating and collecting evidence." They even forced Zhang Qirong's father, who is a train conductor, out of his job.
