Song Renzong: An Emperor with Integrity, Frugality, and Tolerance

(Clearwisdom.net) Emperor Song Renzong, who was born Zhao Zhen (1010-1063), was the fourth Emperor of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). He ruled the country for 41 years, the longest reign in the Song Dynasty. He was a very good man, being tolerant and frugal. He was good at taking people's suggestions and being self-disciplined. During his rule, the country was peaceful, prosperous, and full of culture. He was referred to by people as the "Emperor with Integrity," and "King of Wisdom and Holiness."

One day at the beginning of Autumn, some officials gave Song Renzong clams. He asked where they came from, and an official told him that they were from far away. Song Renzong asked how much they cost, and was told that each cost ten thousand coins, with all 28 clams costing 280,000 coins. Renzong said, "I have always told you be frugal, but now you want me eat some expensive clams. I cannot swallow these down." He did not eat any of the clams.

One morning Renzong told his assistant, "I was very hungry last night, and I could not fall asleep. I was longing to eat roast lamb." His assistant said, "Why don't you order the cook to make some?" Song Renzong replied, "Have you heard that every time I ask for something, people imitate my actions outside the palace? I was afraid that if I asked, others would butcher a lamb every night. In the long run, how many lives would be killed unnecessarily? So I chose to tolerate my hunger to avoid endless killings."
