I am Ke Langsheng, a Falun Dafa practitioner in Maoming, Guangdong Province. I started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. I was arrested on December 19, 2000 by agents from the Political Security Section of the Futian Police Department in Shenzhen when my fellow practitioners and I gathered to share our experiences about the practice. I was detained in the Futian Police Station for 3 days. The agents there asked me to call my friends to take me home. I knew this was a trap to expose where I lived. They pretended to drive me back home but could not find the place. They drove around the area and took me back to the police station again. Then, I was sent to Futian Detention Center for 15 days of detention for being a security threat for having an "illegal gathering." On the 13^th day, they changed my detention status from "administrative offense" to "criminal offense." I asked an agent in the police station what crimes I had committed. He said, "It's not that I want to persecute you, it is from above." I did not cooperate to sign the warrant issued for my detention. Then he asked detention center officers to sign, but no one dared to, because they all knew it was against the law. He finally found a detainee to be sent to a forced labor camp to forge my signature.

While in the detention center, I was forced to do slave labor for 18 hours a day. Sometimes, I was forced to remain an additional 3 hours on duty. Because of the intensive labor, my fingers became deformed, and cracks developed on my skin, which bled profusely. A guard spotted me practicing the Falun Gong exercises once and ordered one of the inmates to pour a bucket of ice water over my head. At that time, the weather was very chilly, and I was soaked. The guard threatened that if he saw me practicing again, all the inmates would only have rice to eat as punishment.

Two months later, I was taken back to the Hongqi Police Station by agents from both the Maoming Police Department and the Hongqi Police Station. The police demanded my family members to pay them a few thousand yuan in exchange for my release. My family paid them the money but they did not release me. After an additional 20 days of detention, they sent me to a brainwashing center. Eighty yuan was charged per day for so-called meals consisting of a small rice bun, scraps and what was left over from feeding the criminal inmates. The practitioners were forced to be accompanied by family members while being held at the brainwashing center. My family could not afford such expensive meals, so the 610 Office ordered its members to stop providing me any meals at all. After that, my family brought me three meals each day. About a dozen days later, the authorities deceived me and took me to the No. 2 Detention Center in Maoming. They said I would live under surveillance for 6 months and asked me to sign the paperwork. I said to the detention center staff members, "This is too much! I just tried to be a good person and you threw me in jail. I do not accept what you are doing." I asked the 610 Office agent why he persecuted and deceived me by transferring me to this prison. He said, "We can deal with Falun Gong practitioners anyway we like." Thus, I was illegally detained there for 8 months and subjected to severe mental and physical abuses.

In January 2002, I was transferred from the prison of the Maonan Police Department to the Maoming City Legal School, a brainwashing center. I asked the director why they still had not released me. He said, "I don't know your status, you have to ask your Neighborhood Administration Office and local police station." When my family visited me, they told me they were forced to pay the 610 Office several thousand yuan for my food, which I thought was extortion.

During the period when I was detained in the brainwashing center, I was subjected to all kinds of inhumane treatment. I was subjected to torture tactics such as severe beatings, being hung up by the handcuffs, being verbally abused, etc. I was hung up with handcuffs over 100 times, with the most severe experience of going 2 days without food. The 610 Office agents even ordered the guards to suspend me high in the air with handcuffs on. I said to the guard, "If anything happens to me, you are responsible." The guard did not pay any attention to me. He started punching me in the back and stomach, and then banged my head against the wall many times. I fell to the ground unconscious. Later, the guard poured cold water on me to revive me.

A few days later, I started to experience severe spasms throughout my body after enduring all the physical abuse. They took me to the hospital emergency room in an ambulance. After the emergency treatment, the 610 Office agent asked the doctor if I was still in critical condition. The doctor told him that I would survive. Then, they asked two guards to take me back to the brainwashing center again. One time, I asked why they arrested people so readily. He said, "We can do whatever we like to you. We are given the power to do this from above. We are not responsible if we beat you." The other 610 Office agents said, "If we beat you to death, it is just like a dog dying." I asked him why they broke the law while they were supposed to enforce the law. He said, "I am the law. You have to listen to what I say. Otherwise, you will be punished."

In December 2003, I was transferred to the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Law by the 610 Office, police station, and the Neighborhood Administration Office. Agents at the institution brutally tortured me in order to try to force me to give up my belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance." They even used fake articles and claimed they were written by our Teacher to deceive me. I know that Falun Dafa is good in my heart, so they could not deceive me. While there, I was subjected to verbal abuse, threats, coercion, and brainwashing.

On June 10, 2004, I was taken back to the Maoming Legal School by the 610 Office agents. In the afternoon, my family members came and took me home. I wrote a report documenting my persecution, including the mental and physical mistreatment, human rights violations, loss of career and finances, and also the implication of my relatives for practicing Falun Gong. I submitted my documents to the relevant government units, requesting the perpetrators to compensate me and assist me to find housing and career placement. I never got any replies. Due to financial hardships, I had to leave home to find a job, but the 610 Office and the Neighborhood Administration Office demanded that I come back. They also forced my family members to restrict my freedom. Several unidentified cars, perhaps from the 610 Office, showed up at my parents' business. They forced my parents to pressure me to go back to the brainwashing center. My father said, "My son was persecuted to such an extent, and you still won't leave him alone. What else do you want?" Once in a while, collaborators from the Neighborhood Administration Office still go to my parents' business to harass them.
