Persecution of Practitioners in Gaobeidian City, Hebei Province

1. Ms. Yang Shuhua was arrested by policeman Shi Jiapei at the end of February 2000, detained for one month, and had 5,000 yuan cash extorted from her. In May 2001, Ms. Yang Shuhua was taken to a brainwashing center for 40 days and had 3,000 yuan cash extorted from her. In 2002, she was forced to live on the street for a half year to avoid persecution.

2. Ms. Li Shuhua was taken to a brainwashing center for 20 days at the end of June 2002. The police extorted 1,000 yuan from her. From March to June in 2003, she was forced to leave home to avoid persecution.

3. Ms. Zhang Xiuzhi was taken to a brainwashing center for 45 days in May 2001. The police extorted 1,500 yuan from her. In December 2002, Ms. Zhang Xiuzhi was taken to the detention center of Gaobeidian City and detained there for 35 days. The police extorted 3,000 yuan from her and forced her to pay 200 yuan in meal fees. In February 2003, Ms. Zhang Xiuzhi was detained in the city detention center and forced to pay 350 yuan in meal fees.

Mr. Zhang Deming is from Xiaoying Village, Baigou Town, Gaobeidian City. Since July 20, 1999, policemen would go to his house to harass him every holiday that the police deemed one of the sensitive dates. Sometimes the police even knocked on his door at midnight.

On July 21, 1999, Zhang Deming was intercepted at the exit of Dingxing Highway while he was on his way to Beijing to clarify the truth. He was detained for 43 days.

On the eve of October 1, 2000, Mr. Zhang Deming was detained for several days. He was deprived of his freedom to speak, eat, and go to the bathroom.

On November 28, 2000, Mr Zhang Deming's house was ransacked. Mr. Zhang Deming's son, Zhang Wenqing, and daughter, Zhang Wenjuan (both are practitioners), were arrested. His daughter was arrested again after she was released when Mr. Zhang Deming was sent for brainwashing. The police extorted 3,000 yuan cash from the family.

At around 4 p.m. on November 30, 2000, two policemen beat Mr. Zhang Deming with batons constantly for over 10 minutes in the Bachang Brainwashing Center of Gaobeidian City. He nearly passed out. He could not move at all from the pain. His shoulders, back, and buttocks were covered with purple, blistering bruises filled with blood. In the entire week after the beating, Mr. Zhang was in a coma. He could not remember anything. He became incontinent.

On December 20, seeing that Mr. Zhang remained determined in his belief in Falun Gong, the police in the Bachang Brainwashing Center sent him and another practitioner to a detention center for eight months, where they were subjected to all kinds of torture.

On August 20, 2001, Mr. Zhang was transferred to the Jizhong Prison in Mancheng City. The persecutors adopted a phony kindness to mislead him and lead him astray.

After he was released from prison, he was arrested again on June 7, 2006, for spreading the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party. After Mr. Zhang Deming escaped, he has been living a homeless life ever since to avoid arrest.
