Every week, Dotty and her daughter Joyce Mitchell drive from Baldwin to Lawrence to joint her granddaughter Kerrie for a weekly group exercise. Kerrie is a student of biology at the University of Kansas and Vice President of the Falun Dafa Organization at her university.

Dotty has benefited from Falun Gong ever since she started practicing it. She used to have yellow spots on her eyes. After she started practicing Falun Gong, she found the yellow spots gone at her next physical checkup. Her eye doctor told her to continue practicing Falun Gong. She practices the exercises every day. If by chance she does not get to them, she really misses doing them. Dottie attends weekly group practices in city parks and group study of Zhuan Falun.

Dotty can also be seen doing the exercises on Falun Dafa parade floats, and distributing information about the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. By entering the contest, she hoped to generate awareness of Falun Gong among other senior citizens and their families.
