MY YEARS OF HELL IN A CHINESE LABOR CAMP

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND (The Herald)-The most disturbing memory Li Heping has of Zhejiang Shiliping forced labour camp in China is of being injected with psychotropic drugs. "My pulse raced. I felt something alien wriggling in my blood. Every face I saw was twisted like the face of a devil. Outside a cat miaoed. I suddenly thought it was a huge tiger coming to tear me to pieces. My saliva and urine reeked with a disgusting smell of chemicals," he says ... With the nation's president, Hu Jintao, on an official visit to Britain this week, Li wants the world to know about the beatings, the summary executions and the forced labour that underpins the world's fastest growing economy. "Just as arbeit macht frei (work makes you free) was used as the slogan in Nazi Germany, the equivalent in China is laodong gaizao, or labour transforms," Li says ... Since the creation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, it is thought that 47 million people have been sent to China's laogai. Human Rights Watch Asia says that there are about 1,000 forced labour camps and the US State Department estimates six to eight million people are being detained, including the leaders of the 1989 democracy protest in Tiananmen Square. The laogai are designed, according to critics, to brainwash anyone perceived as a threat to the C.C.P's totalitarianism and to create the world's largest and most profitable workforce to drive an economy that has been growing nearly 10% a year for the past three decades and flooding western markets with cheap goods. "We would be made to work all day to produce toys, dolls, handicrafts, coats, sweaters and lighters. The head of the camp was one of China's most famous businessmen and our products were packaged to be sent to Australia", Li says. As a practitioner of Falun Gong, the banned spiritual movement based on Buddhist principles, Li was arrested and sent to Shiliping camp in August, 2001.

PRESIDENT BUSH URGED TO RAISE FALUN GONG WITH CHINESE COMMUNIST LEADER
WASHINGTON DC (AFP)-US President George W. Bush was urged to raise Beijing's crackdown of the Falun Gong spiritual group during his talks this week with Chinese leaders. "President Bush must bring up the Falun Gong in his public meetings with President Hu Jintao and China's leaders, and call for, in unambiguous terms, an end to the suppression," the group's spokesman Erping Zhang said ... The US State Department last week expressed regret over the "suffering" of Falun Gong followers in China while releasing its annual report on international religious freedom ... John Hanford, the US envoy for international religious freedom, said "while the Falun Gong are not officially a religion, more a spiritual movement, the suffering that they have endured is unspeakable. There have been so many who have been arrested-thousands and thousands, many who have died in police custody and the problem just doesn't seem to abate. And so this is something we all are deeply concerned about."

FALUN GONG WINS LEGAL VICTORY IN HONG KONG "BLACKLIST" CASE
HONG KONG (South China Morning Post)-Four Taiwanese Falun Gong practitioners who were refused entry to Hong Kong to attend a religious conference two years ago have won a legal victory in their bid to discover why they were put on the Immigration Department's "watch list". Justice Michael Hartmann of the Court of First Instance yesterday ordered the Director of Immigration to reveal whether the department possessed any material sought by the four practitioners ... that would shed light on why they were placed on the watch list. However, even if the department acknowledges the existence of such documents, it could still avoid disclosing them by applying for public interest immunity. The four were stopped at Chek Lap Kok airport in February 2003 after arriving from Taiwan to attend the Hong Kong Falun Gong Experience Sharing Conference, organised by the Hong Kong Association of Falun Dafa. They were among 83 overseas Falun Gong practitioners refused entry to Hong Kong at that time-including 80 from Taiwan.

LAWSUITS FOR CRIMES OF TORTURE FOLLOW TOURING CHINESE OFFICIAL
LONDON (Epoch Times)-China's Minister of Commerce, Bo Xilai, has been the subject of legal action around the globe as Falun Gong practitioners seek redress for his involvement in overseeing the murder and torture of adherents in Liaoning Province. The application for an arrest warrant was filed at Bow Street Magistrates Court by an elderly Chinese lady, now living in the UK, who was tortured in Liaoning for practising Falun Gong. The plaintiff, who for issues of personal safety will remain anonymous, said that almost every female Falun Gong practitioner suffered severe sexual abuse in the Camp. She recalls once being stripped down and having police insert an electric [shock] baton into her vagina. She said that she was often forced to squat for prolonged periods, and that "if you couldn't squat any longer and fell down, you would be beaten, kicked, and your hair would be pulled to drag you up".

Practitioner Ms. Li Shuming in Lingyuan Left Deaf after Years of Brutal Torture

Ms. Li Shuming is a Falun Dafa practitioner in the District of Lingbei in the City of Lingyuan (Liaoning Province). She has been taken away by the police many times for practicing Falun Dafa and sent to the local labor camp. Due to the severe torture she experienced, she lost her hearing four years ago, which has brought great suffering to her life. Ms. Li is in her 50's.

In December 14, 2000, (Chinese lunar calendar, January 8, 2001, solar calendar), Wang Chunfu, deputy director of Lingbei Police Station, along with a policeman and Zheng Zhiyong, director of Village Security, broke into Li Shuming's home and took away all of her Falun Dafa books and related materials. They also took her tape recorder. The younger son of Li Shuming followed them to the yard and demanded the tape recorder back. Li Shuming said, "Why don't you demand for them to give back the Falun Dafa books?" So her elder son went out to the police van to retrieve the books. Li and her husband also went out. Wang Chunfu drove away in a hurry.

Li Shuming decided to stay away from home for a while to avoid further persecution. Just when she was about to leave, Feng Guimin, the village supervisor, went to her home and prevented her from leaving. Soon, the police station sent a van and seven to eight policemen. They ransacked her home like bandits. They found a letter from Beijing underneath the bed and forced Li to tell them who sent the letter. They couldn't find anything else as evidence, so they took the letter. They also threatened to arrest Li's elder son. In the end, they didn't take him away, but took Li and her younger son to the police station, accusing her son of "attempting to interfere with police at work" for demanding the tape recorder back.

They beat Li's younger son, threatened him, and forced him to stand for long hours facing a wall. They pressed Li to tell where she got the truth-clarifying materials. Si Jicheng, the police station chief, came over with an electric baton. He punched and kicked Li for a while, kicking her legs with his boots, and grabbing her hair to throw her head against the wall. "Bang!" the sound of Li's head hitting the wall surprised everyone on site.

Si Jicheng then shocked Li on her face, nose, lips, and the back of her hands with the electric baton. In the end, they handcuffed Li and her younger son to the rails of a bed and forced them to stay in a sitting position for a whole night.

The next day, Si Jicheng came to press Li for the source of the truth-clarifying materials. He cursed her with dirty words, and threatened her. At the same time, he was preparing documents to send Li to a detention center. At noon, someone spoke up for Li's younger son. He was fined 200 yuan and then released. At dusk, the chief of the police station, along with Liu Shiwen, personally drove the police van to send Li Shuming to the Detention Center of Lingyuan City, where she was detained for 32 days. She was released on the 17th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

Because of Si Jicheng's throwing Li Shuming's head against the wall, Li lost her hearing for ten days. She also felt muddle-headed. She couldn't hear clearly what people said. After ten days, she gradually improved. In fact, she only felt that she was improving; she still couldn't hear normal conversations. Her face turned black due to the electric shocks, as if she were beaten severely. The burning smell it left made it hard for her to breathe. She had no appetite. When breathing, she felt her heart and lungs were tweaked.

On the evening of September 30, 2001, Li Shuming went to appeal in Beijing alone. On October 3, she was taken back by police from the Lingbei Police Station. When they arrived at the police station, it was eight o'clock in the evening. People from the town office were waiting there, giving her another round of punching, kicking and verbal abuse. Liu Guoying, the female deputy Town Manager, was the one who cursed and beat her most ferociously. They forced Li to stand for two days and nights without sleep by handcuffing her to the bed rack.

On the afternoon of October 5, the people appointed by the Town Hall to administer the Falun Dafa practitioners in Miaodongcun Village went to the police station and interrogated Li Shuming, asking her, "Who gave you orders to go to Beijing? Who gave you money for the trip? and "Who were you supposed to contact in Beijing?" Li Shuming clarified the truth to them and told them why she went to appeal in Beijing. While she was talking to them, Liu Guoying kept on cursing and beating her. She asked her questions while beating her in the face, giving her countless punches and kicks.

On the same day, officials from the Town Hall sent two groups of people to the police station to work on Li Shuming. The first group had thirteen people, the second fifteen. In the second group, there was one person called Li Yunshan. While they were talking to Li Shuming, he suddenly slapped Li Shuming in her right ear heavily. Li Shuming was stunned by the heavy stroke. She felt her ear was suddenly stuffed by something and so was her head. She had an unspeakable feeling of misery. After quite some time, she came to her senses. Then Li Yunshan grabbed Li Shuming's hair and pulled her head to the side. Li Shuming's hands were still cuffed to the steel ring on the wall. The handcuffs cut into the flesh of her left hand. Li Yunshan also kicked her in her shins.

At the same time, Liu Guoying pulled the other handcuff while pulling her wrist to the opposite direction. They blamed Li Shuming for going to Beijing to appeal on October 1, saying that National Celebration Day (October 1), New Year's Day, and Lunar Chinese New Year's Day were all sensitive times to the authorities. Her trip to Beijing brought trouble to a lot of officials in the Police Bureau of Liaoning Province, the Police Department of Chaoyang City, and the Police Department of Lingyuan. As a result, many officials were removed from their posts, or lost their jobs. In fact, they were using this as an excuse. (People who go to appeal in Beijing at other times have also been tortured, extorted money, detained, or even sent to labor camps.) On the evening of October 5, Li Xinhua and Li Xinhai sent Li Shuming to the detention center. In the detention center, Li Shuming held a hunger strike for 18 days to protest the persecution.

During that period, she found it hard to hear people talking. People would yell at her, "Why? You are so deaf!" Li Shuming felt surprised to see people moving their mouths without producing any sound. One day, the doctor at the detention center, Zhou Ping, went to the Ms. Li's cell with deputy director Li Jun and guard Li Junjie, to talk to Li Shuming. She saw that Zhou Ping's mouth was moving with a weak sound. She couldn't hear what he was saying and wondered what he was doing there. The practitioner by her side was anxious for her. She touched Li Shuming and said loudly, "The doctor is talking to you. He asked if you have a headache. Why don't you answer him?" Only then did Li Shuming realize that she couldn't hear. She told Doctor Zhou that she had a headache.

She felt her ears were stuffed and she was very uncomfortable. There was a black swollen bruise under her left knee joint, which was too painful to touch. Her left wrist had cuts. Her left thumb and palm felt numb. She found that she could only see people's mouths moving, but couldn't hear their voices. Others were impatient talking to her. In the end, Li Shuming stopped talking to people. In the detention center, Li Shuming was forced to attend two brainwashing class sessions, yet no one could make her give up Falun Dafa. On January 19, 2002, the detention center held the third session of the brainwashing class. Li's husband was forced to attend too.

Li Shuming was illegally detained at the Detention Center of Lingyuan City (also called the No. 2 Custody Center) for three months and 17 days. She was sent to Masanjia Labor Camp on January 22, 2002.

Li Shuming was detained in Masanjia Labor Camp for 14 days. She only knew that her cell was on the third floor and she was on the Second Team, but she didn't know which sub-team she was in, neither did she know the name of the person in charge of the team, but that person had three talks with her on the 23rd, 25th, and the 27th of January respectively. He wrote down words on a piece of paper to communicate, while Li spoke to him directly. Usually, he wrote a lot of things, such as Falun Gong was determined to be a cult and people were forbidden to practice it. It was violating the law to keep on practicing, and so on. Li, however, just replied with one or two simple sentences: "I think Falun Dafa is a righteous way. It teaches people to value virtue and morality, to improve one's heart, and be good. There is absolutely nothing wrong in it." Then the man would write a lot of other stuff. Li would respond with one simple sentence: "Why are other countries not against it, only the Chinese government?" On January 30, the man took Li Shuming to have a physical exam in Shenyang Hospital and decided to send her back home on that afternoon. They didn't let her family know the result of the exam. On February 5, Li's family brought her home.

It's been four years since Li Shuming lost her hearing due to the physical abuse of the police tormentors. She has still not recovered at this time.

Our Child Needs a Father's Love, We Need a Complete Family - a letter to the Police Chief of Guangzhou City

I am Xie Wenrui. The officers from the Chigang Police Station in the Haizhu District, Guangzhou City illegally arrested my husband and mother-in-law last year. Below is my eyewitness account:

On November 22, 2004 at around 10:30 p.m., officer Ruan Peihong from the Chigang Police Station and Wei Hongqing, a residential committee worker, used the excuse of checking for fire safety and entered our Feihu Curtain Shop, located at Yiyuanxi Street. The police officer used the excuse of having to use the restroom to enter the premises. He then climbed up the wooden stairs and barged into the attic. He saw my mother-in-law Liu Huaiying reading Falun Gong books and snatched the books from her. My mother-in-law resisted and tried to get her books back. In the process she fell down from the attic, struggled to get up and ran to the middle of the road. The policeman chased after her and grabbed ahold of her. At the same time, they also arrested my husband Zhu Rencheng who intervened to stop the police from taking the books away. Mother and son were forcibly shoved into the police car and driven away.

After that, Chigang Police Station officials sent a lot of police and security guards to guard the front of the shop. At around 10 p.m., they brought a locksmith to pry the shop door open. They did not show any search warrant, yet they went ahead and ransacked the shop. They left around 12 midnight. The next morning, they came again to ransack the shop once more. The shop was in a mess. They also took away personal items such as our desktop computer and printer. They did not show us any search warrant, receipts or provide records for documentation. Thereafter, they sent people to monitor the shop for around a week.

I heard no news of my husband and mother-in-law. I was left all alone with a two-month-old baby in the freezing winter. My shop was also forced to close and I had difficulty making ends meet.

It was only later, when I received a letter from my husband, that I found out that both he and his mother were being unlawfully held at the Haizhu Detention Center. They were incarcerated there until January 22, 2005, when they were sent to the Guangzhou Province Chatou Women's Forced Labor Camp and Chini Forced Labor Camp in Huadou. The duration of their lock-up at the detention center exceeded the number of days allowed under China's Criminal Law.

I carried my baby on my back and went around many law firms to inquire about possible recourse. The reply I got was that the behavior of the police was that of "knowing the law yet knowingly breaking the law."

Item 37 in the People's Republic of China's Constitution states, "The personal freedom of citizens of the People's Republic of China will not be violated. Any citizen, without the permission or judgment of the People's Procuratorate or the decision of the People's Court and administered by the Police Institution, will not be arrested. Illegal deprivation and restriction of a citizen's personal freedom are forbidden."

Item 39 says, "The residence of a citizen of the People's Republic of China will not be infringed on. Illegal ransacking and illegal entry into a citizen's residence are forbidden."

But personnel from the Chigang Police Station blatantly broke the country's constitutional laws and infringed on the rights of the citizens.

The books that my mother-in-law was reading teach people to be kind and to follow the principles of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," to be good people. I witnessed first-hand the positive changes in my mother-in-law after she started practicing Falun Dafa. She became healthy and all her illnesses went away. Her temper became better and our family was more harmonious. Why did you arrest such a good person and lock her up in prison?

After my mother-in-law was sent to Chatou Forced Labor Camp, the police did not allow any family members to visit. It was said that a Falun Gong practitioner who refused to "reform" would not be allowed to see his or her family members. My mother-in-law experienced benefits and improvement in her body and mind after practicing Falun Gong. She also became kinder to others. What else do you expect her to "reform" into? She did not want to speak untruths and sign any "letter agreeing to reform and not practice Falun Gong anymore" against her conscience. She is an old lady, yet she was subjected to such inhuman treatment.

My mother-in-law originally came to help me take care of my baby. Yet in less than one month she was arrested. My husband's health has not been very good in the forced labor camp. The baby is now almost one year old, yet still does not know and recognize its father because the father is locked up. Our family's finances are in bad shape. When the baby is sick, there is no one to help me. In the middle of the night I had to go alone with the baby to the hospital. Because I have had to take care of the baby full time I could not continue with the business. I have lost my source of income. My husband and my mother-in-law are now in the forced labor camp. One of them was sentenced to one year of forced labor while the other was sentenced to two and a half years. May I ask: based on which law was the sentence passed? I appeal to the police chief to process this case according to the law.

My baby needs paternal love and we need a complete family.

    Citizen: Xie Wenrui

Three Cases of Missing Persons in Mainland China: Chen Guizhen, Jin Yan, and Yao Guofen

Falun Dafa Practitioner Chen Guizhen from Anyue County, Sichuan Province Disappeared Three Years Ago

Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Chen Guizhen, age 65 with grey hair and 150 cm tall, lived in Village 5, Tongxian Township, Anyue County, Sichuan Province. In 2002, she said that the local police station might come to search her home. She wanted to go to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Dafa. Since then, nobody has known of her whereabouts. Chen Guizhen's husband and children have looked for her since that time. Her husband has vented his frustrations on local Falun Dafa practitioners and asked them for his wife. In reality, it was the Communist Party, Jiang's regime and its accomplices that caused Chen Guizhen's disappearance. They cruelly persecute Falun Dafa practitioners and torn apart countless families.

Please Find out More Information on Falun Dafa Practitioner Jin Yan from Jilin City

Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Jin Yan, age 48, was from Jilin City, Jilin Province. She began to practice Falun Gong in 1995. Nobody has known of her whereabouts since she went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Dafa on April 1, 2002. We are asking practitioners in China to find out more about her whereabouts.

Yao Guofen from Wuhan City, Hubei Province Has Disappeared Since She was Sent to a Mental Hospital to Be Persecuted

Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Yao Guofen from Wuhan City, Hubei Province, age 67, disappeared in March 2000. She was sent to and persecuted in a mental hospital after the persecution started in 1999.

Supplementary Report on Practitioner Mr. Cai Guojun, Who Was Persecuted to Disability in Yingchuan City

On the morning of May 27, 2005, police officers from the 610 Office of the Ningxia Autonomous Region, Yingchuan City National Security, and National Security Bureau of the Shizuishan District ransacked the rental apartment of three practitioners. The policemen confiscated their Falun Gong books, exercise music tapes, a tape player, and a palm PC. Practitioners Hu Jiancai, Qiao Jianhui, and Mr. Cai Guojun, were arrested and detained in a detention center in Shizuishan City. Later, Hu Jiancai and Mr. Qiao were transferred to a second detention center in Shizuishan City.

On June 8, police officers from the National Security Bureau of the Xingqing District Police Station in Yingchuan City took Mr. Cai Guojun back to Yingchuan City. Around 4 p.m., on the fourth floor of the Xingqing District Police Station, Director of the National Security Group Meng Changyi, police officers Zhang Dingsheng and Lu Jianrong, and police officer Wang Man from the National Security Bureau of the Yingchuan Police Station started to interrogate Mr. Cai. Meng Changyi slapped Mr. Cai's face. He and Wang Man cuffed Mr. Cai's hands behind his back to interrogate and torture him.

When Meng Changyi told Mr. Cai to kneel down, Mr. Cai refused. Meng then kicked Cai's calf and forced him to kneel down. After that, Meng stepped on his neck and shoulder and forced Mr. Cai's face to the ground. The pain was hard to bear.

Five or six police officers were standing around, gloating. When Mr. Cai challenged them, saying, "This is illegal and against human rights," police officer Zhang answered, "There are no human rights in China. You think you are in America?" Mr. Cai defied them again, "Your interrogation and tortures are illegal." Police officer Wang answered, "If we don't interrogate and torture you, will you say anything?"

Later they got a chair and bound Mr. Cai's hands and legs to the chair with steel rings. A board was put in front of his chest and tied up with the back of a chair by two belts. Thus, Cai could not move at all. He was tied up this way for more than 10 hours, until noon the next day. Mr. Cai waited for Meng and the others to go out for lunch to escape. He was sending forth the righteous thoughts when his bonds miraculously loosened. As he climbed down the drainpipe on the outer wall of the building, the pipeline pulled loose, and Mr. Cai fell from the forth floor. He fractured his pelvis, two vertebrae, and his right arm.

After four months of medical treatment, his right leg is still disabled. Currently, Mr. Cai has been released. Facing a petition from Mr. Cai and his family, the police are refusing to admit that they tortured him during their interrogation. They also rejected the requests from Mr. Cai and his family to investigate the people responsible and their requests for compensation.
