  • Ms. Li Bin Recalls How She Was Tortured and Shocked by Guards in the Beijing Labor Camp Dispatch Office

On August 8, 2000, the courtyard of the Beijing labor camp dispatch office appeared well guarded.

    Li Bin
It is usually hot in Beijing at that time of the year. Against the background of dead silence, one could hear a threatening voice and the sizzling noise of electric shocks. Even when no one violates the rules they set, the guards are all equipped with an electric baton at their waist. Some keep it in their hands to show off their power. Once in a while they discharge electricity into the air, making a sizzling noise to frighten people. It is a horrendous sound.

One day, the police sent several new "forced labor members" (practitioners illegally sentenced to a forced labor camp). One of them was a girl named Li Bin. She wore a white T-shirt and gray pants. As she entered the courtyard, she immediately sensed the atmosphere of terror. A person in a blue uniform came and led her to a small dark room. It may have been a storage room. Then she heard a shout, "Squat! Hold your head!" She was being told to squat with both hands behind her head. Then the person stripped and body-searched her. Completely unprepared for this, Li Bin raised her head a little. Suddenly, she was slapped in the face and heard the shout, "Do not raise your head!"

Dear readers, you may think that this person was a police guard. Actually she was an inmate that was sentenced to forced labor camp for stealing. Insiders call her "Xiao Shao." She was encouraged by the authorities and did whatever she pleased, thinking that she had been given an "important mission."

After torturing Li Bin for half a day, Xiao Shao threw her a blue uniform, exactly the same as the one she wore. She shouted, "Put it on!"

That afternoon, all the newcomers were treated by Xiao Shao like slaves. She rapidly repeated the orders, "Squat, get up, squat, get up!" A woman over 70 years old received the same treatment. Xiao Shao also ordered her to shout, "Report! Present! Yes, Madam!" Because she had received an order from the guards, Xiao Shao beat up whomever she thought was not obedient. After finishing the training, everyone had their hair cut off, both young and old.

After this Li Bin experienced ruthless torture, especially electric shocks, which nearly killed her.

Everyone was taken individually into a small room with the doors and windows sealed. When it was Li Bin's turn, two female guards interrogated her and took notes. Then they started the barbaric "training." Each of them held an electric baton, 70 centimeters long, and ordered Li Bin to squat with both hands behind her head. They then started to shock her.

When I first heard Li Bin describe her experience, my deepest sympathies were aroused. I was shocked that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was capable of such atrocities. How was she able to endure such ruthless torture? To find out, I interviewed her. The following is the record of that interview:

Reporter: It frightens me to even imagine an electric baton, but I have never seen a real one used in a labor camp in China. Can you describe it?

Li Bin: Every electric baton is about 70 centimeters long. It is black. There are two electrodes at one end and an insulated handle at the other. I have heard that the sparks they emit are blue. Because I was ordered to squat with both hands behind my head and tortured until I was close to fainting, I did not have the chance to see what color they were. I only heard the sizzling noise and later found out that everyone in the courtyard had heard it. I then realized why they had ordered others to close all the doors and windows. I screamed because of the excruciating pain. Only by crying out could I relieve the pain a little. The guards order all the instructors, "Close the doors and windows immediately!" Then I heard the sound of closing doors and windows.

Reporter: How did it feel when you were shocked by electric batons?

Li Bin: At that time it was really hot in Beijing. One could sweat even without moving around. When the guards us shocked me, I sweat all over and my clothes were wet. I first felt pain, as if I was being pierced with needles. I heard the sizzling noise. It was truly horrendous. I could also smell the burning of my hair and skin.

Sometimes the electricity went to my brain. That was even worse. It felt like I was having a seizure because the nerves were stimulated on top of the pain. You can only try to imagine what kind of feeling that is.

Reporter: Where did the police shock you?

Li Bin: When they shocked me on my back, they picked the most tender parts. Where the limbs connect to the body are the most tender. They shocked me on those parts. Meanwhile, they shouted, cursed, threatened, and humiliated me. They did not allow me to speak. I suffered both physically and mentally.

Reporter: Were you squatting while they shocked you?

Li Bin: I fell to the ground several times. The two female guards then dragged me up by the arms and ordered me to continue to squat. In addition, they ordered me to keep the correct position, which was to squat with both hands behind my head. They continued to shock me. I do not remember how many times I fell. I only remember that I sweat all over. My back was very painful, as if stitched by needles. I also felt numb.

Reporter: If it does not bother you too much, can you describe the pain?

Li Bin: How should I put it? Let's say, when the electricity goes through you, you feel pain and numbness and your brain twitches. At that moment, you would not even fear someone stabbing you with a knife. However, you are alive and you are feeling the pain. You can say that every cell and every nerve feels pain and is struck by the powerful electric current. Furthermore, although I felt as if I was close to fainting, I could clearly feel the pain. Every nerve in my body was sensitive to the pain. At that moment, I knew the meaning of "living is worse than dying." I cannot describe it adequately in words. I am just trying my best. You cannot believe how painful it is.

Reporter: We can only imagine it through your description.

Li Bin: You know, they shocked you one part after another, bit by bit. At first they shocked you on the tenderest parts. Then they shocked me all over my body, and I could not even tell which part they were shocking. I only felt that my brain, the back of my neck, and the parts where my limbs connect to my body were especially painful. When I came to, I realized that they had shocked my entire back. My entire back was burned. But I could not feel it. I only felt that my brain, the back of my neck, and the parts where my limbs connected to my body were especially painful.

How should I describe the pain? It is just painful, like being poked by needles. If one needle pokes you, you feel the pain. If two needles poke you, you feel double the pain. When they shock you with electric batons, it's as if they are poking you with many needles. Can you imagine how it feels? Of course, electric shock is much worse than being poked by needles. It is a formidable electric flow. Some people may have experienced being shocked with electricity. However, that is only for a second. It doesn't last. Electric baton shocking lasts for a long time, until your skin is burned. The sizzling noise alone is very frightening.

At last, even the guards were too tired to hold the batons. Can you imagine how painful it is for the victims?

I was shocked by two electric batons simultaneously. Others were shocked by many more. It was much worse. Some were shocked with seven or eight electric batons. Some guards even inserted the electric baton directly to a victim's mouth. The victim fainted immediately and fell unconscious. One girl who was a Falun Gong practitioner and was one year younger than me fainted right away.

Reporter: How do people who were sent the the labor camp later respond to the torture you suffered?

Li Bin: After shocking me, police put me into the 2nd class. There were eight classes in the courtyard. When I first entered the room, they looked at me in surprise. Later they told me secretly, "Do you know when you first entered, your face was pale and your lips were blue. We were all frightened for you."

Many people know this fact: In China, some police use torture to force suspects to confess. This has resulted in many false accusations and unjustified cases. How do the police do that? Why did people admit that they committed murder while in fact they did not? Did they not know that they would have to pay with their own lives? It is because they couldn't withstand the physical torture and admitted to things they had not done against their will. Even though they know that once they confess they will have to die, they still do it. The torture the CCP uses in their interrogations is truly cruel. Many people could not withstand the feeling of "to live is worse than to die."

Dear readers, please do not think that Ms. Li Bin must have committed a crime to be tortured like this. She only told the truth about Falun Gong and appealed to the Chinese government, explaining that Falun Gong practitioners are kind people. As a result, she was arrested and tortured.

The Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners at Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp in Hebei Province

Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp in Hebei Province is notorious for its persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

I was held at this labor camp and witnessed the dark truth behind so-called "helping, educating and reforming" of Falun Gong practitioners who persisted in their belief in Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance.

On one occasion, high-level officials came to the labor camp to inspect the work unit. The camp authorities had made thorough arrangements beforehand. They divided incarcerated Falun Gong practitioners into two sections on the day of inspection. The first group of practitioners was assigned to sing and dance in the courtyard, and the other group sat in a large classroom to receive "ideological education." Some practitioners had just returned from twelve hours of overnight slave labor.

The inspection group didn’t arrive until noon. When the motorcade entered the courtyard, the dance group moved more vigorously, and the "education" class was conducted in an orderly manner. Some practitioners carrying a large basin with food on their way back from the cafeteria ran into members of the inspection group. The inspectors asked what was inside the basin and the practitioners answered, "Food for [Falun Gong] practitioners." The inspectors were shocked because there was nothing but black gooey fluid inside the bowl and said, "This is food for human beings?" After this encounter, the labor camp waited until the inspection groups left before starting a meal. The cafeteria for the several hundred practitioners is an abandoned and dilapidated warehouse about 330 feet from where the practitioners live. The practitioners had to carry the food from the cafeteria for each meal. One time the practitioners ran into an inspection group and hid the food in the restroom.

Ma Li, head of the women’s group, assembled some practitioners and told them, "First, Falun Gong practitioners are forbidden from revealing that they participate in manual labor, and second, they are forbidden from saying that verbal and physical abuse is used during brainwashing." The camp authorities also did not permit the inmates to record the actual 12-hour work shifts for which the inmates are responsible. Instead, six hours is a preferred entry in the records, and the most one could write down was eight hours. Whoever did not comply with this procedure would be punished with a sentence extension.

Gaoyang Labor Camp used many methods to "reform" Falun Gong practitioners, and they can be divided into two types. In the first method, several group leaders are assigned to monitor one practitioner or several practitioners. The second method is tactless brutal torture.

The following are persecution incidents Falun Gong practitioners have experienced.

Practitioner Ms. Song Guixian held a hunger strike for fifteen months to protest the persecution while being held at the labor camp. She was shocked with high-voltage electric batons many times during that period. On one occasion, her face was black and blue and deformed from beatings. Despite her weak condition from the long-term hunger strike, the guards still forced her to sift sand. Male guard Fang Bao also repeatedly threw Ms. Song against a pile of sand before she started working. Ms. Song’s nostrils became deformed from long-term feeding-tube insertion. The inmates found some used sanitary napkins from the women’s restroom and shoved them into Ms. Song’s mouth with encouragement from the guards.

Practitioner Wang Chunmei was held in a specially-made secret chamber for six days. The walls in this chamber are covered in slanderous and insulting words and cartoons. A loudspeaker and purple light are also installed in the room. The guards monitor activities inside the chamber from a room across the hall. We found that the source of the strange noise that disrupted the quiet of the night was actually the loudspeaker, which was being used while Falun Gong practitioners were being tortured.

Ms. Wang Chunmei was deprived of sleep while she was held in the chamber. The guards turned the loudspeaker to a very high volume to keep her from falling asleep. Her legs became swollen and numb. She could not stand up before she was taken out of the chamber and it took her a long time to regain the ability to walk. The guards also pressed wooden columns against her legs. One time a guard put snakes and geckos inside Ms. Wang’s clothing and shocked and fried the geckos with electric batons when they came out. He did it to intimidate Ms. Wang. Ms. Wang persisted in her belief in Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance and was placed under "Strict Control," which means she was watched around the clock.

Practitioner Ms. Xu Suxia was held in solitary confinement for several months right after she was brought into the labor camp. When we saw her for the first time, the flesh on her ankles had ulcerated, and there were blisters on her arms and hands from repeated electric shock. She was dragged outside one winter night and handcuffed to a tree for several hours. They also left her in a room without any heating system for several days. She persisted in her belief in Falun Gong. She was locked in a room for more than twenty days without any quilt or bedding. She slept on a wooden board. A male guard pushed his feet down onto her chest until she almost suffocated.

Practitioner Ms. Xiao Changying, in her thirties, was held in solitary confinement for several months. She was savagely beaten and shocked with electric batons many times. A group leader had once boasted, "Hu Dao [another guard] violently shook Xiao Changying’s head while cursing at her." I also was subjected to verbal insults from Hu Dao and I felt he did not behave normally.

Practitioner Ms. Wu Guifang was handcuffed in an old warehouse for several days. The guards who watched her wore thick coats and used a heater. Another time, the persecutors handcuffed Ms. Wu to the metal flagpole in the middle of the courtyard. The guards wore military coats and they kept stomping their feet because of the freezing cold, yet Ms. Wu wasn’t wearing any heavy clothing and was handcuffed from morning until curfew at night.

Practitioner Ms. Li Wenping was held in the warehouse for three days. Her hands were tied to the two metal rings affixed to the floor. She was forced to squat and could not move her back or legs. She didn’t sleep or wash herself for three days. Her legs were numb afterwards and she could barely lift them. She tripped frequently when walking.

Practitioner Ms. Li Jianying went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. Every day, two inmates grabbed her arms and dragged her around. They pulled her down the stairs with her head pointing downwards. Her body scraped against the concrete steps. They dragged her up and down the stairs twice each day, causing her to become severely bruised. Her condition deteriorated quickly, and the authorities then released her to avoid being held responsible.

The first time I saw practitioner Ms. Chen Hongping, she had difficulty walking and needed help getting to the restroom. One of her legs dragged listlessly on the floor and the other leg was deformed. Another practitioner told me that her disability was the result of torture. I had not seen her for a few days. When I met her again, she was emaciated and pale. Soon, we heard she was sent away as she was dying. We later confirmed her death.

Practitioner Ms. Zhang Xiumei was shocked with electric batons many times. The guards slapped her face with hard-soled plastic shoes and forced her to raise her arms and lower her head below her knees. Her face became severely swollen after one day of torture. She refused to read slanderous articles, and she recited Falun Gong articles. The guards gagged her with dirty towels and handcuffed her to a bed railing. Once when the guards couldn’t find a towel, they ordered the class head, an inmate, to dip Ms. Zhang’s own towel in filthy water and put it into her mouth.

She was carried into a crop field during the Sixteenth Party Congress and several police officers took turns shocking her with electric batons. Her legs turned black and blue and were swollen, and it was difficult for her to even get into bed.

Practitioner Ms. Li Jinsheng was in her fifties. The guards locked her in a room for doing the Falun Gong exercises. They handcuffed her to a wooden board for six days. During this period they purposely dislocated her shoulder(s). After six days, they placed her under around the clock watch.

Practitioner Ms. Liu Shuzhen underwent forced brainwashing and wrote a guarantee statement. She later declared that the statement was void and she would continue to practice Falun Gong. She was locked in a room on the top floor and was watched and handcuffed around the clock. The guards taped her mouth to prevent her from shouting "Falun Dafa is good!"

Practitioner Ms. Jia Rongjuan persisted in Falun Gong practice and was brutally tortured. One day late at night, screaming was heard coming from Room M in the West Building, and nearly every practitioner in the yard heard it. Several days later, Ms. Jia appeared in the restroom. She had difficulty walking and the inmates who were assigned to watch her were angry toward the guards for the atrocity inflicted on her. The inmates revealed the truth about her torture. They pulled up her clothes to show us her wounds. Her entire back was covered in black dots and some of her flesh was charred from electric shocks. The guards had simultaneously shocked her with five electric batons. Group leader Yang Zemin personally directed and participated in this crime.

Practitioner Ms. Cui Xiuzhen, 60 years old, was dragged out and tortured overnight for more than ten days straight and was always carried back the next morning. The guards pushed her head into a basin of pepper powder. They also pinched her nipples, shocked her with electric batons and savagely beat her. Her body was covered with wounds and she had difficulty walking after only a few days. She was tortured this way repeatedly for days and even months on end.

One time the guards dragged out Ms. Liu Yuling, in her 60s, and shocked her with electric batons. She lost consciousness and became incontinent. She was rushed overnight to the Gaoyang County Hospital and was in critical condition for two days.

Practitioner Ms. Wu Shouzhi had both feet shocked with six electric batons at the same time, and suffered a mental collapse. She was handcuffed to a bed for several months, and her family was not allowed to see her. Her family eventually bailed her out and sent her to a hospital.

Practitioner Ms. Zhang Xiuying had her face shocked with electric batons, which caused deafness.

I was also beaten and shocked with electric batons. One time a male guard ground on my naked toes with his army boots until the skin came off. I was locked in solitary confinement. The guards pointed at the floor and said to me, "This is hell on earth. We simply have to make you feel you are better off dead! You can’t die now, even if you want to. You can die only if we allow you to die, and you won’t be able to die if we don’t let you die. If we beat you to death, it’ll be counted as suicide. We won’t let your husband see your body, because we’ll cremate it on the spot. Afterwards, we’ll tell your husband to come get your ashes, and he will have to pay for the cremation!" He also said with a big smile, "Your husband won’t dare to say anything to anyone!"

I have only exposed a part of the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Several hundred Falun Gong practitioners have been held at Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp in the past few years. I merely wanted to use the aforementioned examples to testify to the countless atrocities committed there.

Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Guo Lirong from Chengdu City Persecuted to the Point of Multiple-Organ Failure

Reports on the Minghui website (Chinese version of Clearwisdom.net) from September 13 and September 28, 2006 relate the persecution of Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Guo Lirong from Chengdu City. She was illegally arrested after work on September 8, 2006. Ms. Guo went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was taken to the Qingyang District People’s Hospital, a prison hospital that colludes with government officials in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. She was handcuffed in a hospital bed and forcibly given an IV infusion. It was recently learned that Guo Lirong has developed symptoms of multiple-organ failure due to long-term persecution, and her life is in danger. The police released her on October 8, 2006.

Guo Lirong, 45 years old, is a former electrical engineer previously employed by the Qianfeng Electronics Corporation Ltd. Her technical work required her to bend her neck over a desk for long periods of time, which resulted in neck problems. She underwent neck stretching therapy and took Chinese herbal medicine, but they did not help her. She learned many different kinds of qigong and sought out qigong masters, but their skills did not work for her. However, after she started practicing Falun Gong in 1997, Ms. Guo experienced great changes and became very energetic.

Officials at the Qianfeng Electronics Corporation Ltd. fired her after July 20, 1999, when the persecution of Falun Gong began, because she remained steadfast in her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and continued to practice Falun Gong. She was detained many times and was twice sent to a forced labor camp. There were several times when Ms. Guo left her home to avoid persecution.

Police officers arrested Guo Lirong at work on the afternoon of February 14, 2001. She could not go home after leaving the police station because the police were monitoring her home. Ms. Guo went to a temple on October 7, 2001 to clarify the truth to monks, but they reported her to the police. She was sent to a labor camp to be held for one year. Ms. Guo developed pleural effusion while in detention.

The Fuqing Road Administration Office 610 Office head, Tang Xiadong, led more than ten police officers who broke into Guo Lirong’s home on September 1, 2005. They took her to the Chenghua District Brainwashing Center and also ransacked her home. Ms. Guo went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. She was on the brink of death at 5:30 p.m. on September 7, 2005.

The police again broke into Ms. Guo's home on March 1, 2006 and tried to arrest her. She was not home, so the plan was aborted. However, she had to stay away from home for more than three months to avoid arrest. The police were staked out outside her home and also followed her family members for more than one month. Ms. Guo finally returned home in June 2006.

She had worked at a new job for less than one month in August 2006 when the Fuqing Road Administration 610 Office agents and officers from the Fuqing Road Police Station waited at the bike parking area and arrested her. They took her to a custody center.

Tang Xiaodong led more than ten police officers who broke into Guo Lirong’s home at 8:00 p.m. that same day. They ransacked her home and also her parents’ home. Guo Lirong’s mother was so frightened that she suffered a heart attack. From then on, whenever she saw people wearing police uniforms in real life or on TV she would scream, "They are coming for my daughter!"

Guo Lirong held a hunger strike in the custody center to protest the persecution and was taken to the Qingyang District People’s Hospital, a place that specializes in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. She was handcuffed to a bed and given an IV infusion. Guo Lirong’s father saw his daughter in handcuffs and shackles when visiting her at the hospital on September 15, 2006.

The devious Party officials didn’t give Guo Lirong’s father a detention notice until September 15, 2006. The detention notice accused Ms. Guo of "Using a [slanderous term omitted] to disrupt the administration of law." However, the notice that was sent to the detention center says, "delivering Falun Gong materials at Hehua Jin Pond."

Guo Lirong is extremely weak from the hunger strike. She is suffering from electrolyte imbalance after being given unknown substances through the IV infusion. She vomited the drugs and is experiencing multiple-organ failure. Her family members took Guo Lirong home on October 8, 2006. The officials refused to answer questions when her family asked for the reason of the arrest.

People responsible for Guo Lirong's persecution:

Tang Xiaodong: head of the Fuqing Road Administration Office in Chengdu City, who specializes in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. He arrested many practitioners who work at PO Box 40, the former Qianfeng Electronic Corporation Ltd., the knife factory, 512 Factory, and other places of work. Some practitioners were arrested more than eight times. He sent the practitioners to labor camps and brainwashing centers.

In Remembrance of Practitioner Mr. Zhang Zhong

I was shocked to see the news that Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Zhong from Chongqing City had been persecuted to death. I did not want to believe its was true. Vivid images of the persevering glow in Zhang Zhong's eyes, his honest smile and pure image surfaced in my mind. He was such a young man. He was so healthy only a year ago when I saw him, but in just one year, he was persecuted to death. How will his older mother bear such sorrow? And how will his illegally imprisoned wife be able to take it? He has passed away under such injustice!

I first met Mr. Zhang Zhong before the persecution began on July 20, 1999. He was a volunteer coordinator for his area. From other practitioners, I learned that he always came early and left last, silently putting in extra effort for everyone. At his workplace, everyone knew him as a great young man. My first impression of him was that he was very honest and approachable. Not long after he and his wife were married, both of them wholeheartedly practiced Falun Gong. From them, I could feel the tremendous joy that Falun Gong had brought them.

After July 20, 1999, they were both illegally arrested after refusing to give up practicing Falun Gong. Zhang Zhong was sentenced to twelve years and imprisoned at the Hongweixing Prison in Daqing City. His wife Ms. He Zhihong was sentenced to three years in a labor camp at the Harbin Rehabilitation Center (now known as the Heilongjiang Women's Labor Camp). Three years later, Ms. He returned to an empty house. She went to the Hongweixing Prison to see her husband twice, but the prison guard only allowed her to see him briefly from afar. How could she have imagined that this would be the last time she would see her husband? Not long after, Ms. He was arrested once again by the corrupt officials for clarifying the truth. She is currently imprisoned at the Heilongjiang Women's Labor Camp once again for further persecution.

In 2004, after suffering a series of inhumane tortures, Mr. Zhang Zhong was in critical condition – all his organs were malfunctioning, he had spasms in muscles all over his body, partial psychological paralysis, breathing complications, irregular heartbeat and he was in a coma for long periods of time. His blood pressure constantly oscillated around 40-50 mm. Hg. He was reduced to skin and bones. Only in this near-death situation did the prison agree to have him bailed out for medical treatment. Even then, the city was barricaded and Zhang Zhong was not allowed to go outside Daqing City for treatment in Harbin. Seeing his emaciated son, Zhang Zhong's father could only cry silently and helplessly. While it seemed truly hopeless at the time, Falun Gong saved Zhang Zhong. With the help of fellow practitioners, Zhang Zhong was able to recover after a month of practicing and reading Falun Gong books.

The second time I saw Zhang Zhong was during an experience-sharing conference. I saw a young adult reading his paper and felt that he looked very familiar. I realized suddenly: Isn't this Zhang Zhong who had been persecuted so badly only a few months ago? It was miraculous, within a few months, he had recovered so well. I was filled with admiration from the bottom of my heart for how miraculous Falun Gong is!

The third time I saw Zhang Zhong was in August 2005. In the intense heat of the summer, he was wearing thick sweat pants and a jacket. I was saddened immediately. By this time, Zhang Zhong had fled his home to avoid arrest. Seeing his weathered silhouette and the persevering glow in his eyes, I was reminded of his heartwarming family, and I was reminded of his wife that he rarely saw... However, he rose above the hindrance of these worries, and persevered forward on his chosen path of truth.

I had never thought that today, a year hence, such a young life would be persecuted to death. Many, many people are saddened by his departure.

The CCP Is Arresting Falun Gong Practitioners with the Excuse of Protecting the Olympics

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Fengqiu from Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province was arrested on October 30, 2006, and taken to Masanjia Labor Camp in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Her "crime" was that "Falun Gong interferes with the Olympics."

On the morning of October 30, 2006, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Fengqiu from Jinzhou City was arrested by policemen from the Taihe District Department and Xijiao Station, and she was sent to the Masanjia Labor Camp in Shenyang City in the afternoon. When Ms. Li's family member went to the Taihe District Police Department to request her release, Officer Han Yaobang from the legal justice office told them that she had been sent to the Masanjia Labor Camp. The provincial level ordered her arrest, and the City Police Department head Wang Lijun signed the arrest warrant. They said that Falun Gong was interfering with the 2008 Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing, and hence, all Falun Gong coordinators must be arrested.

Ms. Li Fengqiu's son is still not at the age of 18. His father has died, and his mother is arrested. He is leading a terribly difficult life.

In the past seven years, there are Falun Gong practitioners being arrested or even killed everyday in China. The job of hosting the Olympics was given to the CCP government, which is notorious for human rights violations. Doing so has given the CCP another excuse to brutally commit genocide against Falun Gong practitioners and trample on the Chinese people's human rights.

The Plight of a Woman Worker’s Family in Wuhan

Ms. Hu Mingxiu, a former employee of Renfu Ltd. Company in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, is 54 years old. She began practicing Falun Gong in April 1996. Her husband previously suffered from a spinal disc protrusion and bone hyperplasia. He was paralyzed in December 1994. Her son was also disabled and needed assistance in daily life. Ms. Hu Mingxiu worked hard to take care of these two family members and led a difficult life.

One day, someone introduced Falun Gong to Ms. Hu's husband, Liu Shuisheng. At the beginning, he could not do the exercises. All he could do was to listen to Master Li’s lectures on tape. Six months later, a miracle happened, and Liu Shuisheng began to walk. Soon he found his way to an outdoor practice site. All of his diseases were cured.

After seeing her husband’s miraculous change, Hu Mingxiu also began learning Falun Gong. She listened to Master Li’s lecture tapes at home. Soon, she too became very healthy. Her outlook on the world also completely changed and she was no longer depressed. She became happy and optimistic.

But the good times did not last long. On July 20, 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began persecuting Falun Gong. From October 1999 to present, Hu Mingxiu has been detained five times. Her husband Liu Yongsheng has been arrested three times and he is now detained in Qinduankou Prison. Her family’s home was ransacked three times. Her elderly mother ultimately died from the stress of this long-term intimidation.

This tragic story began in October 1999. Ms. Hu Mingxiu went to Beijing to tell the government the facts about Falun Gong, but she was not able to see any officials in the visitors’ reception office at the appeals bureau. Instead, she was arrested by the police and sent to Wuhan’s liaison office in Beijing. The next day, she was sent back to Tangjiadun Police Branch in Wuhan. There she was detained in a steel cage with no bed or chair in it. Everyone was detained in the same place regardless of gender. People were not even allowed to use the toilet. She was locked up there for an entire evening without food or water.

In the following fifteen days, Hu Mingxiu was sent to Minyi Clinic near Liuduqiao at night, and during the day, she was escorted back to the police branch at Tangjiadun. She was forced to write an "understanding" statement opposing the practice of Falun Gong. The police then asked her to write a promise not to visit Beijing or contact other Falun Gong practitioners before she could be released. The Chinese Constitution, however, says that petitioning the government is a citizen’s right. After Falun Gong practitioners exercised these constitutional rights, they were being treated like criminals.

One early morning in March 2000, at about 2:00 a.m., several people from the Jianghan District 610 Office, Tangjiadun Community Office, Xiangjiang Neighborhood Committee, as well as the local police came to Hu Mingxiu’s house. Several men forced their way into her house and asked that Hu Mingxiu come to the police station to have a talk. After they tricked her into going to the local police branch, without reason they gave her a month-long detention sentence. Hu Mingxiu was detained in the Baofeng Road Seventh Police Station #1 office. A month later, the police still refused to release her. Instead, they sent her to the Jianghan District Beixincun Brainwashing Program for two more months. The people in the brainwashing program forced the Falun Gong practitioners to write letters promising not to visit Beijing or contact each other. If they refused, they would not be permitted to go home.

To uphold justice for Falun Gong and report the law violations by the local government agencies and police, Hu Mingxiu’s husband Liu Shuisheng went to Beijing to appeal to the central government in October of 2000. He was arrested and taken back to Wuhan, where he was detained in the Edaopeng Brainwashing Program for two weeks.

In the first half of 2001, people from the Jianghan District 610 Office, the party secretary and director from Tangjiadun Community Office and Xiangjiang Neighborhood Committee, along with local police, made separate arrests of Hu Mingxiu and her husband Liu Shuisheng at different places. Liu was tricked into coming to the police branch and Hu was arrested at her workplace, Renfu Medicine Co. Ltd. Subsequently, the authorities sent them to the Beixincun brainwashing session in Jianghan District. They also went to search their home and confiscate Falun Gong books, tapes and Master Li’s portrait. Hu Mingxiu’s mother was so scared by their violent act that she fell ill. She died in August 2001. Hu Mingxiu’s husband Liu Shuisheng was detained for over two months.

On a late evening in July 2002, seven to eight people from the Tangjiadun Police Station, the Jianghan District 610 Office and the Neighborhood Administration came to her house to harass her again. They ordered Hu Mingxiu to open the door and pushed their way into the house. When they could not find her husband, they became angry and left. From that day on, her husband could no longer return home. The family was torn apart. In order to take care of her son, Hu Mingxiu filed for early retirement. She had to feed the family with her meager pension.

On March 10, 2003, Liu Shuisheng was arrested by the 610 Office personnel on Jiangjun Road of the Dongxiwu area of Wuhan. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. On April 2, 2003, at 9:00 a.m., seven or eight people from the Jianghan District 610 Office, the party secretary and director from Tangjiadun Village, as well as Xiangjiang Neighborhood Administration rushed into Hu Mingxiu’s house to arrest her. Even her guests were arrested. They also confiscated some Falun Gong books. They once again sent Hu Mingxiu directly to the Beixincun Brainwashing Center and detained her there for 23 days. During this time, her disabled son was sent to a hospital because he could not care for himself. In the brainwashing center, the guards did not allow her to sleep. Every day, they forced her to listen to recordings defaming Master Li and Falun Gong. They forcibly attempted to make her give up her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. They also forced her to denounce and write criticism papers on other practitioners. This is all part of the CCP’s brainwashing program as part of the persecution against Falun Gong.

Despite such severe tribulations, Ms. Hu Mingxiu was not discouraged in her pursuit of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Practice Falun Gong adn wanting to be a good person is not wrong anywhere. Ms. Hu often has tried to visit her husband, sometimes with her son. But so far, she has not been allowed to see him even once, because she is also a Falun Gong practitioner.

In the summer of 2005, Hu Mingxiu paid another visit to Qinduankou Prison, hoping that she could see her husband. But this time the prison did not even let his own brother see him. When Ms. Hu tried to reason with the prison, officer Liu Wei called the 110 police hot line to report that Hu was "disturbing the peace." Police from Qinduankou Station came and arrested Hu. They kept her locked up for five hours before releasing her.

Jiuquan Prison Authorities in Gansu Province Frenziedly Persecute Falun Gong Practitioners

The order from the 610 Office of Jiuquan City, Gansu Province was that 80 percent of Falun Gong practitioners must be "transformed" at Jiuquan Prison, but the chief of the prison was more ambitious, saying, "The target here is 100 percent, and all of them must be transformed." To achieve this goal, the policemen from Jiuquan Prison resorted to all kinds of vicious means to torture Falun Gong practitioners.

At the end of 2005, all of the steadfast Falun Gong practitioners illegally detained in a prison in Gansu Province were transferred to Jiuquan Prison by fully-armed policemen. The practitioners later learned that one month prior to their arrival, policemen had provided the prisoners with detailed information about the practitioners, such as their photos, names, and so on, and told them that they could do anything they thought effective to force Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their belief. They were told that it was fine to beat them to death, too, and when that happened it would be reported as a death by natural causes.

When Falun Gong practitioners were brought in, prisoners tried to force them to write the "four statements." Practitioners who refused to give in would be brutally tortured by policemen and prisoners alike. The torture methods include the following:

    1. Scalding with boiling water and burning with cigarette butts;

    2. Striking with a iron hook and scalding with a heated iron hook;

    3. Eight policemen and prisoners hold one practitioners down and savagely beat him;

    4. Placing live rats in practitioners' pants;

    5. Chaining practitioners in a way that they could neither stand nor squat;

    6. Beating practitioners with baseball bats;

    7. Wrenching practitioners' arms behind their backs and pressing the backs of their necks against the wall.

In the prison, Falun Gong practitioners were often seen with bloody, swollen faces and their bodies were covered with bruises. Those who refused to be "transformed" would be deprived of sleep. If a team had Falun Gong practitioners who refused to be "transformed," that whole team would be restricted. Sometimes as soon as a police team leader dismissed a prisoners' meeting after announcing that a certain team would be restricted, the inmates in that team would surround Falun Gong practitioners and beat them, with policemen standing there watching. Ward 6 was the worst in the whole prison, and practitioners from other wards who refused to be "transformed" would be transferred to Ward 6 to be subjected to heavier punishment.

When Falun Gong practitioners' families came to visit them, they saw that their loved ones were in bad physical condition. They asked the police if they were beaten. The police replied: "We didn't beat anyone here, but they would not be allowed to sleep if they refused to be transformed." In fact, it is routine that the policemen and inmates beat Falun Gong practitioners. Fearing that their vicious deeds would be exposed to the public, they did everything they could to block the truth.

Quite a few Falun Gong practitioners have implicitly expressed a message to their families: we have been brutally tortured here and probably won't get out of here live.

Wang Zexing, a Falun Gong practitioner from Jiaojiazhuang Town of Yongchang County who has been sentenced to ten years in prison, has suffered a mental collapse from the torture and no longer recognizes people. In July and August, 2006, officials from Jiuquan Prison went to Wang Zexing's home and, in a show of hypocrisy, bought Wang Zexing's daughter a school bag and took video pictures of her. The girl was so frightened that she did not dare to speak a word. With both of her parents heavily sentenced by Yongchang Court, the girl now lives with her grandmother. She suffers from malnutrition and is noticeably shorter than her peers.

The chief of Jiuquan Prison was merciless toward Falun Gong practitioners and he told Zhang Keqin, Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee of Jiuquan City, "We will do our utmost to implement instructions in this respect (persecuting Falun Gong). In other places Falun Gong practitioners are required to write three statements, but here they have to write 'four statements'."

    People responsible for the persecution:
Chief of Jiuquan Prison, Han Quanli (overseeing the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners)
Deputy Chief of Jiuquan Prison, Ma Zhanming (charged with persecuting Falun Gong practitioners)
Deputy Chief of Jiuquan Prison, Wang Yin
Education Section of Jiuquan Prison: 86-0937-2614859

Mr. Jiang Yuejun Suffered from Persecution at the Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Jiang Yuejun was a teacher at Shulan City's Qingfeng Middle School and was arrested on June 20, 2006 for practicing Falun Gong.  Li Jiazhe from Shulan City Police Department and Li Shining from Qingfeng Township Police Station tortured Mr. Jiang for two days. The torture resulted in some broken ribs for Mr. Jiang and a perforated eardrum. Mr. Jiang was later sentenced to one year in a labor camp. Knowing his health condition, the labor camp refused to accept Mr. Jiang twice, yet the police sent Mr. Jiang to Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp in Jiutai County for the third time. That time, the labor camp accepted him against the regulations.

A member of Mr. Jiang's family had visited him and also called him several days ago. They learned that Mr. Jiang's throat was so severely damaged that he could barely speak. The sound of his voice had completely changed. Group leader Feng said, "We were quite nice to him in the first week he was here." Mr. Jiang has been imprisoned for more than two weeks. It's apparent that Mr. Jiang was subjected to severe abuse during the second week. Mr. Jiang told his family that his "environment" was very bad. He lost so much weight that he now weighs less than 100 pounds.

Group leader Feng told Mr. Jiang's family that Mr. Jiang refused to sign the five statements denouncing Falun Gong, and this affected his "work performance." When asked how his work performance was affected, Feng said it was not appropriate to talk about it over the phone. Feng told Mr. Jiang's family that if he refuses to sign the statements, they would handle him according to the "policy" (Jiang Zemin's policies of "destroy them physically, beating them to death is nothing and will be counted as suicide").

When Mr. Jiang's family told Feng that Mr. Jiang had heart disease, Feng said, "If he has heart disease, it is normal if accidents happen." Mr. Jiang said his throat was injured because of the beatings the guards gave him under orders. A guard is rewarded with a 400 yuan bonus if he "reforms" a Falun Gong practitioner. The labor camp encourages the guards to commit crimes with the enticement of financial rewards.

Exposing Crimes of Persecution in Anlu City, Hubei Province

On the morning of October 9, 2006, Anlu City State Security agents Yang Chunqiao, Mei De'an, and Chen Aiqing (all male), without showing any identification, stormed into Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Mao Cuilian's store, disrupting everything. When Ms. Mao shouted, "Robbers!" agent Mei De'an slapped Ms. Mao on the face. Ms. Mao quickly ran outside, but the driver, Chen Aiqing, stopped her and locked her in the vehicle. These agents also pushed practitioner Ms. Zhu Benming (who had come to ship merchandise) into the vehicle, causing her to suffer a black eye when she bumped into the vehicle. The agents confiscated some Falun Gong books.

Ms. Mao Cuilian and Ms. Zhu Benming were both taken to the Fucheng Police Station. Agent Chen Aiqing locked them in a metal wire cage. Ms. Mao's clothes were torn during the arrest. Later, they were both taken to the Sili Detention Center. Ms. Mao appeared to have severe stomach and heart problems, and her life was in danger. The detention center head Liu Liguang (male), and doctor He Xiaoqing (female) found one thousand yuan in Ms. Mao's pocket. They handcuffed her and sent her to the Puai Hospital to be examined. They forcibly took her back to the center, but Ms. Mao was still in extreme pain. The center's doctor, He Xiaoqing, said that Ms. Mao was faking the pain and wanted her sentenced to prison.

Because Ms. Mao's life was in danger, her mother (in her seventies) wept every day at home. Her village head went to the National Security Group to request her release. The State Security agents threatened Ms. Mao's family members and the village head and forced them to write a guarantee statement and pay for the agents' dinner in the restaurant. The village head was forced to go through unreasonable mistreatment, then he picked up Ms. Mao, who was dying, and took her home. Ms. Zhu Benming is still detained in the detention center.
