Rubenis started a 3-day hunger strike on April 14 to protest the Chinese
Communist regime's persecution of Falun Gong. Rubenis won Latvia's first Winter
Olympic medal at Torino. Rubenis told Latvian National Radio that he had gotten into touch with some
Falun Gong practitioners for more than a year. He said that he wanted to protest
the persecution [on behalf of the practitioners] with the hunger strike.
