Authorities from Zhoukou City Attempt to Put Ms. Li Chunmei and Ms. Ren Xueying on Trial

On the afternoon of August 24, 2007, local authorities ransacked the homes of Ms. Li Chunmei and Ms. Ren Xueying, both practitioners, and arrested them both. While in prison, Ms. Li had to be sent to a hospital several times for emergency treatment. On the afternoon of September 12, 2007, she was released to go home, but was still under house arrest. Ms. Ren is still being held in the Xihua Detention Center. On November 20, 2007, the Chuanhui District Procurator in Zhoukou City, Henan Province delivered formal documents to family members of Ms. Ren and Ms. Li, alerting them that both practitioners would be put on trial as early as November 30, 2007.

Ms. Ren, 59, was a retired senior lecturer at Zhoukou City Physical Education Institute. During her tenure there, every year she was selected as the most outstanding teacher. Both her husband and daughter work at Zhoukou Normal University. Mr. Ren twice went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. The second time she was sentenced to forced labor education for one year and nine months.

Ms. Li, 59, was a retired employee of Zhoukou Normal University. She started practicing Falun Gong in 1996. In one month, all her illnesses went away. In October 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong and was arrested. At the end of September 2000, she went to Beijing again. This time she was sentenced to three years in a forced labor camp. After one month in detention, she had a relapse of a cerebral problem and was released.
