Ms. Zhang Suying is an associate researcher with the Agricultural Institute in Heilongjiang Province in the Mudanjiang City Branch located in Wenchun Town. It used to be the Institute of Agricultural Science. Her retirement pension was canceled just because she is a Falun Gong practitioner.

Ms. Zhang's family is entirely composed of Falun Gong practitioners. In September 2000, Ms. Zhang Suying, her husband Mr. Zeng, and her son Mr. Zeng Chu were all detained in the Mudanjiang City No. 1 Detention Center. Later, Mr. Zeng Chu was sentenced to forced labor camp. After he was released, he was harassed, taken into custody, and fined repeatedly. Her husband Mr. Zheng, a professor at the Wenchun Agricultural School, lived in a state of constant fear. He passed away in sorrow. Ms. Zhang's pension, her only source of income, was canceled by the Institute.
