Taiwan Central News Agency Reports Arrest of Chinese Spy Who Collected Information About Falun Gong Practitioners for Beijing

(Clearwidom.net) According to a report written by Luis Huang from Central News Agency on September, the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB) of Taiwan announced Tuesday that a Taiwanese man who had retired from an intelligence agency was arrested that same day on suspicion of spying for mainland China.

The reported stated that Liao Hsien-ping, a former intelligence agent, emigrated to the Philippines where he served as a representative for several Taiwan-based manpower recruitment service companies. He later headed for Hong Kong to take part in a mainland Chinese Ministry of State Security-sponsored information collection training program, a MJIB official said. In August 2000, Liao returned to Taiwan and began to collect information for Beijing, according to the official, who added that he also traveled regularly to Hong Kong and Macau to brief Beijing officials on his work and received rewards from the Beijing authorities.

According to the report, officials noted that in the initial stage, Liao collected information about Falun Gong practitioners' activities, Taiwan's presidential elections and domestic political parties' publicity and major news events culled from newspapers. The official further said that Liao provided a name list of Taiwan Falun Gong practitioners to the Beijing authorities thus making it impossible for some of them to enter Hong Kong to attend the 2004 Hong Kong Falun Gong Exchange Meeting held May 1-2.
