  • Remembering My Mother Wu Yuxian

    Wu Yuxian

Upon the passing of the Lantern Festival, I could no longer restrain my repressed sadness and anxiety. My mother, a Falun Gong practitioner, had passed away on February 9, 2006 due to the evil Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) persecution. Recalling my mother's life, many thoughts and feelings surfaced.

A Hard and Busy Life, and a Lucky Chance to Practice Falun Gong

My mother was enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Medicine Program at the Zhongshan Medical Science University of Guangzhou in 1956. After she graduated during the catastrophic "Cultural Revolution," she was sent to the rural villages and worked at several institutions, including the Department of Pediatric Education and Research at Guangdong Zhanjiang Medical School, the Department of Internal Medicine at Foshan Area First People's Hospital, the Yueshan Commune Health Station at Kaiping, and the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Kaiping. In 1976, as the "Cultural Revolution" came to an end, my mother was reassigned to the city of Guangzhou and worked at the Yuexiu District Chinese Medicine Miscellaneous Illnesses Hospital. She was the deputy chief of the hospital when she retired.

Everywhere my mother worked in the past, especially in the rural areas with limited medical equipment and poor conditions, when there were emergencies, my mother was always the first person actively involved in the rescue of patients in critical condition (like those with leptospirosis, extreme typhus, etc.). She helped many patients recover from critical illnesses and trained many "barefoot doctors" (doctors working in rural villages, not part of the regular government establishment), who later became regular local doctors or factory doctors. She put forth a lot of effort and was awarded the "Pioneer Worker's Award" many times.

After returning to Guangzhou and working for a while, my mother retired in early 1994 to take care my old and very ill grandmother. My grandmother was unable to get out of bed, which led to serious bedsores; her wounds were so deep that her bones were visible. After five years of my mother's care, however, my grandmother's illness was cured, which was a miracle.

Many years of hard work caused my mother's heart condition (hyperthyroidism) to surface from time to time. At the end of 1995, quite by accident, my mother went to Guangzhou Yuexiu Park and began to practice Falun Gong (Falun Dafa).
Within a very short period of time she recovered from her illness. My mother had decades of medical experience and was educated in modern science, which strengthened her belief in Falun Gong, and she believed that Falun Gong was a broad and profound science. For this reason, she established a new Falun Gong practice site at Guangzhou Sculpture Park in 1997 and volunteered as an instructor so that more people could get to know and begin practicing Falun Gong.

Steadfast in Her Belief and Repeatedly Subjected to Persecution, She Passed Away Unjustly

In 1999, Jiang Zemin and the CCP started the persecution against Falun Gong, so my mother went to Beijing to appeal in February of 2000, where she was illegally arrested and sent back to the Guangzhou Yuexiu District Detention Facility. She was confined there for 15 days.

On January 1, 2002 my mother and brother were arrested in Wuzhou, Guangxi Province because they refused to give up their belief and continued practicing Falun Gong. They were illegally sentenced to 7 and 8 years in prison, respectively. My mother was sent to Guangxi Nanning Women's Prison, and my brother was sent to Guangxi Guilin Prison. Before this happened, on December 3, 2001 my wife Zhu Luo Xin, (who was a coordinator at the Falun Gong assistant center at Guangzhou Liwan District), was illegally arrested for the same reason and sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was sent to the Guangdong Province Prison for Women, located in the suburbs of Guangzhou. I was also arrested on May 28, 2001 and sent to the Guangzhou Number 1 Prison Labor Camp for 2 years. Between January 25, 2002 and June 8, 2002 I was hung from the handcuffs on the parade grounds of the Fifth Production Group at the labor camp, and was forcibly exposed to the burning sun. My mother's younger sister, Wu Yuyun, also refused to give up her belief in Falun Gong and was persecuted to death in September of 2004.

In June of 2004, as a result of the awful conditions at the Guangxi Nanning Women's Prison and the persecution, my mother was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. Only because of this diagnosis was she allowed to leave the prison for one year on medical parole. In April of 2005, as the one-year period was drawing to a close, officials from the Guangzhou Prison for Women visited my mother on three separate occasions, and tried to force her to renounce her belief in Falun Gong; they said if she didn't they wouldn't extend her medical parole, and she would be sent back to Guangzhou Prison. My mother wouldn't give in and had to flee from home. On July 11, 2005 at about 10 a.m., National Security personnel arrested my mother in Zhengzhou. They notified the officials of the Guangzhou Prison for Women, and someone was sent on the next flight to Zhengzhou to identify my mother. She was subjected to 48 hours of continuous interrogation, and on the third day (about 8 a.m. on July 13th), my mother suddenly started hemorrhaging. Those responsible used many towels to try to stop the bleeding, but they couldn't. They finally released my mother because they were so afraid of being liable for her life. All by herself, with great difficulty, my mother endured her pain and took a train back from Zhengzhou to Guangzhou. After she got home, she had a fever for more than 20 days, and her health continued to deteriorate rapidly. Officials from the Guangzhou Prison for Women and officers of the residents' committee drew up medical parole paperwork in a hurry and transferred her relationship filing. (Note: "Relationship filing" is a personal information document required by the CCP) Temporarily assigned to the community, she was compensated with only 300 Chinese yuan a month in order to cover up their crime of persecution.

By order of the officials of the 610 Office, my mother's workplace had not paid my mother's retirement benefits for many years. With little to pay for her living expenses and medical care, my mother lived in very difficult circumstances. She suffered great bodily pain every day and died unjustly.

On the day of my mother's death, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, a family member had to go the local police station to process the death certificate. Since my mother's registration of residency was revoked illegally, officials at the Guangzhou Sanyuanli Police Station, the Guangzhou Huale Street Police Station, and the Department of Public Safety of Dongshan District each tried to push the responsibility back and forth on each other, and they all refused to process the certificate. It was midnight before the certificate was finally issued. It took nearly 10 hours and a lot of effort to get the certificate. A simple funeral was held during the next two days. The officials from the 610 Office wouldn't allow my mother's relatives to read their memorial speeches for her, so they had to quickly read their speeches outside the room instead. The funeral expenses also had to be paid by our family, and if we requested my mother's former employers to help pay, we'd have to wait for official approval.

During all these experiences, we've seen the cruelty of the persecution of Falun Gong, which was started by Jiang Zemin and the CCP. Even after my mother was persecuted to death, they still wouldn't quit, and continued to bring more pressure and cause more trouble. In addition, there are still countless families that are suffering the same kind of cruel persecution in China today. We appeal to all of the just and compassionate people of the world to pay attention to the persecution of Falun Gong in China. This persecution must end immediately.

Recalling the Past Several Years of Persecution of Changchun Practitioner Mr. Wang Hongge

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wang Hongge has been suffering from brutal persecution since November 2000 simply because he remains steadfast in Falun Gong. The mistreatment and abuse he has had to endure under the persecution include torture and forced confessions. Tiebei Detention Center police officer Liu Huibin in Changchun even stated, "I am ordering you to confess! You have to confess! I am telling you to admit guilt! You have to do it, even if you refuse. On this bench, if I say you raped your mother, you will have to admit it!"

Mr. Wang was formerly an employee of the Changchun Bus Manufacturing Plant, working in the thermal electric shop. In April 1999 he started to practice Falun Gong. Since then his mind and body has gone through many great changes. He used to be very hot-tempered and would swear and beat others easily. He was a headache for others, both at work and home. After practicing Falun Gong, his bad habits disappeared. His co-workers said that Falun Gong had changed him into a very good person.

On November 19, 2000, Mr. Wang and his wife were at a friend's home. Suddenly about six or seven police officers broke in and started to search the residence. They confiscated Falun Gong books, Teacher's portraits, and other Falun Gong materials. Mr. Wang, his wife, and three others were taken to Changchun's Beijing Road Police Station. During this whole time, nobody explained to them why the friend's residence was being searched or why they were being arrested. They were detained overnight and the next day transferred to the Changchun Police Station, where they were interrogated for a day, all in violation of the Chinese constitution. On the evening of November 20, 2000, Mr. Wang and two other practitioners were taken to Changchun's Tiebei Detention Center and illegally detained.

Mr. Wang was in the detention center for 19 months. By law, people are only supposed to be held for a maximum of 48 days. During this time, agents from the first division of Changchun City Police Department interrogated him, brutally tortured him, and then fabricated a confession on his behalf.

During this time, officials from the 1st Division at the Changchun City Police Department set up an office called a "collaborating office," made up of the police in the first team of the city police department. At 2:30 p.m. on January 18, 2001, police officers Liu Huibin and an officer nicknamed "Big Eyes" arrived to move Mr. Wang from the Tiebei Detention Center to the third floor of the office building of the first division of the city police department. Five people were there, and the person in charge was section head Yang. In the middle of the room stood the Tiger Bench. At about 3:00 p.m. they tied Mr. Wang's arms and feet to the bench. They put a metal club horizontally on his belly and locked it in place. In addition, they secured his hands behind his back with nylon ropes. His hands were tied behind his back, but the police pulled the nylon ropes forward. Liu Huibin ordered two other police officers to hold Wang's shoulders tightly downward. When Mr. Wang struggled, Liu pulled his shirt up and used a high voltage electric baton to shock his neck and back. Mr. Wang's arms were being pulled at the same time as his shoulders were being pressed down, causing tremendous pain.

Liu also threatened, "You will say what I want you to, and you will admit what I want you to. On this bench, even if I want you to admit that you raped your mother, you will have to admit it!" Mr. Wang withstood the torture for a few minutes and started to sweat. Liu ordered other evils to increase the torturing intensity. "Big Eyes" pressed Wang's arms down with great force, and Liu poured cold water on Wang's back. Then "Big Eyes" pulled the ropes tightly, and the other two pushed Mr. Wang's shoulders down, all the while shocking him with electric batons. After a while Mr. Wang lost consciousness. The hoodlums then poured cold water on him to wake him up. One of them shook his foot. By then Mr. Wang was unconscious and unable to move. Yet Liu claimed that Mr. Wang's physical condition was fine, and later they would put the ropes on Wang again.

The third time they performed this torture on Mr. Wang, Liu ordered "Big Eyes" to pull the ropes tighter, stretching Mr. Wang's arms back all the way so that his head touched his thighs. In addition, Liu ordered two other thugs to step hard on Mr. Wang's shackled foot. Mr. Wang struggled to endure the misery. A bone on his left foot fractured. The two thugs quickly left. "Big Eyes" was exhausted and his shirt was soaked with sweat. Mr. Wang fainted once again. When he regained consciousness, his head was wet from the cold water and his arms were bruised. Liu told Mr. Wang that he should be wiser so that he would not have to suffer again. Liu told Gao Peng to take notes and said, "Just write down what we drafted. After that, let him sign. Whether or not he wants to sign, we will punish him anyway." Gao Peng told Mr. Wang if he did not follow their arrangement, he would have to suffer again.

Afterwards, Liu used even more brutal physical punishment to torture Mr. Wang. He used an electric baton to shock his neck and private parts. He also ordered "Big Eyes" to poke the electric baton inside Mr. Wang's mouth and shock him. Liu repeatedly tortured Mr. Wang, trying to force him to admit the confession as the coerced confessions of the other practitioners under torure so that they could get a so-called "confession by consensus."

The two days and one night of severe torture caused Mr. Wang tremendous misery, both mentally and physically. He lay down and could not get up in the detention center for four months. Some of his ribs were broken; a bone on the left side of his left foot was fractured; a bone was twisted; his blood pressure was abnormal; he could not breathe normally; his arms and legs were black and blue; and his stomach ached almost beyond endurance. He frequently vomited. The improperly set foot fracture left him crippled, and he was in agony when he walked. The other physical injuries are still not completely healed, even now.

In the fall of 2001, the Nanguan District Court in Changchun attempted to have a trial for Mr. Wang and 13 other practitioners. Due to righteous statements from nearly 1,000 practitioners, the trial was eventually dismissed.

On March 6, 2002, the Nanguan District Court in Changchun City once again tried 13 practitioners, including Mr. Wang Hongge. On the day of the trial, the police were all over the inside and outside of the courthouse. Only one member of each practitioner's family was permitted to witness the court proceedings. The police carefully examined each one of the family members and confiscated all their belongings prior to the trial. The police also made the families go through a security check to make sure that they didn't carry anything forbidden, mainly recorders and camcorders. There were many plainclothes officers in the courtroom. The whole court proceeding was under their control.

Every practitioner had an attorney, but most of the attorneys remained silent and did not even raise a question. One lawyer said that the prosecuted had some social standing and in the past the government also permitted and supported people practicing Falun Gong. As soon as he said that, the court police immediately went over to the lawyer and silenced him.

Most of the 13 practitioners had sustained injuries. Some injuries were serious and the practitioners couldn't walk and needed assistance. It was obvious that the injuries were caused by torture. The presiding judge demanded that the practitioners answer questions standing up. Practitioner Mr. Yang Feng wasn't able to stand. The court police went over and yanked him up. His family sitting at the back said, "He can't stand, but you still make him. You are all too cruel!" As soon as the family spoke, a plainclothes officer gave the court police a signal and they immediately removed the family from the courtroom. Practitioner Yang Guang's family was ordered out for the same reason. Both family members were unconstitutionally detained for 15 days for this.

The prosecutor submitted the persecuted practitioners' so-called "confessions" into evidence. (These "confessions" had been falsified and obtained under cruel torture.) The court police would cut the practitioner off before he finished his statement. Some of the practitioners were pulled out of the courtroom. One could hear the sound of someone being beaten or electrically shocked in the corridor outside the room. One practitioner asked to withdraw from the courtroom, because he didn't want to cooperate with such a trial arrangement. He was taken from the courtroom. Thugs broke one of his legs. Two men later pulled him back into the courtroom. Severe torture went on like that in broad daylight in a place where law and order are supposed to be dispensed. The atmosphere inside and outside of the courtroom turned chaotic. To keep the news of this travesty from leaking to the public, practitioners' families were forbidden to go out during the lunch break or to make phone calls. The families were even followed and monitored when they went to the restroom.

On March 8, 2002, the court reconvened and "unlawfully sentenced" Mr. Wang Hongge to 13 years in prison. His family didn't receive any notice of the so-called "verdict," which was handed down in secret, in violation of the Chinese constitution.

In the summer of 2002, the Jilin City Prison notified Wang Hongge's family to come visit him. When his family got there, prison authorities forbade the family from going in. They made the family get a permit from the local police facility. Carrying a one-year-old baby, Wang Hongge's wife went back and forth six times to the Jilin Prison. She only saw her husband once. Later they heard that morally bankrupt individuals had forced Mr. Wang with brainwash trying to force him giving up his belief in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance." He suffered severe torture numerous times. They tried to threaten him into giving up his belief and writing the so-called Five Statements (similar to the three statements). When he left Jilin Prison, blood covered his back. His family didn't know the details of his torture and abuse.

In the spring of 2004, Mr. Wang Hongge was transferred to the Siping City Shiling Prison. Torture had ruined his health. During his family's first visit at the Shiling Prison, he talked about how the Changchun Police Department agents cruelly tortured him. He also recounted the abuse and inhuman treatment he received at the Jilin Prison. He asked his family to appeal. The head of the prison Education Section, Chen Guomin, also agreed to his decision to appeal. Yet, when the family made their next visit, Chen Guomin didn't permit Mr. Wang to tell his family about the appeal. He only permitted Mr. Wang himself to write the appeal documentation.

In July 2005, on family visiting day, Mr. Wang Hongge learned that his mother-in-law was critically ill. His wife rushed to Shiling Prison and asked if Mr. Wang Hongge could see his mother-in-law for the last time. Prison Policy Section head Li Guojun said that since Wang Hongge didn't admit his crime, parole was not possible. He also threatened Wang's family that if they continued to stay, he would call the 610 Office. Wang Hongge's wife went back to Changchun City, but her mother had died before her arrival.

On January 17, 2006, before the Chinese New Year, Mr. Wang's family heard that he had a fever. This fever continued for a month. He had problems relieving himself, chest pains, dizziness, and shortness of breath. The prison hospital examined him and said that he was fine. The family went to prison section head Li Guojun and requested treatment for Mr. Wang. Li said that the family would have to pay the medical expenses. "What prison doesn't have a few deaths every year?" he added.

To date, all of Mr. Wang's appeals are on hold on order from Yin Shoudong, head of the Fourteenth Prison Ward at the Shiling Prison. According to a prison insider, the authorities ordered all the Falun Gong appeals materials to be set aside. None of the appeals information is permitted to leave the prison, nor is it possible to deliver it to the courts.

On February 7, 2006, the family went to Shiling Prison again out of the concern for Mr. Wang's health. Li Zhiqiang wrote down their request to see him. Li lied and said that he had already reported to his superiors that Mr. Wang's appeal documents were being withheld. He also falsely stated that Mr. Wang's health was good. Li was accompanied by prison hospital director Jiang Xinguo, and the two deceived the family together.

In addition, the family requested the prison to no longer hold up Mr. Wang's appeals documentation. The section head, Mr. Sun, said that he could only "report it to his superiors." The family had raised the same request with Li Zhiqiang on February 7, but there was no result. The family then became more worried about Wang Hongge's health.

On February 21, Mr. Wang's family once again went to Shiling Prison. They said that they suspected that he didn't eat because he had trouble relieving himself, and that might be the reason he had become skinny. Section head Sun replied that Wang Hongge was not on a hunger strike. He ate instant noodles and also drank water. If any prisoner intended to get out by hurting himself or by a hunger strike, it would not work. "We are not afraid of hunger strikes. We have ways to deal with it." When the family asked to see Mr. Wang, the prison authorities refused them because it wasn't visiting day.

Later, when Wang Hongge's mother called Shiling Hospital, hospital director Jiang Guoxin sowed dissension and didn't want to be responsible, so he claimed that it was Wang Hongge's wife who told Wang to undertake a hunger strike.

We wish for everyone to condemn the persecution, so that we can put a stop to it together.

The Evil Concentration Camps Have Existed for a Long Time

On January 1, 2001, practitioner Xiaoyun (alias) was arrested in Tiananmen Square when validating Falun Gong. Policemen used all their might, but they still could not force her to speak her name. At around 3 a.m. the next morning, all of the arrested practitioners were suddenly gathered together and pushed onto a huge bus. Policemen on the bus said something strange: "We are sending you to two places. One of them is the Masanjia Labor Camp. If you still won't 'reform', we will send you somewhere else."

It was a very snowy day. The bus drove until 6 p.m. There was a long line of huge buses on the road, so long that you could not see the end. The police on the bus said there were about 60 buses, and each carried more than 40 practitioners. They said they had been working too hard lately and were very tired.

Upon reaching a certain location, a very formal procedure was undertaken. Police officers from two departments stood along the two sides of the road. Ever since then, many Falun Gong practitioners have been missing.

The Baokang Town Police Station Detention Center in Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia Persecutes Practitioners

In November 2005, the police from Baokang Town Police Station in Baokang Town, Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia, arrested Ms. Li Guizhi and several other Falun Gong practitioners. They brutally persecuted and extorted money from them.

On November 15, 2005, a fellow practitioner named Ms. Gao Wa went to Ms. Li Guizhi's home, but she didn't know that a policewoman named Bai Yuhua was following her. Bai searched Ms. Li's home and found Falun Gong truth-clarification materials, so she called for backup. Ms. Gao escaped from the scene because of Ms. Li's cover. After the police backup came, they attempted to arrest Ms. Li Guizhi. When she refused to leave with them, the police carried her to the police car by force, even though she didn't even have her shoes on. She was barefoot for a few hours, standing on the cold concrete floor at the detention center in the middle of winter. Next the police drove to the homes of Ms. Zhang Shujie and Ms. Qu Yuling. The police ransacked their homes and arrested both practitioners. The police smashed Ms. Qu Yuling's front door and confiscated her computer, printer, and truth-clarification materials. The police even took Ms. Qu and Ms. Zhang's house keys and still have not returned them. After the police made the arrest, they stole two bank deposit certificates, her ID, a small axe, and a small digital radio from Ms. Qu's home. At the time Ms. Qu Yuling and her husband had just moved into their new home, so they couldn't tell exactly how many more things the police had stolen.

The police didn't even notify their families to bring their personal belongings after they illegally arrested Ms. Li Guizhi, Ms. Qu Yuling, and Ms. Zhang Shujie. Policewoman Bai Yuhua announced, "If you refuse to cooperate with me, I will make your life a living hell." She ordered wardens Ms. Chen Xiaolan and Ms. Shan Daixiao to give the three practitioners a cold shower in the middle of winter in Mongolia. Ms. Li Guizhi couldn't stand it and shouted for help. About a dozen female prison inmates witnessed the torture. Even people in the men's quarter heard Ms. Li's call for help. Before she practiced Falun Gong, Ms. Qu Yuling suffered from severe kidney disease and was close to being blind. Because of the cold shower treatment in the middle of winter, her kidney disease surfaced again. She lost the ability to walk and became nearly blind. When she was released, she had convulsions and was dying. The police extorted 2,000 yuan from her family at the time of release even though they had nearly killed her. After she returned home, Ms. Qu suffered from insomnia and remained extremely thin. When her family visited her in the hospital, she could identify their voices but was unable to recognize their faces. She has to depend on other people's care completely.

Ms. Li Guizhi and Ms. Zhang Shujie went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. The police then started to torture them both with force-feeding. Ms. Li Guizhi was subjected to force-feeding twice. The second time she lost the ability to talk and had such a high fever that she madly grabbed hold of the cold metal bed. Despite her condition, the police left the feeding tube inserted in her throat. It was not until the eighth day of her hunger strike that the police removed the feeding tube after she stopped the hunger strike protest because of her family's request. As for Ms. Zhang Shujie, the police left the feeding tube in her throat for five days until she had a heart attack. When she was sent to the hospital for emergency resuscitation, her heartbeat went up to 130 times per minute. When she was dying, the police lied to Ms. Zhang Shujie, promising to return her copy of Zhuan Falun to her and give her the freedom to practice Falun Gong and to read Falun Gong books in order to make her stop the hunger strike protest. In addition, the police took turns interrogating her. They promised to release her in a month if she would sell out her fellow practitioners, but the truth is that the police had already sentenced her to serve time in the forced labor camp by then. Because of her alarming health condition, the forced labor camp refused to take Ms. Qu Yuling. Since the police were unable to have her admitted to the forced labor camp, policeman Wang Chunling then extorted 2,000 yuan from her family without giving any receipt, telling them that he had gone to Tongliao City to apply for bail for Ms. Qu. Her family paid the extortion in order to save her life.

Exposing the Ministry of Public Security's Entry/Exit Department, Which Persecutes Falun Gong Practitioners

On the web recently, some Falun Gong practitioners have discussed the difficulties of obtaining their passports. This problem is universal. For example, there are many practitioners near me who have come across this difficulty. During the process of applying for a passport, they learned that every county and district's Ministry of Public Security has an Entry/Exit Country Control Section. They process Falun Gong practitioners' applications within their territories. They note that this individual practices Falun Gong and cannot exit the country (this includes Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan).

This goes with the individual's personal identification number. According to China's household registry policy, this number will never change throughout one's life, regardless of whether there is a name or address change. To apply for a passport, one has to go to the city Ministry of Public Security Entry/Exit Country Control Office. The personnel at the widow would right away see this restriction after entering the individual's personal identification number and the application would then be refused.

This restriction has a valid date of expiration-one or two years-which gives one the false impression that it is short term. In fact, related personnel explain that toward the end of the valid time, one has to obtain a written repeal from his local Entry/Exit Country Control Section to change this document; otherwise, it will automatically extend until the next valid date, in effect making it an indefinite restriction. Related personnel call this system a national form, a nationwide web including customs, border control, etc., which prohibits Falun Gong practitioners from exiting the country. Practitioners have been to local Entry/Exit Country Control Sections and asked whether there are related documents. Officials admit that there are, but practitioners are not allowed to see them. Practitioners have asked if those documents can be removed and personnel have told them they have to seek approval from their local 610 Office.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhan Shuying from Weihai City, Shandong Province, has lived alone since her retirement. Her son lives in the United States and had intended for his mother to join him, however, Entry/Exit Control would not issue her a passport. Zhan Shuying went to appeal her case, but was instead illegally sentenced to forced labor camp in 2004.

The ones who apply for a passport include the elderly who want to visit children, students who want to study abroad, young people who want to get married, spouses who want to reunite, businessmen who want to negotiate deals, etc. Regardless of the reason, Falun Gong practitioners are not allowed to leave the country. There are even some individuals who use this opportunity to trick and coerce practitioners into writing a guarantee statement. But this is only an underhanded trick. In fact, even if a practitioner signs this statement, he or she will still be forbidden to leave the country.

My passport application has been repeatedly denied

In 1999, at the beginning of the persecution, my friends knew that I was in the process of applying for study abroad. They tried to convince me to apply for a passport early, but I did not do so at that time, as I still had hope for and delusion about the central government: We are only practicing meditation, how can a government harm their good hearted civilians?

In 2000, although I received the acceptance letter from Goldsmith College in London, England, my passport application was rejected by the local Entry/Exit Country Control Department, their only reason being that I was "practicing Falun Gong." I demanded a formal document to refer to for the future, but they would not give me one. I asked them whether their act is based on any legislation. They said that Falun Gong practitioners who go overseas would damage our country's reputation. In other words, they are afraid that their irrational persecution will be known internationally.

In 2001, I received an acceptance letter from Oxford University, England. My passport application, however, was rejected again and I was notified that I could not appeal.

In 2005, my fiancé, who was in Canada, and I wanted to get married, but my passport was still rejected.

My employer is an international trade company, so a lot of foreign travel is needed. Since I practice Falun Gong, I have not had a passport for work or personal use, and my work has suffered greatly.

For the past seven years that I have not had a passport. I have not been able to complete my studies or get married, and my work has suffered very much. Needless to say, I have been persecuted.

Four Practitioners from Luzhou City, Sichuan Province Face Illegal Trial for a Second Time

Falun Gong practitioners Liang Jinghui, Hu Jingbin, He Shifang, and Jiang Jiyun from the Naxi area, Luzhou City, Sichuan Province have been illegally imprisoned for eight months. It is reported that they were scheduled to be placed on trial a second time at Luzhou Naxi Regional Court at 9 a.m. on March 6, 2006.

It is reported that the above practitioners were imprisoned because they distributed the Nine Commentaries and asked people to quit the CCP. At one point, the Sichuan Province National Security Department stepped in and forced the local court to postpone the trial so that they could fabricate evidence about overseas involvement in the so-called "crimes" so as to aggravate the persecution.

Song Xu Persecuted in Henan Province Xinmi Prison

Falun Gong practitioner Song Xu from Zhengzhou was illegally arrested and sentenced in November 2002 to a jail term to be served at the Henan Province Xinmi Prison. In prison he is suffering from continuous brutal persecution, both mentally and physically, including force-feedings and merciless beatings by inmates instigated by the guards. Clearwisdom.net has published several reports about this in the past.

About six months ago, a prison guard locked Song Xu alone in a dark room with no windows and only one air vent. In the total darkness, guards took turns attempting to brainwash him. He was completely isolated otherwise. Song Xu clarified the truth to them and pointed out their crimes. The prison guards realized it was hopeless to "reform" Song Xu, so they spread the following rumor: "Song Xu is very stubborn. We worry that if this continues, he will have mental problems and commit suicide."

Song Xu explicitly told every person he met that if he had an accident, it would not be suicide but a murder. The prison guards could not do anything with Song Xu, so they turned to Song Xu's parents and threatened them by saying, "Song Xu is so stubborn. If we have no way to reform him, according to the law we can increase the penalty for his crime of subversion, and we already have precedents here." Song Xu's parents were very worried and became mentally unstable. His mother once fainted while shopping.

Ms. Wang Xiulian Suffers a Mental Breakdown Due to Torture in Zhangjiakou City Brainwashing Center

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Wang Xiulian from Huai'an County, Hebei Province has been tortured to the point of mental breakdown at the Zhangjiakou City Brainwashing Center in Yangtai Village.

Ms. Wang Xiulian is 59 years old and lives in a village in Zuiwei Town, Huai'an County, Hebei Province. After started practicing Falun Gong, her illnesses have all disappeared. This experience of hers led her faith in the practice to be rock solid. When the persecution began, she would not give up practicing Truthfulness, Benevolence, Forbearance, and was therefore locked up in Gaoyang Labor Camp. In September 2004 she was sent to the Zhangjaikou Brainwashing Center, located in Yangtai Village. Besides forcing her to watch videos every day that were filled with lies, guards Zhang Youai, Yang, Liang, and Hou abused her continuously. They would not give her anything to eat, and punched and kicked her.

In one incident, Yang, the CCP Zuowei Town Official, cursed Ms. Wang Xiulian. Ms. Wang tried to avoid the onslaught by going to the laundry room to do laundry, but Yang chased her to the laundry room. Yang proceeded to beat Ms. Wang so hard that her head hit the edge of the sink, causing the left side of her face to swell and bruise. Guards He Chuni (female, from Zhangjiapu Village, Zhangjiapu Town, Zhuolu County) and Shi Jing (female), etc. made fun of her injured face.

Ms. Wang Xiulian was already quite thin from the torture and inhumanity she endured, but Wang Haiying (female, another CCP Zuowei Town Official), still failed to give food to Ms. Wang Xiulian if "she did not feel like it," forcing her to starve. One morning Ms. Wang Xiulian shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" Guard Hou beat her viciously, while cursing at her.

Due to the long-term mental and physical damage, Ms. Wang Xiulian is now suffering from a mental breakdown. She often talks to herself, crying and laughing, wears yarn or bathroom tissue in her hair, and so on. She was so healthy before the persecution, and followed Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance, but now her situation is tragic and pitiful.
