  • How Did Mr. Wang Xiaodong Lose His Ability to Speak?

On March 11, 2006, Wang Xiaodong, a 39-year-old practitioner from Huadian City in Jilin Province, was illegally arrested again by several policeman led by Yu Jinji and Jin Zhexian. They illegally searched his home. Wang Xiaodong’s mother went to the Huadian City 610 Office and the local court many times, requesting to see her son. The authorities ignored her requests and threatened her instead. On July 6, she waited 6 hours before finally seeing her son, who was handcuffed in an iron cage. Wang Xiaodong’s head was drooped and he didn’t respond to his mother’s voice, as if he couldn’t hear her.

The head of the National Security Group of Huadian City Police Department, Yu Jinji and Yang Baolin, of the Huadian City 610 Office are fabricating charges for sentencing Wang Xiaodong. On July 4, the local court judge in charge of Wang Xiaodong’s case, Liu Fengtong told Wang Xiaodong’s mother that his case will be heard soon and his family should come to the courthouse for the case hearing. After Mr. Wang’s family members arrived at the courthouse, Liu Fengtong told them the hearing would not be held that day and he would notify them about the new hearing date. On July 5, Wang’ Xiaodong's mother again asked at the courthouse about her son’s hearing and nobody answered her inquiry.

At around 8:00 a.m. on July 6, 2006, Wang Xiaodong’s mother went to the courthouse again. She ran into Judge Liu Fengtong and a female staff person while waiting in the hallway. She asked Judge Liu Fengtong, "When will Wang Xiaodong’s case be heard?" Judge Liu Fengtong said, "I’ll let you know when it’s the time." The female staff person said, "Go home. Today’s case has nothing to do with you. The judge is in the middle of a case hearing." Mr. Wang’s mother asked Judge Liu Fengtong again, "Please let me know when Wang Xiaodong’s case will be heard." Liu Fengtong said, "Just wait over there. I’ll tell you in a little while."

Mr. Wang’s mother waited until 11:10 a.m. before asking the guard to call Judge Liu Fengtong’s office. The guard got no answer. He said: "They’re not done yet (i.e., the case hearing has not ended yet.)" Mr. Wang's mother had to leave.

Around 2:00 p.m., Wang Xiaodong's mother returned to the courthouse and asked the guard to call again. There was still no answer. The guard said, "They haven’t finished the hearing yet." She had to wait.

Around 3:00 p.m., Mr. Wang's mother saw people from the police department and the 610 Office coming in and out of the courthouse. They all stared at her. She felt that something was wrong.

Shortly afterwards, a staff person from the courthouse came out and said, "You haven’t seen your son for several months. We’ll give you a chance to see him." She followed him and saw Judge Liu Fengtong, the Deputy Court Director Zhang Fuhong, Yang Baolin from the 610 Office, a doctor from the detention center with a medical kit on his back, local Procuratorate Wei Junying and a dozen others. Then she saw her son. Wang Xiao Dong was in an iron cage, wearing handcuffs and shackles. His head was hanging low and he did not speak at all.

She immediately said, "What crime did my son commit? Why did you put handcuffs and shackles on him? What crime is it to practice Falun Gong? Falun Gong practitioners don’t fight back when punched or insulted. They try to be nice people by following the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. Are we afraid there might be too many kind people in the world?" She asked her son, "Why don't you speak? They tortured you. Why don't you say something? You should expose how they arrested and tortured you."

No matter how hard his mother tried, Wang Xiaodong didn’t respond at all. His head continued to droop. It was as if he didn’t hear his mother.

Several people (possibly from the 610 Office) saw that Wang Xiaodong’s mother kept questioning the staff members of the courthouse. They pulled Mr. Wang out of the cage.

He didn’t speak a word during the whole time. His head hung low. His hair was long and covered his face. Several people then pushed his mother out of the courthouse. In a short while, Wei Junying from the local Procuratorate came out of the courthouse. He gave Wang Xiaodong’s mother a cruel smile, jumped into his car and left.

After a while, Yang Baolin from the 610 Office came out. He worked with Yu Jinji, head of the National Security Group of Huadian City Police Department, fabricating charges against Wang Xiaodong. Mr. Wang’s mother said to him, "Why are you so cruel? You’re all bad people. To sentence Wang Xiaodong, is to sentence yourselves. How come my son couldn’t speak when I talked to him? Look at the horrible deeds you’ve done." Yang Baolin’s face turned red and he left in his car.

Wang Xiaodong’s mother said to more than 20 onlookers from the courthouse, "Wang Xiaodong used to be sick and spitting blood. After he practiced Falun Gong, he recovered. Is that a crime? What’s wrong with being a good person and following the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance? What these people did to my son is shameful." None of the people said anything and went back into the courthouse.

Around 8:00 a.m. on July 7, Wang Xiaodong’s mother and her niece (Wang Xiaodong’s cousin) went to the courthouse to look for Judge Liu Fengtong. The guard called his office and was told that he was not in. They found Deputy Director Zhang Fuhong of the courthouse.

Wang Xiaodong’s cousin said, "Wang Xiaodong is my cousin. He was beaten so much that he didn’t even recognize his mother. He practiced Falun Gong and followed the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance and tried to be a good person. What’s wrong with that?" Deputy Director Zhang Fuhong said, "You think it’s good to practice Falun Gong. We don’t allow it. His sentence is not set yet. We can have more discussions." She said, "Why didn’t you allow his family members into the courtroom when his case was heard? My aunt didn’t tell me. The court didn’t notify her. If I were here yesterday, wouldn’t you allow me to come in?" Zhang Fuhong said, "They injured Wang Xiaodong. You can go to the Procuratorate to sue them."

After 9:00 a.m., Wang Xiaodong’s mother and cousin went to the local Procuratorate. They didn’t find anybody there and had to go home.

The Persecution Experienced by Practitioner Wang Xiaolun from Xiong County, Hebei Province

On June 7, 2006, officer Wang Shiyong and three others from the Gaoqiao Police Station in Baigou Town illegally arrested five Falun Gong practitioners in Baigou Town. One of the practitioners is Wang Xiaolun from Xiong County. The following is an account of the persecution suffered by Wang Xiaolun.

On the day Wang Xiaolun and the four other practitioners were arrested and taken to the Gaoqiao Police Station, Police Chief Wang Shiyong slapped Wang Xiaolun for refusing to give his name and address. Wang Xiaolun was handcuffed to a chair that night and denied food.

The next day, the five practitioners were sent to Gaobeidian Police Department. Four of the practitioners were handcuffed together and forced to use the lavatory together. An officer from the Gaoqiao Police Station struck Wang Xiaolun’s face with a water bottle. Mr. Wang then went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. The practitioners were detained there for half a day before being sent to the Gaobeidian Detention Center.

After about four days of a hunger strike, Wang Xiaolun was taken to a railroad hospital and forced to have an intravenous injection. A doctor from the detention center with the surname Sun used a handcuff to press down on Mr. Wang’s ankle and stuck a large needle into his arm. Two weeks into his hunger strike, Sun stomped on Mr. Wang’s chest forcefully. Detention Center Director Xu Zhong ordered someone to monitor Mr. Wang and whip him if he still refused to eat. Another director named Liu said that if Wang Xiaolun wouldn’t eat, the guards would feed him with human excrement.

On July 6, 2006, Wang Xiaolun and another practitioner named Zhang Shiyi were taken to Gaobeidian City Hospital to have physical checkups, blood tests and a liver function test. Mr. Wang asked for the purpose of performing all the tests. The director told him that it was to see if the practitioners had infectious diseases. Zhang Shiyi’s test results showed that he had high blood pressure, and the director then forced him to take drugs.

On July 7, Zhao (first name unknown) from Gaobeidian National Security unit sent Wang Xiaolun to the Baoding Forced Labor Camp. Mr. Wang was unconscious at that time because his cervical vertebra and lumbar vertebra were broken. The forced labor camp refused to take these practitioners. The practitioners were immediately taken back to Gaobeidian Police Department. The police department informed Xiong County and Baigou Town National Security Team. The officers from Baigou and members of Zhang Shiyi’s family took Mr. Zhang home at about 3:00 p.m. However, police from Xiong County didn’t arrive to pick up Wang Xiaolun and didn’t tell Mr. Wang’s family about the release. At the time, Mr. Wang was suffering severe physical pain and asked for a medical exam. Gaobeidian Police Department told him that someone from Xiong County would pick him up soon and refused him a physical examination. Wang Xiaolun waited until night and no one came. He waited in the Bureau for an afternoon and was sent back to the Gaobeidian Detention Center in the evening.

In the detention center, Mr. Wang asked for a physical exam again and Director Wang Zhenzeng told him, "Eat your meal now. Monday (July 10) we will have an officer from Xiong County bring your family to pick you up."

On July 9, Wang Xiaolun’s family learned that he was still in the Gaobeidian Detention Center and went there to ask for him. Director Wang Zhenzeng told the family that he had received an order that even if Wang Xiaolun died, he wouldn’t be held responsible. After the family begged repeatedly, the director promised the family that he would send Mr. Wang back to Xiong County. However, Su Shiliang from Xiong County National Security Group had no plans to release Wang Xiaolun.

On the morning of July 10, Zhao from the Gaobeidian National Security Group lied to Wang Xiaolun in order to get him into a car and lied to Mr. Wang’s family, telling them to wait at  Xiong County Police Department. Zhao, Su Shiliang, Cui Qihua, and Li Chengchun took Wang Xiaolun to the Baoding Forced Labor Camp. The guards at the Baoding Forced Labor Camp, in order to make Mr. Wang talk, beat him about the eyes and mouth until he was bleeding. The guards then left Mr. Wang under the burning sun. Wang demanded a physical checkup again because he felt he might have a bone fracture in his neck. At 3:00 p.m., the camp staff took Wang Xiaolun to the 252nd Hospital to have a physical exam. The examiners found that he had fractures in his neck and lower back, bleeding in the brain and paralysis in his lower body.

When Su Shiliang and other officials learned about Mr. Wang’s injuries, Su Shiliang brought the camp staff a case of bottled water and escaped back to Xiong County. The staff didn’t tell Mr. Wang’s family about his injuries. The camp staff, on their way from the hospital back to the camp, decided that they wouldn’t take Mr. Wang in. They didn’t want the responsibility and forced Wang Xiaolun to sign a statement saying that all his injuries and illnesses had nothing to do with the camp.

Wang Xiaolun was later locked in the Baoding Forced Labor Camp for a day. On the afternoon of July 11, the director of the camp ordered the staff to send Mr. Wang back to the police. The camp staff then threw Mr. Wang, who was severely injured, into the yard of Gaobeidian Police Department while no one was around and left.

After someone found Mr. Wang, Zhao from the Gaobeidian National Security Group informed his family to pick him up. By that time, Mr. Wang had endured five days without treatment for his injuries. Usually, patients with a bone fracture shouldn’t be moved around as much as Wang Xiaolun was. However, Mr. Wang was frequently and carelessly moved around during these five days. During that time, his injuries were not allowed to heal and, consequently, they worsened. Mr. Wang’s family went to the Gaobeidian National Security Group and demanded justice. Zhao told them, "I took orders from the higher level. Why don’t you go and ask my boss?" Mr. Wang’s family plans to ask for the return of lost possessions and compensation for pain and suffering.

Deng Yufang in Her 60s Suffered Intense Persecution in Nanmusi Women's Forced Labor Camp Before Her Death

Ms. Deng Yufang was around 60 years old. She was reported to police by someone while she was distributing truth-clarifying materials. Later, she was sent to Renhe Police Station in Panzhihua City and then to the Wanyaoshu Detention Center. Once, she was found to be doing the exercises in the cell and was beaten by the police.

After being detained in the detention center for over one month, Deng Yufang was sent to the Nanmusi Women's Forced Labor Camp in Zizhong, Sichuan Province. She was detained there for over one-and-a-half years. After the police from the Renhe Police Station sent Ms. Deng to the Nanmusi Forced Labor Camp, she was severely tortured for nearly a month by the 5th Squadron and then transferred to the 8th Squadron which specialized in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. At that time, the team leader was Li Qi. Ms. Deng and over one hundred other Falun Gong practitioners were brutally tortured in the 8th Squadron.

After January 1, 2004, the practitioners and other detainees at the forced labor camp were forced to perform intense physical labor. At that time, most of the practitioners detained there were middle-aged or older. They were ordered to pick flowers and sew woven materials (for export products). Their older age and this being a new skill for most of them resulted in their not doing well. Those who could not accomplish the assigned tasks fast enough were punished by being made to stand for long periods of time or were deprived of sleep.

The forced labor camp increased the intensity of the production task to a higher level, to make the practitioners sweat and toil more, and the ones who did not accomplish the goals were punished. Some of the elderly Falun Gong practitioners who did not have good eyesight, and those who were unable to work efficiently were relegated to a separate group called the "Miscellaneous Squad," which was made up of nine people. The oldest among them was about 72 years old. Deng Yufang was put in this "Miscellaneous Squad."

The major tasks for the Miscellaneous Squad were to carry the food and water for the three meals daily for over one hundred people, and clean the yard, the toilet, etc. Reeling under both physical and mental torture, Deng Yufang became sick in March 2004. Her whole body became swollen, she developed a big lump in her stomach and she could not pass urine. She was unable to eat anything once she was sent to the forced labor camp. Under such harsh conditions, Ms. Deng was forced into long hours of harsh labor. Each day, the work hours were as much as 17 to 18 hours.

The police blocked the news of Deng Yufang's illness from her family. Their only contact with her family was to coerce them to keep sending money to the forced labor camp. The clinic at the forced labor camp injected some unknown medicine into Ms. Deng's body. Her situation remained serious, then became critical. To evade responsibility for Deng Yufang's condition, the forced labor camp sent her to another hospital outside of the forced labor camp for an examination but would not inform her of the results. Despite this situation, Squadron Leader Li Qi told her "Don't think that we will let you go home. We know you are pretending to be ill."

Deng Yufang's critical condition was grounds for her release on bail for medical treatment. However, she was deprived of all such rights and had to suffer inhumane persecution in the forced labor camp. Immediately prior to the expiration of her term, Ms. Deng was sent to an isolated cell and was only allowed to sleep for two hours. The forced labor camp ordered drug addicts to torture her.

Deng Yufang's body was swollen after her release from the forced labor camp and she could not eat anything. Every now and then, some perpetrator would go to her home and harass her. As a result of the Chinese Communist Party's barbaric persecution, Deng Yufang passed away in June 2006.

Brutal Torture in the Sichuan Provincial Women's Labor Camp

Since 1999, Falun Gong practitioners have been detained and persecuted in the Sichuan Provincial Women's Labor Camp. Team leaders Zhang Xiaofang and Li Qi have tortured practitioners physically and abuse them mentally, and they directed other inmates to torture practitioners. The inmates were given the incentive of having their terms reduced by 20 days if they were able to force five practitioners to give up their beliefs. Criminal inmates were put in charge of practitioners and used various means of torture. Their methods included brainwashing, physical torture, sleep deprivation, loss of bathroom privileges, working long hours (18 to 20 hours daily), hanging practitioners up in unnatural positions, tying them up with rope, force-feeding them with saltwater solutions, forcing them to drink their urine, putting human excrement under their pillows, pinching their nipples, stabbing their genitals and forcing them to sleep on wet bedding.

Some practitioners were tortured until they experienced a mental breakdown. Others suffered physical harm because they were not allowed to use the toilet for 24-hour periods, and some were hospitalized due to the abuse, having to spend 3,000 to 7,000 yuan for medical expenses. Ye Peiqi, a practitioner from Leshan City, could not endure the torture and tried to escape. She was caught and dozens of inmates beat her from head to toe with metal clothes hangers. Her whole body was covered with cuts and bruises.

Practitioner Yang Shaopei refused to defame Falun Gong and was physically tortured over the course of the year. Her body was constantly covered with bruises. Once they covered her head with a toilet bowl, wrapped her body with a quilt soaked with urine and excrement, and locked her in the restroom for half a day.

Practitioner Tong Guiqi was tortured so severely that she had a mental collapse. She screamed constantly.

Practitioner Lu Yanfei refused to give up her beliefs and protested the inhuman treatment by refusing to do forced labor. One of the criminal inmates from Ziyang City, Ling Yan, took charge of her for nearly a year. Ling beat her more than ten times, cut off all her hair, tore off her clothes and tortured her while she was naked. Ms. Lu protested by going on a hunger strike several times.

Ms. Lu did not give in and and kept exposing the persecution in the labor camp. She was beaten by over 50 people at least five times in retaliation. Once, team leader Li Qi punched and kicked Ms. Lu in front of seven other inmates, which caused Ms. Lu's nose to bleed. Li told Ling to take off all of Ms. Lu's clothes and to force her into an extremely uncomfortable position by hanging her up. They put an irritant into her eyes, poured cold water on her head and put hot pepper on her wounds. In this manner, they continued to torture her throughout the night. Li was later promoted. When Ms. Lu filed a lawsuit against Li, Li apologized to her. The judge indicated that Li would be punished. This caused the persecution in the labor camp to be somewhat less severe, although the camp personnel still tried to force practitioners to give up their belief through various means.

The Persecution of Ms. Yuan Yuqin

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Yuan Yuqin is from Longkou City, Shandong Province. Because she persists in practicing Falun Gong, she has been illegally detained over a dozen times and her home ransacked many times. She has been fined, harassed, and brutally tortured. Eventually she lost her job.

Ms. Yuan Yuqin, over 40 years old, lives in Beizaoqian Village in the Kaifa District of Longkou City. After the persecution started, in March 2000, Ms. Yuan went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong with Ms. Zhang Shumin, another practitioner from the same village. They were detained and taken to the local liaison office. The local police department and a village official, Cui Jichuan, took them back home. (Cui, who used to help police search the homes of practitioners and verbally abused them, reportedly now has a brain tumor.) When Ms. Yuan was brought back, she was locked to a pole in the courtyard of the village administration office.

Around 10:00 p.m., Team Secretary Jie Dejiu, who was drunk, and village security chief Feng Jun, together with four or five thugs, showed up with electric batons. Jie started cursing the practitioners. He told the others to strip off the practitioners’ jackets, shoes and socks so that they were standing on the cold floor in their bare feet. Then Jie walked up to Ms. Yuan, punched her in the face, and said, "That’s for causing trouble for me."

Then the scoundrels closed in on the two practitioners and viciously beat them. They used the electric baton to shock their bare feet. Jie took a bottle of alcohol and tried to force Ms. Yuan to drink. Because she refused, Jie told others to strip off her pants. As she resisted Jie kicked her in the face and she collapsed to the ground. Jie then poured half a bottle of alcohol into her. After the beating and torment, Ms. Yuan’s face was swollen, with blood dripping from her mouth and ears. She was in excruciating pain.

After that, they did the same thing to Ms. Zhang Shumin. Ms. Zhang’s tooth was knocked out, and her feet became swollen. They then started to torture the practitioners who were detained in the village offices, Mr. Tang Zhulong and his wife Ms. Jie Yulan.

Jie Dejiu told the others to bring human waste from the toilet and force practitioners to drink it. When they refused, they were beaten. The practitioners were tortured until midnight. When Jie left, he ordered, "Do not let them inside, do not let them put on clothes, socks, or shoes. Let them freeze in the yard. Let me tell you, I will come every night to check." The next evening, the thugs again beat the practitioners in the hallway. They hung Ms. Zhang to a fence and beat her. They even drove her to a beach and threatened to bury her alive. Ms. Yuan and Ms. Zhang were beaten until they said they would not practice Falun Gong anymore.

In June 2001, Ms. Yuan was illegally arrested from her workplace and taken to Zhangjiagou Detention Center and detained for a month. The instigator of the persecution in Longkou City Police Department is Li Shuqiang. Among the police involved in the actual persecution were Yu Lihui and Wang Jun.

Near the close of 2001, Ms. Yuan went to visit another practitioner. She was again arrested and taken to Zhangjiagou Detention Center by Yu Lihui and others. As a result, the elders and young children left at home had no one to care for them. After the Lantern Festival, the authorities extorted 5,000 yuan from Yuan Yuqin's family before releasing her.

The Persecution of Illegally Detained Falun Gong Practitioners from Tieli City

Falun Gong practitioners Liu Hongtu, Ms. Lu Mei, Ms. Tong Yuxia, Sun Yuemin, Zhu Hui, Liang Bin, Cheng Peifeng, Zhou Shuhai, and Zhou Shuzhang were illegally arrested and locked up in the Tieli City No. 1 Detention Center by members of the 610 Office and the police department between September 26 and October 29, 2005. Another Falun Gong practitioner, Chai Shusen from Tieli City, was arrested in early November 2005. Several days later, he was sentenced to forced labor and sent to the Suihua Forced Labor Camp to be persecuted.

The ten practitioners were sentenced at the Tieli City Court in February 2006. The court rejected the practitioners’ appeals and upheld the original sentences. Zhou Shuzhang, Zhou Shuhai, Liu Hongtu and Sun Yuemin were sent to the Grill Ward of Hulan Prison to be persecuted on June 1, 2006. They were transferred to Daqing Prison on June 30. Ms. Lu Mei was sent to Harbin Women’s Prison on June 1. The other five practitioners remained locked up in Tieli City Detention Center due to different reasons.

Mr. Zhou Shuzhang is 42 years old. He was a laid-off worker from the lumberyard of Tieli Forestry Bureau. After he was arrested on October 29, 2005, he was subjected to "angled hanging" (while seated, a practitioner’s forearms are tied together behind the back of a chair, the practitioner’s legs are stretched out and tied up, while guards kick the practitioner), "tying the ropes" and other tortures.

Mr. Liu Hongtu, 38 years old, was a taxi driver. He was arrested on September 26, 2005. He was subjected to "angled hanging" and "tying the ropes." He underwent a hunger strike to protest the persecution but was further tortured with brutal force-feeding.

Mr. Zhou Shuhai, 34 years old, was formerly a researcher from the Yichun City Government Research Center. He was arrested on October 29, 2005 and suffered the "angled hanging" and "tying the ropes" tortures.

Mr. Sun Yuemin, 31 years old, was a worker from a wood products factory in Tieli. He was arrested from his home on October 1, 2005. He suffered from "angled hanging," "tying the ropes" and other forms of torture. In the detention center, upon refusing to wear the prison uniform, he was slapped by a police officer.

These four practitioners were sent to the Grill Ward of Hulan Prison on June 1, 2006. On June 4, the Criminal Team head Wang Dengming (a criminal inmate) asked if Liu Hongtu had written the so-called "Four Statements" (similar to the three statements). Mr. Liu answered, "No." Wang then verbally abused him and punched him in the face. Then another team head Zheng Taiping (also a criminal) ordered Zhou Shuzhang to get out of the line, and asked him the same question. When Mr. Zhou answered the same way as Mr. Liu did, Zheng struck him in the back of the neck several times. Zheng then threatened Mr. Zhou to "think it over."

On the evening of June 4, when the prisoners were sitting on the cement floor in the cell, Wang Dengming asked Zhou Shuhai if he had written the "Four Statements" yet. Mr. Zhou said no. Wang then started to physically abuse him and used the "little white dragon" (a white, hard plastic tube) and lashed him on the back three times. Then he ordered Liu Hongtu to go out of the cell and lashed him with the plastic tube about seven times. Wang threatened, "This is just the start. If you don’t write the statements, I will treat you this way every day." Under such huge physical and mental pressure, Liu Hongtu wrote the "Four Statement" against his will.

Starting on June 5, Zheng Taiping forced Zhou Shuzhang and Zhou Shuhai to stand facing the wall all the time except during meal times and when they had to go to the bathroom. He arranged criminals to monitor them closely. They were prohibited from talking and moving and were often forced to stand until 11:00 p.m. He also threatened to make them stand the whole night, with the intention of breaking them down mentally. Their forced standing during the night ended 15 days later with the help of some inmates who had a sense of justice.

When Zhou Shuzhang and Zhou Shuhai were standing facing the wall in the cell on the evening of June 5, Zheng Taiping called Zhou Shuhai to his bed. He first told him that he needed points to be commuted and that if Mr. Zhou didn’t give up Falun Gong, his points would lost. He also said, "I don’t care if your Falun Gong is good or bad. We are just fooling the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). We only need the ‘Four Statements’ to muddle through, and you will also get your sentence commuted. Otherwise, you have to suffer every day. There is no rancor between us, and I don’t want to treat you this way. Isn’t everything arranged by the officers?" He saw that Mr. Zhou remained unmoved, so he said, "Can you resist the criminals? You cannot. The criminals have all kinds of means to torture you to death." He repeated both these hard and soft tactics. After a while, criminal inmate Guo Guangzhi (from Jiamusi) and Xiaopangzi (from Yichun) physically abused Mr. Zhou, saying that he failed to appreciate their kindness. They punched him in the stomach. He almost couldn’t endure the pain and squatted down with his hands covering the stomach. Xiaopangzi dragged him up and said, "You are pretending." He also punched him in the stomach and pushed him down to the ground. At that time, Mr. Zhou’s head hit the ground and started to bleed at the eyebrow. Xiaopangzi tried to twist Mr. Zhou's arms back and tightly held both of his hands together. Then Zheng came over to stop Xiaopangzi and pull him up. Blood splattered on his clothes and left many bloodstains. The three inmates wiped the blood off Mr. Zhou's face and applied some iodine on his wound. Xiaopangzi said, "If I wasn’t leaving this cell and being transferred tomorrow, I would certainly fix him." Zheng Taiping also said to Mr. Zhou, "Go back and think it over. Give me an answer tomorrow." They then allowed him to sleep.

When Mr. Zhou got up on the morning of June 6, his face was covered with blood. Many criminals saw it. When he went to wash his face, the No. 6 cell head Wang Dengming stopped him and ordered him to go back to the cell. Xiaopangzi and other criminals again wiped the blood from his face with napkins in order to hide what happened. The guards of the Grill Ward simply ignored the blood and wounds on Mr. Zhou.

Zheng Taiping often punched and slapped the two practitioners on the neck and the back. He threatened them, "See how I will fix you tomorrow. I will make you stand the whole night. I will make you die from bleeding from seven apertures," and so on. During this period, the workshop head Guo Tao (a criminal inmate from Jiamusi) participated in the attempted brainwashing of the two practitioners. He mainly induced and threatened them. This kind of persecution lasted 15 days. Later on, the practitioners were mainly punished with forced standing during the daytime and were closely monitored. This lasted until June 26. The long-term standing caused Mr. Zhou Shuhai severe back pain. There was a scar about 1.5 cm long on his left eyebrow.

The authorities from the Hulan Prison are still continuing their persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Although the guards from the Grill Ward didn’t seem to directly participate in the torture of practitioners, they instructed the criminal inmates to brainwash the four practitioners and promised them incentives to do so. Furthermore, three guards called Mr. Zhou Shuzhang and Zhou Shuhai in to have talks separately. They tried to get the practitioners to renounce Falun Gong, but failed.

The Atrocities by Shuangcheng City Police Nearly Blinds Me

On February 4, 2002, two young men abruptly broke into my house, illegally arrested me and took me away, without a word, to a temporarily rented detention center where only Falun Gong practitioners were detained. It was on the fifth floor of the Qiulin Company in Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province.

At the time, many practitioners were detained there. An older woman was tied to a chair. Everyone, young and old, was forced to stand without shoes on the cold concrete floor. We were forced to stand two to three hours each time, at all times of the day, with no toilet privileges.

The following are accounts of the persecution I witnessed and experienced, as well as the names of those responsible.

Yan Shanli, assistant mayor of Shuangcheng District, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province, hired some jobless people to supervise Falun Gong practitioners. Yin himself beat and verbally abused practitioners, and also hired others to do the same and to sexually harass female practitioners.

Liu Yuhua and a woman named Gao, who were both about fifty years old, were primarily responsible for brainwashing Falun Gong practitioners, forcing them to attend meetings and watch movies defaming Falun Gong.

Chen Yunzhan and Ran Lingcai, who beat and insulted Falun Gong practitioners very viciously, experienced karmic retribution for their crimes and died (this has been reported on the Internet).

Yan Shanli always ordered one or two practitioners to go outside and demanded that they answer the question, "Will you practice or not?" If the answer was, "yes," regardless of whether the practitioner was young or old, male or female, Yan Shanli would punch and kick them. One time, when two young practitioners, about ten years old, only answered, "Practice," he violently slapped them, so vehemently and loudly that the sound could be heard throughout the detention center. On the following day, he did not come to work. We heard that after hitting people, his hands were hurt. This was another example of karmic retribution.

One time when Yan Shanli forced practitioners to stand, a female practitioner was so weak from long-term imprisonment that she could not stand without others’ help. But Yan forced her to stand by herself. In addition, this evil Yan, to everyone’s surprise, instructed the people he had hired to swear and to spray urine inside the building.

Falun Gong practitioners not only suffered physical torture, but also endured continuous mental harassment. Starting at 8:00 a.m., under Liu Yuhua’s supervision, we were forced to watch the video showing the staged "Tiananmen self-immolation."

Liu was a hypocrite. She talked very nicely and showed her disguised "concern" over practitioner’s physical condition when families came to visit. But she was surreptitiously extorting money from practitioner’s family members.

As an older Falun Gong practitioner of 70 years, I used to have normal vision. After having been detained in that dark and wet place for more than twenty days, gradually I became almost blind.

After discovering this, my family back home requested my release, but their request was rejected. Chen Yongzhan said that I must agree to be "transformed" and that I must sign a guarantee statement promising not to practice Falun Gong any longer, and that I must trample over a picture of our benevolent Master before I could be released. I flatly refused. Knowing my determination, my folks strongly demanded that the persecutors release me. They unwillingly agreed to release me based on the fact that I had a serious eye problem and they did not want to be responsible for any consequences if anything should happen to me. But, they forced my folks to pay 3,000 yuan. My family, without any alternative, paid the ransom and took me home.

Although I am now out of this terrible detention center in Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province, those people, who were controlled by the evil and who have done permanent damage to me and my family, have yet to repay their debts. My eyes have still not recovered.
