Ms. Xia Yuanlan Dies after Being Tortured in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region

(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Xia Yuanlan, 68, lived in Urumqi City, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Her husband was an employee of the Nonferrous Metallurgical Industry Research Institute. She lived with her three daughters after her husband passed away. She was constantly ill with a variety of ailments, but after she started practicing Falun Gong, they disappeared. She stopped practicing for a time because of the pressure of the persecution, but had returned to cultivation in recent years.

On February 21, 2007, Ms. Xia was arrested with three other fellow practitioners when distributing copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party in Shuimogou District. The practitioners were detained by the police in Shuimogou District Detention Center. The Urumqi City Middle Court held a trial on December 7, 2007. Their case was submitted to the City Higher Court, but they never received a sentence.

At 8:30 p.m. on March 25, 2008, the Shuimogou District Detention Center personnel notified Ms. Xia's family to pick her up. They told her family that her heart disease had recurred. Her family took her to the provincial army corps hospital, but her health did not improve, and she passed away. Her family was not allowed to visit her from the time she was arrested on February 21, 2007, until the day she died.
