Canada: Member of Parliament Writes to Prime Minister Concerning the Persecution of Falun Gong in China on the Occasion of Hu Jintao's Visit to Canada
(Clearwisdom.net) On August 26, 2005, Mr. Bill Siksay,
Member of Parliament of Canada, wrote to Prime Minister Paul Martin, on the
occasion of Hu Jintao's visit to Canada, concerning the persecution of Falun
Gong practitioners in China and about reports of espionage, hate incitement,
intimidation, and harassment from Chinese agents and consular officials against
Falun Gong practitioners in Canada. August 26, 2005 The Right Hon Paul Martin, PC, MP Dear Prime Minister, I am writing to express my concerns about the upcoming visit
of President Hu Jingtao and to urge you to publicly express to the visiting
leader of China, the Canadian public's concern over the continuing violation of
human rights in China. I am particularly concerned about the persecution of Falun
Gong practitioners, which has been documented by the UN and many human rights
organizations. I urge you to help secure the release of the 18 practitioners
with Canadian ties, who are being held illegally in various detention centers
and labour camps in China. I am also concerned about reports of espionage, hate
incitement, intimidation, and harassment from Chinese agents and consular
officials against Falun Gong practitioners here in Canada. As a democratic
society, Canada must ensure that these violations are stopped and all human
rights are upheld. It is important that President Hu realizes that Canada
respects justice, democracy and supports human rights and that this is the
underpinning to sustain long-term stability and prosperity in our trade and
economic partnership with China. I believe Canada's responsibility is clear and
our voice is critical in bringing an end to systemic persecution in China and on
our own soil. I look forward to your early reply on this urgent matter. Sincerely, Bill Siksay, MP Posting date: 9/3/2005 |
