Dr. Yang Jingduan from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, who is a Falun Gong practitioner, was invited to give a speech at the ceremony. He first praised Dr. King's contribution to America, and then he condemned the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) persecution against Falun Gong practitioners, Christians and democracy movement activists. He also called upon people to help stop the CCP's organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners.

Dr. Yang told reporters after the ceremony that he felt honored to give a speech at the church where Dr. Martin Luther King preached. He said, "I am encouraged to learn that Dr. King had been jailed 29 times. I think that those Falun Gong practitioners, lawyers and others who are being jailed by the CCP should have confidence. They will have freedom and they will be remembered as heroes in history."

In the parade after the ceremony, the Falun Gong group was the only entry whose members were mostly Chinese. Falun Gong practitioners have been invited to the parade for several years. In the parade, they displayed banners reading, "The World Needs Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," "Falun Dafa is Good," and, "Stop Genocide Against Falun Gong in China."
