Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners at Fushun City Detention Center Exposed in Detail (Photos)
(Clearwisdom.net) Fushun City Detention Center has been involved in
the persecution of Falun Gong since 1999. So far, at least six Falun Dafa
practitioners were directly tortured to death at Fushun City Detention Center
and many are suffering long term illegal imprisonment and brutal torture.
Numerous practitioners' lives are in danger. In addition, Fushun City Detention
Center coerces Falun Dafa practitioners to participate in forced heavy labor. The following article provides in-depth information on the topics listed

district, Fushun City. Fushun City Detention Center's previous address was
Jiangjun area, Shuncheng district. During the second half of 2003, Fushun City
Detention Center was moved to its present address. Relevant reports from

detention center The detention center is built in a valley. The outer walls are built with red
bricks that follow the curves of the mountain. The walls surround the buildings
inside of the detention center (in the picture, there was a row of military
trucks with cloth covers driving out of the detention center. Usually those
trucks are used to transport the detainees). This picture shows the entire

the detention center can be seen. Further away are residential areas. Despite the green vegetation, flowers and ponds on the outside, inside the
detention center Falun Gong practitioners are tortured and abused there. *Fushun City Detention Center's Detention Unit In the photo, the white wall surrounding the nearby area is one of the
detention units (there are two guard towers on top of the wall. In the distance,
there is another detention unit behind the office building. It was not possible
to captured it in the photo. Only the three guard towers can be seen. Falun Dafa
practitioners are illegally detained in these two places. *Fushun City Detention Center's Previous Location Fushun City Detention Center's previous address was Jiangjun area, Shuncheng
district (Five Falun Dafa Practitioners were Tortured to Death there). A. Death caused by torture 1. Wei Zaixin---died from brutal abuse Wei Zaixin was sixty three years old and was a high ranking engineer at
Liaoning Province Fushun City Science Advanced Studies Academy. On February 7,
2002, he was arrested, beaten and was forced to "confess" by policemen
from Liaoning Province Fushun City Police Department Division One and Liangzhan
Street Police Station. After being tortured for a whole night, he was sent to a
"Strict Monitoring" class at Fushun City Forced Labor Camp. In June 2002, policemen from Jiangjun Police Station sent Wei Zaixing to
Fushun City Detention Center Number 2. Police ordered prisoners to beat Wei
Zaixing. The police refused to let his family visit him or bring him clothes.
After he was tortured with long term poisoning, ulcers covered all Wei Zaixing's
body. Wei Zaixin was also made to sleep next to the toilet. Prisoners from the
entire prison tormented him by walking and stepping on him. After enduring torture and hardships, Wei Zaixing had nearly lost all ability
to care for himself. Quite often people from the detention center would pull off
Wei Zaixin's underpants, which had stuck to his body from the blood on his
wounds. This caused blood to run down his leg and pool on the floor. Police
instructed prisoners to pay attention to Wei Zaixin's underpants. Whenever the
flesh would stick, they were ordered to yank them off to torment him. This
method was used on him quite often. Under police instructions, prisoners were ordered to increase their cruel
treatment of Wei Zaixin. Prisoners even forced their own body waste down Wei
Zaixin's mouth. Under physical and mental tortures, Wei Zaixin's life became
critically endangered. In July, the police department sent Wei Zaixin to the
city hospital. He was in critical condition and his family was ordered to take
him home. On November 15th, Wei Zaixin passed away. Wei Zaixin was frugal. He used his life savings to print and produce
materials used to clarify the truth of Falun Gong. Fushun city 610 office
personnel used to ask him: "How can you be so stupid as to give away tents
of thousands of yuan to people you don't even know!" Wei Zaixin
said: "You don't know the truth about Falun Gong. If Falun Gong
practitioners need money to make truth clarifying material, I would give them
the money. I want all of you to know about Zhuan Falun. I want all of you
to know that Falun Gong is good and learn the truth." 2. Huang Ke---Tortured to death Mr. Huang Ke, a 31 year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Wanghua district,
Fushun city, Liaoning province was an employee at Fushun Petrochemical
Engineering Research Institute Laboratory No 10. He was arrested in March 2003,
and sent to Detention Center No 1 (located in Jiangjun area, Fushun city) where
he went on hunger strike. He was then sent to a hospital for force-feeding.
Huang Ke resisted and was sent home after ten days. Towards the end of June
2003, he was illegally arrested again by policemen from Fushun City
Wanghua District Guangming Police Station and was detained at Fushun City
Detention Center No 1 (located in Jiangjun area, Fushun city). Once again, Huang
Ke went on hunger strike. There, he was force fed with violence for an extended
period of time and died on July 3rd from torture. Huang Ke was there
for a mere 10 days. Huang Ke's wife Zhong Yunxiu, also a Falun Dafa
practitioner, was tortured to death in October 1999 when she appealed in
Beijing. Currently in the Huang household, the only occupants are their young
child and Huang Ke's elderly parents. 3. Chen Sulan---Beaten to death Ms. Chen Sulan, a 53 year-old, was a Falun Dafa practitioner from Fushun
city, Liaoning province. She was arrested when she went to appeal for the rights
of Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing in December 2001. Two days afterwards,
she was taken back to Fushun City by local police (Fushun City Gaowan Economic
Development District Police Station) and was sent to Fushun City Detention
Center. In less than a week, the police had beaten her to death. 4. Zou Guirong - persecuted to death Ms. Zou Guirong, 36, was a worker at Xinbin County's Public Highway System of
Fushun City, Liaoning Province. Because she refused to renounce her belief in
Falun Dafa, she was detained and brutally tortured at six different locations,
including the Fushun City Forced Labor Camp, Masanjia Forced Labor Camp,
Zhangshi Forced Labor Camp, Shenxin Forced Labor Camp, and the Shenyang City
Dabei Underground Jail Hospital over two years. On April 11, 2002, she and ten
other practitioners were arrested, including Ms. Wang Xiaoyan. They were
detained in Fushun City Detention Center, in Jiangjun district of Fushun city.
They began a hunger strike to protest the illegal persecution and were
force-fed. On April 23, 2002, Ms. Zou injured herself while attempting to escape
from the detention center. She passed away in the Fushun City Hospital. Responsible individuals include guard Zhao Chunyan, an officer named Cai,
etc. 5. Wang Xiuxia - tortured to death Wang Xiuxia, 42, was a practitioner from Qingyuan County, Fushun City,
Liaoning Province. On May 29, 2003, Fushun city police arrested Ms. Wang. She
was brutally tortured and severely injured. Then, she was detained in the Second
Detention Center of Fushun City, in Jiangjun district. Ms. Wang went on a hunger
strike to protest the persecution and was force-fed by police. She was tied to
an iron chair and kept in handcuffs and heavy shackles. She could only sit in
one position and was unable to move her arms or legs. Criminal inmates carried
her out of the cell before and in after the force-feeding. She was then
handcuffed to a radiator beside the bathroom. Because the radiator was very low,
she had to sit on the floor all night. After eight to nine days, she experienced
breathing problems and speaking became difficult. The guards stopped bringing
her out of the cell and removed the handcuffs and shackles. They started her on
intravenous fluids. Inmates beat her and force-fed her at the same time. One day we helped her to go to the restroom. After squatting for a long time
she could not urinate. With great effort she told us that the criminal inmates
had tortured her by pulling out all her pubic hair. She could not urinate
because that area was so swollen. The wicked inmates also pressed a coffee mug
lid to her rib cage and moved it around, which caused excruciating pain. Several
days later, Ms. Wang passed away. On the evening of June 15, Fushun City Police
Department authorities notified Wang Xiuxia's family of her death. When her
family rushed to the police department, they saw that Wang Xiuxia's body was in
a freezer and was misshapen. The police refused to let the family take a close
look at the body and didn't answer their inquiries about the cause of her death.
On the morning of June 17, before her family could view the body, the police
sealed the coffin. 6. Zhou Jicheng - tortured to death Mr. Zhou Jicheng, 50, was a practitioner from Donggou Village, Hada Town,
Fushun County, Liaoning Province. On June 3, 2003, Mr. Zhou was reported and
then arrested by the county public department and Hada Town Police Station. They
took him to the Fushun City Forced Labor Camp. At the end of June 2004, Mr.
Zhou's release date, he was transferred to Luotaishanzhuang Brainwashing Center,
because he refused to sign the guarantee statement.
There, he also could not be reformed. Consequently, he was once again sent back
to Fushun City Detention Center in Nangou district. Given this long-term
persecution, Mr. Zhou's body and mind was severely hurt. His lungs were filled
with fluid and many shadows, indicating advanced stage of an illness. He was
brought home at the end of September 2004. He died on November 5, 2004. B. Cases of Severe Torture 1. Sun Qian -suffered and died from all kinds of torture Mr. Sun Qian, 33, was a practitioner from Wanghua District, Fushun City. On
October 10, 2002, police from the First Division of the Fushun City police
department arrested Mr. Sun for hanging banners and being involved in producing
Falun Dafa truth clarification materials. He was tortured during interrogation,
and then sentenced to nine years in prison. While detained in the Second
Detention Center of Fushun City in Jiangjun district, Mr. Sun suffered severe
mental and physical torture. In the fall of 2003, Mr. Sun was transferred to the
Second Prison of Shenyang City. Mr. Sun died as a result of torture on March 15,
2005. 2. Liu Mingjie - Suffered mental breakdown due to long-term torture Mr. Liu Mingjie, 36, is a practitioner from Wanghua District, Fushun City. He
was arrested and detained at the First Detention Center of Fushun City for
producing and distributing truth clarifying flyers. During his detention, he was
forced to work for long hours. Prisoners often beat him when he couldn't finish
his work quota. He was allowed to sleep only three to four hours daily for eight
months. Then, he was illegally sentenced to three years in the Second Prison of
Shenyang City. Mr. Liu suffered cruel mental and physical torture while in
prison. He was locked in a tiny, solitary cell several times, lasting each time
up to three months. His hip began to fester and his legs became useless.
Finally, he suffered a mental breakdown. 3. Liu Chengyan - persecuted twice to the brink of death Ms. Liu Chengyan is a practitioner from Wanghua District of Fushun City. In
October 2002, Ms Liu was arrested and detained in the Second Detention Center of
Fushun City, Jiangjun district. In July 2003, Ms. Liu lost consciousness and
almost died. On August 29, 2004, while being detained at the Fushun City
Detention Center in Nangou district, Ms. Liu went on a five-week hunger strike
to protest the persecution. She was in critical condition. At the time, several
dozen other practitioners were also detained there. They had been sentenced to
serve more than ten years. Among them, Ms. Liu Chengyan and Qu Cailing were
sentenced to 12 year terms. The jail did not admit them because of their health
condition. They were taken back to the detention center. But the detention
center still would not release them. Her current situation is unknown. 4. Qu Cailing - life endangered due to the persecution Ms. Qu Cailing is 52 years old. She was detained in the Second Detention
Center in Fushun City since October 2002. Because of the long-term persecution,
she suffered from hypertension, heart disease, dizziness and her limbs became
numb. Her life was in great danger. Not only was she refused medical care, but
also sentenced to nine years at a jail in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province in
July 2003. The center refused to accept her, she was taken back to the detention
center. Under required procedure, the detention center should have granted a
medical review to decide if release on bail for medical treatment was warranted.
But the Second Detention Center of Fushun City refused a medical review and took
her to the prison again. Her recent situation is unknown. 5. Xing Yurong - life endangered due to the persecution Ms. Xing Yurong is approximately 40 years old. After being detained in the
Second Detention Center of Fushun City, she suffered severe pulmonary edema,
pleural effusion, and breathing problems. Her life was in danger. In July 2003,
Ms. Xing was illegally sentenced and taken to a jail in Shenyang City, Liaoning
Province despite her health condition. The jail refused to take her due to her
health condition. The Second Detention Center in Fushun City didn't send her to
hospital or grant a medical review, worsening her condition. Finally, due to
outside pressure, the detention center granted a medical review, which was
followed by her release on bail for medical treatment. 6. Wang Pinlan - life endangered due to the persecution Ms. Wang Pinlan lives in Lagu Township in Fushun County, Liaoning Province.
In September 2005, officers from the Xinfu Police Station and the security
department of the Fushun City Chinese Medicine Hospital arrested her for
clarifying the truth about Falun Dafa to patients in the hospital. She was then
detained in the Fushun City Detention Center in Nangou district. Ms. Wang
refused food and water to protest the illegal persecution. She was tortured
until she was in critical condition. As soon as her family found out about her
situation, they questioned officers in the police station and the detention
center. Police at the police station avoided them. Guards in the detention
center replied that they were not aware of Ms. Wang's situation. Her current
situation is unknown. 7. Jia Naizhi - life endangered due to the persecution Ms. Jia Naizhi is 54 years old. She was arrested on October 11, 2002, and
detained in the Fushun City Detention Center. In July 2003, she was illegally
sentenced to 10 years in prison without due process. The Liaoning Provincial
Women's Prison denied admitting her because of her severe illness. Ms. Jia
Naizhi has been held for more than three years in the Second Detention Center of
Fushun City. We learned on July 5, 2005, that Ms. Jia had been on hunger strike
for many days. Her health is deteriorating daily, and she is in danger of dying.
The detention center still refused to release her on bail for medical treatment. 8. He Lizhong - detained despite her health condition Ms. He Lizhong, 60 years old, lives in Fushun city, Liaoning Province. She
was arrested on April 15, 2004 and was sentenced to a 9-year prison term. She is
currently detained at the Second Detention Center of Fushun City, located at
Nangou district in Fushun city. She developed symptoms of hypertension, heart
disease and lost consciousness on and off. She was sent to Shenyang City Prison,
but was not admitted. Her family was told to arrange for her to be released on
bail for medical treatment. The family paid a total of 900 yuan, but the police
have still not released her. Her current situation is unknown. 9. Du Jingqin - tortured on the tiger bench We assume that the following occurred in early December 2002. Detention
center guard Zhao Chunyan ordered prisoners to torture Ms. Du. Prisoners tightly
locked Ms. Du's hands on a tiger bench, tied her feet with shackles and then
beat her. Ma Dan and another prisoner were the worst among them. They stood on
an elevated place, so they could kick her chest and heart area more efficiently.
Ms. Du lost consciousness. It was December and the bench was in the hallway
where there was no heat. She was not allowed to go to the bathroom. It is
unknown how long she had to sit in wet pants and how often she wet her pants.
Her health condition was extremely weak by the day when they released her. Her
left leg was all black and blue from the ankle to the knee. Other parts of her
body were also black and blue. Her face and her lips were swollen. She could
barely open her eyes because of the swelling. Blood was still on her nose and
the corners of her mouth and two of her teeth were broken. Guard Zhao Chunyan and prisoners Zhang Baohua (known to be very cruel), Ma
Dan, Xu Shulan, Li Lili, etc were responsible. Note: more details cannot be provided at this time because of an information
blockade. C. Guard Zhao Chunyan's Crime - "Beat the body parts that are not
visible" Zhao Chunyan, female, is a guard in the Second Detention Center of Fushun
City. She is known to be cruel and brutal. She was in charge of many brutal
force-feeding. Many Falun Gong practitioners were tortured by her cruel
force-feeding. Zhao specially trained a bunch of prisoners to torture Falun Gong
practitioners. They use wood saws or toothbrushes to open practitioner's mouths
while feeding them by force. Many practitioners' teeth were broken. Zhao also
taught the prisoners to hit practitioners' body parts that other people cannot
see or practitioners cannot describe, for example to pinch practitioners'
chests, insides of their arms and legs while supporting or force-feeding them.
She also told them nipping a tiny spot hurts especially. They also put
practitioners in shackles or cuffed their hands behind their backs. Many
practitioners were black and blue after being pinched. D. Summary of Falun Gong practitioners conditions who have been detained at
Fushun City Detention Center At Fushun City Detention Center, more than 30 people are detained in a cell
the size of just a little over 10 square meters (about 330 square feet). Those
imprisoned have to sleep sideways on the floor. They are forced to work from
6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m. At times they are required to work until
midnight or the next morning. Yet, they do not receive the nutrition needed for
such hard labor. They are fed unbaked corn bread, a few moldy pickles, and small
quantities of very thin soup. They are sometimes also given a steamed bun. There are a number of Falun Gong practitioners that were severely persecuted
at this detention center. Fluid accumulated in their chest cavity, and infusions
were no longer possible. Shenyang Prison Hospital refused to take the
practitioners, yet the detention center still did not release them. They gave
them nourishing foods, instead of the necessary medical treatment. When
practitioners refused the nutrients and requested a hospital checkup, police
forced them to write "Falun Gong practitioner refuses to take medicine. I
accept responsibility if my own life is in danger." It is difficult to assess as to how many practitioners were persecuted at
Fushun City Detention Center since the persecution began. The following is only
the tip of the iceberg. 1. Falun Gong practitioners detained beyond their original release date By the end of July 2003, the following 12 Falun Gong practitioners were
detained beyond their original terms in Fushun City Detention Center. Then, they
were sentenced to prison terms without due process. Some practitioners were
brutally persecuted and their life was endangered, yet Fushun City detention
center refused to release them on bail for medical treatment. Some were still
imprisoned in 2005. (1) Ms. Jia Naizhi, 54 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002. She was
detained until early July, 2003, beyond her original term. Then, she was
illegally sentenced to 10 years in prison without a court hearing. (2) Ms. Qu Cailing, 52 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002, and was
detained until early July 2003, beyond her original term. She was illegally
sentenced to 9 years in prison without a court hearing. Because of inhuman
treatment, she contracted many illnesses. Therefore, the prison refused to take
her. Yet, Fushun City No. 2 Detention Center did not release her. (3) Mr. Sun Qian, 32 years old, was arrested on October 10, 2002, and was
detained until early July 2003, beyond his original term. He was illegally
sentenced to a 9-year prison term without a court hearing. (4) Mr. Sun Yongsheng, 31 years old, was illegally sentenced to a 2-year
prison term for appealing for Falun Dafa in Beijing. He was arrested on October
10, 2002 and detained until early July 2002, beyond his original term. He was
sentenced to an 8-year prison term without a court hearing. (5) Mr. Hao Xiangjun, 49 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002 and was
detained until early July 2003, beyond his original term. He was illegally
sentenced to a 6-year prison term without a court hearing. (6) Mr. Song Wenliang, 40 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002 and
detained until early July 2003, beyond his original term. He was sentenced to a
6-year prison term without a court hearing. (7) Ms. Xing Yurong, 37 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002, and was
detained until July, 2003, beyond her original term. She was sentenced to a 6
years prison term without a court hearing. He contracted severe pleural effusion
(accumulation of fluids in the chest cavity) due to the persecution, and his
life was in danger. He was released on bail for medical treatment. (8) Ms. Miao Shuqing, 54 years old, was arrested on October, 10, 2002. She
was detained until July 2003, beyond her original term, after which she was
sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison without due process. (9) Ms. Wu Xiaoyan, 33 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002. She was
detained until July 2003, beyond her original term, and then sentenced to a
4-year prison term without due process. (10) Ms. Gao Guirong, 49 years old, was arrested on October 11, 2002. She was
detained until July 2003, beyond her original term, and then sentenced to a
4-year prison term. (11) Mr. Liang Xuesi, 66 years old, was arrested on October 2002. He was
detained until July 2003, beyond her original term. He was then sentenced to 3
years in prison without given a court hearing. (12) Ms. Dai Yulan, 58 years old, was arrested on October 15, 2005. She was
detained until July 2003, after which she was sentenced to a 1-1/2 year prison
term without due process. 2. Additional list of persecuted Falun Gong practitioners (1) Mr. Liu Zhange was arrested by police from the 610 Office on November 7,
2001 while distributing truth-clarification material. He was taken to Fushun
City No. 2 Detention Center and was released after a month, due to holding
righteous thoughts. On July 6, 2002, he was arrested by police from the No. 1
Division and was detained in Fushun City No. 1 Detention Center. (2) Mr. Tian Jinling, 38 years old, is a resident of Heping St., Wang Hua
District, Fushun City, Liaoning Province. He was an employee at Fushun Steel
Factory. He was illegally arrested in 2002 and detained in the Fushun City
Detention Center. He was sentenced to a 4-year prison term in Feb. 2003. (3) Ms. Wang Xiaoyan, was illegally sentenced to a15-year prison term during
unlawful secret court hearings by the Fushun City Court. Other practitioners
sentenced at the same time included Wang Xiaoyan, Wang Tao, Yan Jun and others.
Although she was in poor health, the police refused to release her on bail for
medical treatment. She was detained in Fushun City No.2 Detention Center. (4) Wang Fengyun, Liu Xiangyun, Ma Fengmei. (5) Li Jing, Zhang Lijuan and a practitioner surnamed Li, were reported to
police while distributing truth clarification materials in the Dawa and Xiaowa
districts of Fushun City. They were arrested and taken to Wanghua District Lishi
police station of Fushun City. They were taken the following day to Fushun City
Detention Center. (6) Police of Hongkuang police station, Fushun City Police Department
arrested Mr. Yu Shiquan, a Falun Gong practitioner from Qingyuan County of
Fushun City, on May 19, 2004. He was illegally detained at the Fushun City
Police Detention Center in Nangou. (7) State Security police of Fushun City arrested Ms. Du Jinling, a Falun
Gong practitioner from Hongtoushan Town, Fushun City, on August 16, 2004. She
was detained at Fushun City Detention Center. (8) Plainclothes police tricked Mr. Yang Boliang, a Falun Gong practitioner
from Hongtoushan Mine, Fushun City, to go to the Hongtoushan Town governmental
office on August 18, 2004. He was arrested and taken to Fushun City Detention
Center. (9) Ms. Jiang Yuxiu (52 years old) and Ms. Qian Hong (over 40 years old), are
residents of Lizigou District, Fushun City. On August 30, 2004, Jiang Yuxiu and
Qian Hong distributed truth clarification CDs in Qianjin Township, Fushun
County. They were reported to police, and subsequently police from the Qianjin
Township police station arrested them. Jiang Yuxiu was detained at Nangou
Detention Center, Fushun City. Qian Hong was taken to Masanjia Forced Labor Camp
in Shenyang. (10) Mr. Yuan Peng was arrested on September 8, 2004 at his home in Sifangtai,
Lishi Township, and sentenced by Fushun Economic Development District Court. He
was detained in Fushun City No. 1 Detention Center. (11) Staff from Shijagou Community and Police Station, Fushun City arrested
Wang Guijie before October 1, 2004. He was illegally detained at Fushun City
Detention Center (located at Nangou District, Fushun City). (12) Staff from the Guchengzi police station and Wanghua District Political
and Judicial Committee arrested Wang Yumei and her younger sister on November 4,
2004. They were detained without due process in Fushun City Detention Center
(located at Nangou District, Fushun City). (13) Wang Guiqin, a practitioner from Shiwen Town, Fushun City, was arrested
on November 11, 2004 for clarifying the truth to people. She was detained at
Fushun City Detention Center. (14) Lin Bo, Wang Guoying, Chengmin and her husband, were arrested during the
night of January 12, 2005, when police raided a Falun Dafa material site at
Yulin District, Fushun City. Mr. Lin Bo, over 40 years old; Ms. Wang Guoying,
close to 40 years old; Ms. Cheng Min, over 20 years old and her non-practitioner

Detention Center and detained without due process. Lin Bo was detained in the
No. 1 Detention Center. Wang Guoying, Cheng Min and her husband were detained in
the No. 2 Detention Center. (15) Gai Xiuqin and Lu Guanglin (husband and wife), Lin Guilan, Lu Yan and
Chen Guifeng were arrested by staff from the No. 1 Division, Fushun police
department on March 15, 2005. On March 22, Lu Guangli was taken to Fushun City
No. 1 Detention Center. The other four practitioners were taken to Fushun City

(news from 2004) Fushun City Detention Center forces prisoners to produce toothpicks. Many toothpicks are in actuality waste products. The detention center forces
Falun Gong practitioners and other inmates to select toothpicks from waste
products, and then pack them in plastic, paper or other kind of bags. Some of
the toothpicks may be wrapped with a luminous paper band, then made into a
bundle of 100 or 120 toothpicks. Each box will contain several hundred bundles.
Also, they may have to use 4 different colorful bands to wrap toothpicks, and
put them into a small box, with each small box containing 400 to 500 toothpicks.
Then they put each small box into a larger box. It is rumored that these
products are exported to South Korea. This work is very time-consuming. The
waste products arrive in large quantities. It is very common that the
"slave laborers" work more than half a month, or more than a month on
such batches. The work must be completed within a set time. If it appears that
the deadline can't be met, staff from the detention center force the inmates to
work around the clock. Often prisoners have to work until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. If
Falun Gong practitioners refuse to work, staff from the detention center
handcuff practitioners' hands behind the back and chain their feet. The toothpicks are packaged often unhygienically. Prisoners are angry because
they are forced to work, although they dare not complain, so they will vent
their anger on the toothpicks. After they get up at 6:00 a.m., some prisoners
will not wash their face and hands. They throw the waste products to the ground,
not caring if the ground is dirty or clean, before they begin to pack the
toothpicks. Especially during hot summers, prisoners get very angry for being
forced to work. Some prisoners step on the toothpicks and push them around in
the dirt before they throw the toothpicks on a big pile. Some would pick a
toothpick and pick their teeth. Besides, it is a crowded environment. There are
20 or 30 people crowded into a small cell of a little over a dozen square
meters. The toilet is in the same room. So many people eat, drink, go to the
toilet and sleep in this small room. People have to sleep side by side, and it
is so crowded that it becomes difficult to breathe. They practice no hygiene. F.
