At about 8:00 p.m. on January 28, 2008, a dozen police officers from Huaidian Township Police Station, Shenqiu County, Henan Province, led by Lu Feng, broke into Falun Gong practitioner Ma Yukun's home, intending to take him away. However, he was not there. When they learned that Ma Yukun had left home, the police ransacked the house, including the bedroom of Mr. Ma's mother. This severely frightened his 90-year-old mother, and she passed away the next day.

Mr. Ma's mother was known as a kindhearted woman and was respected by all in the neighborhood. She was in good health prior to the police harassment.

The funeral ceremony was even under surveillance by plainclothes officers. Mr. Ma Yukun was persecuted just because of his belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance." He was forced to become homeless in order to avoid further persecution. He was not even able to return home to attend his mother's funeral to pay his last respects, let alone join the family reunion for Chinese New Year.
