  • Parents of Ms. Gao Rongrong Speak Out to Demand Justice for their Daughter Who Was Disfigured and Tortured to Death

Our daughter Gao Rongrong, 37, was an accountant at the Luxun Fine Arts College in Shenyang City. She was known widely as a good person.

On June 20, 2003, the wife of graduate student Xu Zhiyang of the Luxun Fine Arts College reported to the college that Gao Rongrong had talked about Falun Gong with Xu Zhiyang. After Gao Rongrong was questioned, the college authorities decided to take part in persecuting her. They and staff from the Shenyang City 610 Office, Shenyang police Hepin Branch, and Hepin District Xinxing police station detained Gao Rongrong at the Shenyang City Detention Center.

In the detention center, Gao Rongrong was subjected to shocks from multiple electric batons, and her entire body was black and blue from the beating. Because of the torture, Gao Rongrong became feverous and very weak. On July 8, Gao Rongrong was sent to Longshan Forced Labor Camp in Shenyang City for a three-year term.

As soon as Gao Rongrong arrived at the labor camp, the guards forced her to squat down for four days and nights and forbid her to sleep. Her stomach and breasts became distended, and it was difficult for her to walk. Just before the 2004 Chinese New Year, Gao Rongrong's liver disease recurred, and she came down with a fever. She and her family requested that the labor camp allow her a physical examination, but the medical section of the labor camp only gave her a prescription for vitamin B6.

Despite her serious health condition, Gao Rongrong continued to suffer violence and torture. On March 22, 2004, because of her health condition, Gao Rongrong did not attend a group meeting of the 2nd Group. The deputy group leader Tang Baoyu dragged her from her bed and on the top layer of a futon. Tang took her to the management section office and cuffed her to the heater. Then, Tang beat, kicked, and shocked her face, neck and sensitive parts of her body with electric batons. Tang shocked her for half an hour, pressed a lighted cigar on the skin of her hands, and punched her back with his elbow. She had to suffer more cruel torture during that time. After that, Gao Rongrong was unable to sit straight. The X-ray showed that her spine was displaced. Many guards and Wang Xuetao, the head of Management Section of the labor camp witnessed Tang shocking her, but nobody stopped the torture. Deputy head of the labor camp Li Fengshi viciously said, "What are the dictatorship organizations for? What are the handcuffs and electric batons for? I don't believe that we cannot make Gao Rongrong yield to our demands."

During the subsequent month, the guards began to torture Goa Rongrong physically and mentally. Around 10 a.m. on May 7, 2004, Gao Rongrong was too weak to do hard labor. Guards Jiang Zhaohua and Wang Jichang tried to force her. When finding out that Gao Rongrong was really weak, they took her to the group leader office on the second floor, and cuffed her to the heater. Jiang Zhaohua kicked her, slapped her face, and used electric batons to shock her for more than one hour. In the afternoon, Gao Rongrong was taken back to the office again. Guards Tang Baoyu and Jiang Zhaohua cuffed Gao Rongrong on the lower rail of the heater so that Gao Rongrong had to squat down and was unable to stand. Tang and Jiang used four electric batons to shock her. Tang cursed, "I will torture you to death today." The guard of the 2nd Group Teng Jilian took our photo (the photo of Gao Rongrong's parents) to the office. Tang Baoyu put the photo on the desk and viciously said, "Now let your parents watch how you are being shocked."

The guards shocked Gao Rongrong for six to seven hours. The skin of her face, ears, neck, back and ankle were severely burned and charred. There were big blisters. Her face was swollen by more than two inches, and she could barely open her eyes. They became two narrow seams and a yellowish liquid seeped from her facial skin. The head of the labor camp, Fang Jinkai, healthcare section head Zhang Xiaoqiu and guards of management section all witnessed Tang Baoyu's cruel torture, but no one stopped him. A guard of the 2nd Group Zeng Xiaopin even held a small mirror in front of Gao Rongrong to mock her. The perpetrators acted like beasts, without any sign of conscience.

Around 10 p.m., a prisoner had a sudden heart attack. Tang Baoyu had to put down the electric batons and left to check on the prisoner. Guard Tang Jiliang did not allow Gao Rongrong to go back to her cell and told her to wait for Tang Baoyu. Not wanting to be tortured to death, Gao Rongrong jumped out of the office window. She fractured her left thighbone, broke her pelvis bones and the heel of her right foot.

Longshan Forced Labor Camp sent her to the Shenyang military general hospital. At that time, her blood pressure had dropped to 40. The doctor was shocked when he saw her burned face. Gao Rongrong asked for her family. Group leader Wang Jinhui said, "We will inform whoever is necessary to know about this situation." Later, the perpetrators transferred her to the Public Security Hospital and spread rumors to the outside that Gao Rongrong's wounds were caused when she fell down the stairs.

We always worried about Rongrong's health. We heard at that time that a Falun Gong practitioner was tortured to death at Longshan Forced Labor Camp and we were deeply concerned. On May 14, Rongrong's two sisters went to the labor camp to find out about Rongrong. Group leader Wang Jinhui and deputy group leader Tang Baoyu tried to hide from the questions and said after a while, "She was wounded, she attempted to escape by jumping out of the building." The sisters asked, "You beat her, didn't you? She was too weak to walk, how could she even escape?" After the sisters' continuous urging and questioning, Tang Baoyu said, "It was in March, This time we did not beat her." Because of the family members' insistence , they allowed the two sisters to visit Gao Rongrong in the Public Security Hospital.

When the sisters first saw Rongrong on the bed in the hospital, they could not recognize her because her face was severely deformed. On May 18, Gao Rongrong was transferred to the First Affiliate Hospital of Shenyang Medical University because of family members requests. Longshan Forced Labor Camp dispatched many guards to watch Gao Rongrong. During Rongrong's hospitalization, Gao Rongrong and her family members received constant threats and were cursed by the guards from Longshan Forced Labor Camp, as well as staff from the Shenyang City Justice Bureau, Politic and Law Committee of Shenyang City, and the 610 office. A Politics and Law Committee employee even attempted to tear the scabs off Rongrong's face. They said, "Longshan Forced Labor Camp provided a detailed report to the Justice Bureau, indicating Gao Rongrong was injured while attempting to escape." We asked Wang Xuetao, the head of the management section of Longshan Forced Labor Camp, as to who wrote the report. He said, "The Longshan authorities made the decision."

We had no other way but to plead our case under existing law. We filed a case with the Liaoning Province Procuratorate and asked the Procuratorate to send a medical examiner to examine Rongrong's wounds and injuries. In July, the provincial procuratorate sent a medical examiner to room 0533 of the hospital to examine Rongrong's wounds from electric shocks. The examiner checked the wounds, took photos and notes, also a sample of the scab from Rongrong's face for further tests. Even the examiner was shocked after seeing Rongrong's injuries: how could such torture still exist in our nation?

At that time, all procuratorates launched a national special campaign of "Investigation of state personnel using their authority to perpetrate human rights crimes." Our case was published in the newspaper. We believed that the perpetrators would be pursued under the law and receive punishment. Staff from the Shenyang City Politics and Law Committee and 610 Office also investigated the situation, but they did not provide any information to Gao Rongrong and family members. They also did not take the responsible staff and related units to task.

When we went to the provincial procuratorate to pick up the examination report. The supervisor of the examination service, Qing Chunzhi said, "The report was taken by the special team organized by the Shenyang City Politic and Law Committee and the 610 Office. I don't have a copy for you, don't come again for it." We said, "What caused the wounds on Gao Rongrong? Since the medical examiner conducted the examination, there should be a conclusion." Qing said, "We cannot tell you."

We lost our hope that the procuratorate would bring justice. We went to the Shenyang City Politics and Law Committee but could not find anyone willing to meet with us. They told us on the phone to visit the city 610 Office. But director Song of the 610 Office said, "You have to go to the provincial procuratorate." We got the run-around, as Qing of the procuratorate told us to visit the provincial 610 Office. No one gave us the location of the provincial 610 Office.

On October 5, 2004, despite being closely watched at the Longshan Forced Labor Camp, Gao Rongrong escaped from the affiliated hospital of the medical university with the help of kind people. Before Gao Rongrong's disappearance, the Shenyang City Justice Bureau and Longshan Forced Labor Camp insisted on sending Gao Rongrong to Shenyang City Dabei Supervised Hospital for treatment and then returning her to Longshan Forced Labor Camp. In truth, Gao Rongrong was persecuted to near death several times at the affiliated hospital of the medical university. Following higher authorities instruction, Wang Xuetao and Bi Yinhong from the management section of Longshan Forced Labor Camp carried a camcorder to the hospital to record Gao Rongrong. When we asked them about Rongrong's whereabouts, they did not answer directly and only told us that Rongrong was taken away from the hospital.

Kindhearted people rescued Gao Rongrong. The government and legal organizations showed no interest in persecuting those responsible for torturing Gao Rongrong. After Rongrong escaped, all police and law units were on high alert to bring her back.

Unfortunately, Gao Rongrong was arrested again in early March 2005. Hearing the news, we went to look for Rongrong. Staff from the Xinxing police station told us to go to Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in Liaoning Province. In Masanjia Forced Labor Camp, camp head Sui Jing met with us and admitted that Gao Rongrong was in the labor camp. But she refused to tell us more details about where she was held and did not allow us to see her. She told us to wait for notification. She would let us know when we could visit Rongrong. But it took three months before we could finally see our daughter.

From March 6 to June 6, a total of three months, when Gao Rongrong was imprisoned at Masanjia Forced Labor Camp, she was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. We, an elderly couple of 76 and 73, went to Masanjia Forced Labor Camp every week with the hope to see our daughter. What worried us most was Rongrong's health. Once we went to the provincial appeals office for help to visit our daughter. The staff told us, "When Gao Rongrong was sent to Masanjia, a mutual agreement was signed between her and the labor camp. And they did gave her a physical examination."

We visited the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp many times, and met with Su Jing, the head of the labor camp. But, Su refused to tell us the exact detention location of our daughter and also did not allow us to visit Rongrong. The deputy head Zhao Laixi also met with us several times. At the beginning, we were asked to wait. Later, we were told that they could not make a decision about the visitation, and they had to follow higher authorities orders. We asked them who the "higher authority" was. They did not tell us. Every time we asked about Rongrong's health, they always said, "Excellent. She's eating well." When we asked to bail Rongrong out for medical treatment, they said, "The government has sole authority over Gao Rongrong's case. As her health is in such a bad shape, it would create a negative effect in society if we allowed you to take her home." They even said, "Gao Rongrong has special protection. We have assigned doctors, and special nurses to take care of her. If we made any mistake in taking care of her, Falun Gong would deal with us in the future." We were deceived by their words and believed that our daughter was given the necessary medical intervention.

The last day we visited Masanjia was June 10. We met with deputy head Zhao Laixi and the other leader of the labor camp with the surname Wang. We still asked to visit our daughter. Wang said, "I will immediately inform you once we get word allowing you to visit her." In fact, right at this moment Gao Rongrong was lying on the bed in an emergency room on the 3rd floor of Emergency Building of the hospital.

One week after Gao Rongrong was admitted to the hospital, around 9:30 a.m. on June 12, Su Jing told us on the phone that Gao Rongrong was in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenyang City Medical University for emergency treatment. We immediately left for the hospital. Gao Rongrong was unconscious, and hooked up to a breathing machine. There was no reaction in her eyes and she looked like a dead person. We read on a small blackboard in the emergency room, "Gao Rongrong, admitted on June 6. A doctor said, "She was dying when she arrived here."

Why did they inform us one week after Gao Rongrong was admitted to the hospital and in a deep coma? If they had informed us on the day (June 6) when Gao Rongrong just was admitted to the hospital, Gao Rongrong could have been saved with her family's support. Why and how could this turn out like this? From Shi Fengyou and the head of Shenyang Zhangshi Forced Labor Camp to Su Jing, Zhao Laixi, head Wang of Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in Liaoning Province, from levels of the Justice department, public security, government of Shenyang City to those of Liaoning Province, people kept lying to us, "Gao Rongrong is in good health, and eats well. You can wait at home. As soon as we receive the authority for you to be with your daughter, we will send her home." Why were they playing these games? Who is responsible for the manipulation of the facts? Who gave the perpetrators permission to murder Gao Rongrong? Our daughter Gao Rongrong suffered such cruel and inhuman persecution because she believed in "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance." The staff members from all the aforementioned organizations are responsible for her death.

When we finally could see our child, she was close to death. At 4 a.m. on June 16, our young, beautiful and lovely child, Gao Rongrong, left us without saying a word to us! We are heartbroken.

Our minds are filled with many thoughts about this tragedy. We request the following and appeal for our rights:

    1. We request all responsible government units and law organs to investigate the officials and their staff responsible for the death of Gao Rongrong.

    2. We request all work units involved in this matter to provide a detailed explanation about Gao Rongrong's whereabouts during the three months before her death, the tortures she suffered, health situation, why no family visits were allowed and why she suddenly died. Who was pulling the strings behind the scenes, and who triggered the murder of Gao Rongrong? Who manipulated all aspects of this case? What is our government going to do about this incident?

    3. Gao Rongrong was wrongly sent to a forced labor camp by the Shenyang City Luxun Fine Art College, tortured in Shenyang Longshan Forced Labor Camp, and secretly detained in Masanjia Forced Labor Camp and eventually died from the persecution. We, her family, demand that Luxun Fine Art College, Shenyang City Justice Bureau, and the Liaoning Province Masanjia Forced Labor Camp compensate us for the financial losses we have suffered and the mental harm done to us.

How I Was Persecuted at Masanjia Forced Labor Camp - Even Today I Still Have Difficulty Walking

I was brutally tortured at the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. After three years of torture, I developed many diseases including heart disease, hypertension, vasculitis, cystitis and diabetes. Even now, I still have difficulty walking.

In October 2002, Masanjia Forced Labor Camp held many "classes" to brainwash Falun Gong practitioners, including forcing practitioners to watch videos that defame Falun Gong. Every time Falun Gong practitioners were forced to watch these videos, practitioners would shout out, "Falun Dafa is good. Restore the good name of My Teacher." The evildoers would then start punching and kicking them. Some Falun Gong practitioner's faces were bashed so hard that they bled. But the evildoers continued and escalated their persecution.

In early November 2002, the division leader tried to force me to wear a label indicating that I am being "re-educated" through forced labor. I sternly refused and said, "I am a good person. I didn't commit any crimes. I refuse to wear such a label." Upon saying this, I was tied up with ropes by the guards for three days. The police hung me by handcuffs for more than two hours each night. Some Falun Gong practitioners were tied up like this for more than twenty days.

In mid-December 2002, the division leader dragged me to a research room and forced me to kneel on a ceramic tile (the tile has a width of half a meter - about 20 in.). I was not allowed to sleep. If my posture slightly changed, or my feet crossed over the tile edge, I was kicked and punched. After kneeling for 31 hours, my feet lost all feeling. My feet were swollen so much that I could not wear any shoes. My feet hurt so much I felt that they were constantly stabbed by needles. Even today, I still have difficulty walking. A doctor at the prison diagnosed this symptom as vasculitis. There were other practitioners who were forced to kneel down for several days or even up to one week, which resulted in various disabilities to their lower bodies.

In early December 2003, the Liaoning Provincial government sent several so-called "cult assistance groups" to the second division of Masanjia Forced Labor Camp to brainwash firm believers of Falun Gong. They brutally persecuted the Falun Gong practitioners locked up on the third floor of the second division. Every "classroom" became an evil den in which Falun Gong practitioners were persecuted. The building was constantly filled with Falun Gong practitioners' screams, the sound of electric shocks and policemen's yells. Every Falun Gong practitioner was persecuted to different extents both mentally and physically. Some were punched so badly that their faces were swollen. Some were electrically shocked and their faces were bruised. Some could no longer walk. Some were forced to kneel down and stand as punishments, while others were often punched and kicked. Some police even used bedsheets to strangle Falun Gong practitioners, resulting in them falling into comas repeatedly. The means of torture were very brutal.

I was scheduled to be released on April 1, 2005. Nonetheless, on that day I not released. Instead I was detained and persecuted for an additional 190 days. I was held in a completely closed-up and isolated division. Falun Gong practitioners went on a group hunger strike to protest. On April 6, corrupt officials carried out force-feeding. Nine guards held me to the floor and used a pincer to open my mouth. They pulled my hair and fiercely pressed my abdomen in order to force-feed me. I felt suffocated, horrified and that my head was exploding. I went unconcious and my mouth was bleeding. I bled and was handcuffed to a bed for several days.

On the morning of April 5, 2005, an evildoer dragged me out of the cell. He pulled my hair and dragged me across the floor for ten meters until we reached the division leader's room. He handcuffed me to a hot air pipe. He deliberately pulled off my pants while dragging me.

The tortures by the corrupt officials at the forced labor camp caused me to develop symptoms of heart disease, hypertension, vasculitis, cystitis and diabetes. Even today, I still have difficult walking.

Practitioner Couple Mr. Sun Hong and Ms. Min Huirong of Qingdao City Detained Again

On September 21, 2005, policemen rushed into Mr. Min Huirong and Ms. Sun Hong's home located in Xiaoweng Village of Licang District, and made off with everything in their home. They had just put together everything in their home in the previous 10 months.

    1. Practicing Falun Gong happily together

From 1993 through 1998, Mr. Sun Hong and Ms. Min Huirong studied as undergraduate classmates in the Department of Acupuncture at Shandong Chinese Traditional Medicine University. In January and June of 1994, the founder of Falun Gong, Mr. Li Hongzhi, came to Jinan to teach Falun Gong in person, and they were lucky to attend both of the classes. Later, they served as volunteers helping newcomer students to read Falun Gong boooks and practice the Falun Gong exercises. Ms. Min was warmhearted, pure, demure and intelligent, receiving a scholarship every year. Mr. Sun was honest, compassionate and steady. Both of them received praise from their teachers, fellow students, friends and relatives. In 1998, they both got their bachelor degrees and came to Qingdao to work.

    2. Stepping forward bravely and going to Beijing to appeal

In July of 1999, Mr. Sun and Ms. Min went to Beijing to appeal to the government and to explain that the persecution of Falun Gong was not right. Armed policemen beat them brutally. Afterwards, their faces were covered with blood. In the hottest summer in July, they, together with about ten thousand fellow practitioners who went to Beijing from all over the country to appeal, were detained in a stadium in Beijing. They did not receive a single drop of water for three days. Detained there also was a Qingdao Marine University graduate student, Zou Songtao, who was later tortured to death in the Wangcun Labor Camp in Zibo City.

    3. Despite the wind and rain, two hearts remained firm and determined.

The 610 Office of Qingdao City was angry because many Qingdao practitioners went to Beijing to appeal. They decided to escalate the persecution. In November 1999, Mr. Sun was sentenced to a labor camp for three years, and was detained in Qingdao Labor Camp. In July 2000, Ms. Min was illegally sentenced to a labor camp, and was detained in the notorious Jiangshuiquan Women's Labor Camp in Jinan City, Shandong Province. At the same time, Ms. Min's mother Ms. Cui Weirui was also sentenced to three years in jail. Only Ms. Min's father and her grandmother who was bedridden with paralysis were left at home.

After being released from the Labor Camp, Mr. Sun was rehired by his original work unit, the Central Hospital of Qingdao (former Qingdao Textile Hospital). Soon after that, he became a key member in the professional work of the Chinese Traditional Medicine Section because of his warmth and patience with the patients, and the exquisite medical techniques he used. The Qingdao 610 Office threatened Ms. Min's original work unit, the Qingdao City's School for the Blind. Therefore, at the end of 2004, they fired her because they were afraid of the 610 Office. Ms. Min Huirong had to leave the blind children she had always cared for.

In the end of November 2004, the couple had a child.

    4. Persecuted again, we appeal for your help to rescue them.

November 1, 2005, was a so-called "sensitive day." The Qingdao 610 Office, in collusion with the National Security Department, arrested, in two separate actions, about thirty Falun Gong practitioners. Mr. Sun and Ms. Min's family suffered persecution again. Ms. Cui was arrested on the morning of September 20. Policemen broke into Mr. Sun and Ms. Min's home on the night of September 21, and searched the entire house. They failed to find any materials relating to Falun Gong. After detaining Mr. Sun and Ms. Min in a detention house, they searched the house three more times. It has been confirmed that they confiscated fifteen thousand Yuan in cash, a private bankbook (together with Sun Hong's salary card), a bankbook for the house loan, their private car, and their keys. On October 29, a family member got their keys, but could not immediately retrieve their property. When the house was opened, it looked like a gang of bandits had been through it. Everything was a mess. Even the light bulbs were gone. Ms. Min's father, in his sixties, almost collapsed.

Mr. Sun and Ms. Min, together with other Falun Gong practitioners who were arrested at the same time, were detained in the Qingdao Dashan Detention Center. The police brutally tortured all of them. The police wanted to get some evidence from Ms. Min, so they intensified their persecution of her. They deprived her of sleep for 8 days and nights. She became emaciated. During his detention, Mr. Sun started a hunger strike to protest. As a result, the police brutally force-fed him many times.

Later, Mr. Sun and Ms. Min, together with several other practitioners, were transferred, under the name of "obtaining a guarantor and awaiting trial out of custody," to the Qingdao Brainwashing Center located on #34 Mingxia Street.

During Mr. Sun's detention, the police went to his work unit to conduct a search, but still found nothing. Under the pressure of the 610 Office, Qingdao Central Hospital stopped Mr. Sun's salary and every fringe benefit. After Mr. Sun was allowed to obtain a guarantor and await trial out of custody, the hospital gave him several hundred yuan per month as his living expense.

A happy family has been destroyed in such a brutal way. Let us all help free Mr. Sun Hong, Ms. Min Huirong and many other Falun Gong practitioners in detention.

On August 24, 2000, she was sentenced to a labor camp for two years by the Jinchang City Management Committee on forced labor.

    Fu Guiqin

On June 9, 2004, Fu Guiqin distributed truth clarification materials around the Fifth Middle School, which is affiliated with Jinchuan Company. As a result, she was reported to the Longshou Public Security Division. The unlawful thugs confiscated eight copies of truth clarification materials and 41 copies of a Falun Gong flyer. That afternoon, officials from the Longshou Public Security division broke into Fu Guiqin's house and confiscated 106 books, including Zhuan Falun, "True Words in Jinchang," and "World Famous Prophesies." Jinchuan District Court Judges: Xie Yuping
Jinchuan District Court Jurors: Li Yufang and Yang Liqiang

    2. Wang Ailing illegally detained at Lanzhou Women's Prison

    Wang Ailing

Ms. Wang Ailing is thirty-two years old. She is from Longjing Village, Ningyuanbao Town, Jinchuan Area, Jinchang City in Gansu Province. She started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. After the persecution started on July 20, 1999, in January 2000 Wang Ailing went to appeal in Beijing. At Tiananmen Square she unfurled a Falun Gong banner and she was then arrested by the police. Later she righteously walked out of the detention center. In February of 2000, she was arrested by police from the security office located at Jinchang City, Beijing Road. Later was she handcuffed by Liu Xingguo from the Ningyuanbao Security Office, and detained overnight. Later she was detained for 15 days at Jinchang City Rehabilitation Center. At that time the Jinchuan Area Party Committee used a system to assign tasks to officials. They ordered that, "one official must transform one Falun Gong practitioner." The secretary of the political and law committee, Cai Xuexiao, told Wang Ailing, "We will give you a job if you stop practicing Falun Gong." She denied the request.

During August of 2000, Wang Ailing and her sister Wang Shuhua (also a practitioner) worked in the city and rented an apartment at Xipo Second Team. There are three people in the Jinchang Security Bureau. One of them is named Jiang (who is now the warden in a rehabilitation center). He threatened, deceived and detained Wang Shuhua's husband, forcing him to reveal where Wang Shuhua was. As a result, the perpetrators found the girls' rented apartment and deceived them into opening the door. The two sisters were handcuffed together and taken to a security bureau building located at 86 Jianshe Road. The police interrogated the practitioners separately. Wang Shuhua was interrogated by Jiang and Liang Bo and Wang Ailing was interrogated by Xu Bin and Jia Jun. After detaining Wang Ailing for three days, the security bureau notified her father to bail her out. Before releasing her, Xu Bin and Jia Jun gave her their phone numbers and asked her to spy on practitioners. She needed to call and report to them if she found out about anyone distributing Falun Gong materials. Wang Ailing rejected their request. Wang Shuhua was detained for seven days, during which she was deprived of sleep for not cooperating with the interrogation. Seven days later, on August 24, she was sent to a detention center. She was not released until November 28.

On January 2, 2001, Liu Xingguo from the Ningyuan Security Office led several people to Ningyuanbao Town, Longjing Village. They once again deceived Wang Ailing into going to the security office. Liu Xingguo showed an arrest warrant and sent both sisters to the detention center. On January 7, Meng Jiaxian from the political and law office of Jinchuan Public Security Bureau, lied to the practitioners detained at Jinchang Detention Center by saying, "You are all released." Police then let them gather at the front entrance. They set up everything for a big gathering before hand. Cai Xuexiao and all directors from the various security offices were there. Four practitioners were sentenced to Pingantai Labor Camp. At that time the practitioners detained at Jinchang Detention Center and Jinchang Rehab Center included the following: Liu Guihua, Guo Qunying, Sun Ailing, Bai Sufang, Yang Chengmei, Li Guiying, Wang Shukun, Hao Jun, Wang Shuhua, Wang Ailing, Lei Zhanxiang, He Binying, Zhao Fenglian and Hou Youxiang. According to the practitioners detained at area #6, when they were arrested by the Binhe Road Security Office they were told that the form required to send them to a labor camp had already been filled out and that is why they were arrested.

Wang Ailing was forced to leave home to avoid further persecution because officials from Longshou Division, Jinchuan Division, the security bureau and the security office constantly went to her home to harass her. On December 7, 2003, she was arrested by the Lanzhou Security Bureau. In March 2005, she was illegally sentenced to eight years in prison by the Lanzhou Qilihe Court. Fearing that the list of perpetrators would be exposed, the court did not issue the verdict.

    3. Ma Zhigang is subjected to hanging and electric shocks in Lanzhou Prison

Mr. Ma Zhigang was born in March 1975. He worked in Jinchuan Company Oil Refinery. He started practicing Falun Gong in August or September of 1998. Since the persecution of Falun Gong started on July 20, 1999, his father had once beaten him up after being deceived by the propaganda. On New Year's Day 2000, Ma Zhigang and his brother went to appeal in Beijing. They were arrested at the West Rail Station in Beijing by agents from the public security bureau. The security office sent two people from Lanzhou to Beijing to take Ma Zhigang back. They forced him to pay the airfare and other travel expenses totaling several thousand yuan. Upon returning to Jinchang, Ma Zhigang was illegally detained for fifteen days at the Jinchang City Rehab Center. During this period of time other practitioners were arrested and detained.

Upon release from the rehab center, Ma Zhigang was immediately sent to the security office of the refinery and was subjected to forced "transformation." They tried to force him to promise not to practice Falun Gong. He was not allowed to go home. His brother was taken to another security office to be monitored 24 hours a day. Several dozen practitioners from Jinchuan Company were gathered there. They were forced to attend the brainwashing class, which lasted until New Year's Eve.

In August 2000, Ma Zhigang was notified to go to the security office to pick up his salary. Upon entering the security office, he was immediately arrested by people from Longshou Division. He was detained at Jinchuan Company's Quit Smoking Center for nearly two months. He was finally released after going on a hunger strike.

On March 8, 2002, Ma Zhigang was working at the factory when he was taken to the political and security office of Longshou Division. No longer able to bear the cruel torture, he jumped from the building, resulting in severe injuries to his right foot. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in a labor camp anyways. However, the labor camp refused to admit him because he was severely wounded and he had a heart problem. He was detained at Jinchang Rehab Center instead. To protest his detention, Ma Zhigang went on a hunger strike and was force-fed. When the force-feeding did not go as the perpetrators planned, they ordered a criminal to strike Mr. Ma's mouth with wooden sticks until wounds appeared. Ma Zhigang told the criminal, "you need to take legal responsibility for this." The vicious thug then handcuffed his hands and feet to a window. The director incited criminals to beat him up for several days straight, causing him incontinence. In December, the Public Security Bureau notified his family to bail him out. By then he was tortured to an extremely emaciated state.

In 2003, Ma Zhigang made some Falun Gong truth materials and was secretly followed by Jinchang National Security Bureau. He was arrested on April 22, 2003. He was severely tortured and hung up for nearly one week without sleep. On the eve of Chinese New Year 2004, Ma Zhigang was sentenced to 13 years in prison. There were three other practitioners who were also sentenced at that time. He was transferred from Jinchang City Detention Center to Lanzhou Prison.

At Lanzhou Prison, Ma Zhigang was beaten up. Only his parents and not other family members were allowed to visit him. In October of 2004, he was transferred to the 4th Group of Wuwei Prison. Ma Zhigang's father actively cooperated with the evil and requested escalated torture to force him to give up his belief. Sometimes he was hung up for one week straight. In October alone he was hung up for two weeks in total. Every day after being electric shocked he was handcuffed to a knitting machine for seven to eight hours. Fearing that others would see the wounds, the unlawful thugs isolated him from other inmates.

The labor camp has teams for seniors and for handicapped criminals (less of a workload was demanded from them). However, senior practitioners were never assigned to the seniors' team. They were forced to take the same workload as young people.

The Torture and Persecution I Experienced at the Jiamusi Labor Camp

I was arrested while distributing materials about the truth of Falun Gong in December 2002. On January 6, 2003, the public security sub-bureau of Jiamusi suburb sent me and nine other practitioners to the local labor camp without any legal procedure.

Upon our arrival at the labor camp, the assistant team leader Zhang Xiaodan swore fiercely at us in the corridor. When she was tired, she ordered officers to body search us. Another team leader, Liu Yadong, forced us to undress in the cold December weather and they even searched our underwear. When they found practitioners Kou Weixiang and Dai Lixia carrying Falun Gong articles, Liu Yadong immediately rushed up and kicked and beat them up while swearing at them.

Then Zhang Xiaodian shouted: "Any one have heart disease? I'll take you to see the doctor." Actually she was trying to trick us into going to a place to be tortured. We were led into dorms on the first floor, in which there were collaborators awaiting us. These people surrounded me and persuaded me to write statements to give up Falun Gong, but I told them I would never do such a thing. Liu Yadong and Zhang Xiaodan came there and asked: "Will she write the statements? If not, handcuff her." Then some of them pressed me on the bed, and wrested one of my arms under the side of bed to my back and the other arm up from my shoulder. Then they kept me in this position and handcuffed the wrists tightly. The handcuff cut into my muscle and I suffered painfully. This was the first time I was handcuffed in such a position.

The second time was in March. Because the police knew we were not brainwashed, they tried to force us to write the statements again. One of their methods was to handcuff us as described above one batch after another. A lot of fellow practitioners were severely injured this way and had their physical and mental health harmed considerably.

When it was my turn, the team leader Hong Wei asked me: "Will you write?" "I won't," I replied. Hong and some detainees rushed up and pressed me onto a bed. Then they handcuffed me in the same way as the last time. I almost fainted and wanted to vomit. After that my right arm would hurt whenever I exerted a bit of force. Policeman Jiang Jianan still ordered us to work for the labor camp no matter how injured we were. He threatened to extend our terms if we refused to work. My right arm didn't recover for over a year.

The third time was when we were forced to sit on small ridged stools from day to night because we refused to shout the slogans of the CCP. The police didn't allow us to say anything and let the detainees monitor us. We kept clarifying the truth to the police and told them that the persecution was wrong and we should not shout the slogans because we were not criminals. But they refused to listen to us. The general team leader, He Qiang, wrote down the slogan to slander our Teacher by himself and put it on the wall of a classroom and let us read. We could not bear such a vicious slander of our Teacher and tore it down. He Qiang immediately called over 10 guards headed by Wang Tiejun and all of them carried electric shock batons. These guards kicked and beat the Falun Gong practitioners and shocked them with the batons. Sixty-eight-year-old Zhang Lingde had a large blister on her face caused by electrical shock, and it is still visible now. Li Shumei and Zhang Cunzhi were hurt so badly they suffered incontinence of bowel and bladder. Even under these circumstances, Hong Wei continued to shock their bodies.

Guard Wang Tiejun seized me by the hair, pulled me to a dorm and handcuffed me to a bed. Zhang Xiaodan stopped him and said he should handcuff me in the more painful position described above. After they handcuffed me that way for a while, they put us into the classroom and handcuffed us together on a bed. Six of us were handcuffed by the sides of that iron bed, and our wrists were twisted tighter whenever the iron bed moved. All our weight fell on the handcuff and it was extremely painful.

The torment continued until the police had lunch. When they opened our handcuffs, Hong Wei said it was to give us some leniency as instructed by some leader. A female warden named Sun Limin forced us to read the slogans slandering our Teacher and, if we refused, they would handcuff us again. After that torture session, my arms were half disabled and it hurt so much that I couldn't get to sleep at night. Even after one year, I often feel pain in my left arm, and the wound from the handcuff on the back of my right hand is still there.

Seven Practitioners from Shandong, Liaoning, and Tianjin Die as a Result of Persecution

Ms. Yao Guimin, 43 years old, was a Falun Gong practitioner from North Ganquan Village in Luquantun Town, Wucheng County, Shandong Province. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in 1999, and she was illegally detained in the Wucheng Detention Center. After being released, the Wucheng and Luquantun CCP Committees frequently went to her home to harass her. She was arrested again after she went to Beijing to appeal at the end of 2000. She was sentenced to Jinan Forced Labor Camp for three years. While in the labor camp, she was forced to go through brainwashing sessions, hung up with handcuffs, beaten, exposed to extreme heat, forced to sit on a hard stool, and not allowed to use the toilet. Her body and mind were severely injured. Even though she was released at the end of 2003, the authorities of Wucheng and Luquantun continued to harass her. Also, the court forced her and her husband to divorce because she practiced Falun Gong and canceled her residence status. Under these various pressures, the illnesses caused by persecution in the labor camp resulted her death on November 9, 2005.

Mr. Bai Jiazhen, 60 years old, was a retired official of a town government in Shandong Province. After practicing Falun Gong, many of his illnesses disappeared, and he had very good health. However, the police illegally searched his home, threatened him, and canceled his salary when Falun Gong was banned on July 20 of 1999. He was sentenced to a forced labor camp after returning from appealing for Falun Gong in Beijing. In the labor camp, he was treated inhumanely, was forced to labor beyond his physical strength, and was forced to suffer brainwash sessions. He developed mental problems and died on September 19, 2004, on the lunar calendar.

Mr. Li Feng, 66 years old, was a practitioner from Xinbing County, Fushun City, Liaoning Province. The police illegally searched his home on January 18, 2002, and detained him for 20 days in the detention center. Mr. Li was arrested again when he handed out materials clarifying the facts of the persecution on January 27, 2003, and he was sentenced to a forced labor camp for three years. Both his body and mind were damaged in the labor camp. On October 26, 2004, he was released to see a doctor and died on June 17, 2005.

Mr. Wang Junting, 67, was a Falun Gong practitioner from Tianjin City. Both he and his wife were illegally arrested in 2001 and detained in the Nankai Detention Center. After that, his wife was sentenced to Tianjin Banqiao Women's Forced Labor Camp for one and a half years. She suffered hard labor and torture. After Mr. Wang was released, the police frequently harassed him. Under the extreme mental and economic pressure, his heart failed, and he died on October 25, 2005.

Mr. Sun Hongjun, 68 years old, was a retired worker from the Shanxi Diesel Factory in Datong City, Shanxi Province. After learning Falun Gong in 1994, all of his original illnesses left him. After the persecution began on July 20, 1999, the factory's and local police officers frequently harassed him. In order to avoid them, he went elsewhere to find work for three years, beginning in October 1999. He didn't keep up his practice well and suffered extreme illness. He died on October 2, 2005.

Ms. Guo jingzhe, 48 years old, was a resident of Dawei Village, Shenzhou City, Hebei Province. She started to practice Falun Gong in 1996 and benefited greatly. She was cured of her hepatitis. When the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal and was detained and brainwashed when she returned home. Under the great pressure, she wrote a guarantee statement against her will, promising to not practice Falun Gong anymore. She felt very sorry and she developed serious liver problems because she had stopped the practice. Helped by practitioners, she renounced her guarantee, and started to practice again. She resisted all persecution from the local government and other evil people. After that, her child passed the college examination. The police used it as a reason to harass and threaten her. It seriously harmed her body and mind. Ms. Guo Jingzhe died in July 2004.

Ms. Kang Xiaorong, 92 years old, was a resident of Yuke Dongjingmeng Village, Shenzhou City, Hebei Province. Because her feet had been bound, she couldn't stand steadily and swayed when she first went to the exercise site in 1996. That night, she dreamed that Teacher healed her feet. She could then stand securely when exercising the next day. One night she found blood in her urine. When she got up the next morning, she felt light in her whole body, and she found that the tumor that had grown in her stomach for several dozen years had disappeared. On July 20, 1999, the persecution began, and the environment changed. Eight practitioners from her family went to Beijing to appeal against the persecution of Falun Gong, and they were illegally detained, fined, forced with brainwash sessions, and forced to clean the streets. Because this elderly woman was harmed and harassed by the police, she didn't dare to practice anymore. Her health got worse and worse, and her mind was not clear. She died on October 14, 2003, on the lunar calendar.
