  • Mr. Yang Pingsheng Tortured to Death in Prison - His Family Only Allowed to See His Ashes

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Yang Pingsheng was from Wuning County, Jiangxi Province. He was tortured to death at Nanchang City Prison in March 2007. His family was instructed to pick up his ashes, and was not allowed to see his body.

Mr. Yang Pingsheng, 64, was arrested by Wuning County Police Department in April 2005 while passing out truth clarifying materials. He was sentenced to four years in prison and detained in Nanchang City Prison.

The Nanchang Prison is also called Jiangxi Guanghua Plastics Limited Company, and is located at 366 Changzhengxi Street, Xinjiang County, Nanchang City. The prison's "transforming" office head is Hong Huimin (male), who plans all the brainwashing activities. He was established as their "model employee," and awarded the "Labor Day medal" by the Chinese Communist Party. Guard Sun Weibing (male) was promoted to deputy office head due to actively joining the persecution. He is in charge of the solitary confinement cells, and instructs other guards to shock Falun Gong practitioners with electric batons. He is widely considered the most vicious guard in the prison.

Hebei Province: Mr. Cao Jiwei Injured by Torture - Wife Placed in Detention

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Cao Jiwei is from Zhaogezhuang Township, Laishui County, Hebei Province. He began practicing Falun Gong in 1996. Since July 1999, when the Jiang Zemin regime started the persecution of Falun Gong, he has been repeatedly arrested and subjected to persecution. On the fourth day of the 2007 Chinese New Year, police detained and physically abused him. The resulting injuries are not yet healed. His wife Meng Qinglian is being illegally detained. The following is a brief history of the persecution that this couple has endured.

In July 1999, Cao Jiwei and his wife were taken to Zhaogezhuang Township for forced brainwashing and “reform.” The police also fined each of them 100 yuan. In March 2000, Cao and his wife went to the Laishui County government and to Zhaogezhuang Township to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. Thugs dispatched by the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Laishui County Party Committee chained Cao Jiwei’s wife Meng Qinglian to a post in the county’s CCP headquarters. Another woman practitioner, who was six months pregnant, was also chained. The police tortured Mr. Cao Jiwei with electric shocks, and the harsh torture severely injured his legs.

On April 7, 2000 the couple was sent to the Laishui County Communist Party School for further persecution. In order to try to force them to give up Falun Gong, the Party Committee staff and police tortured them severely. At one point, deputy party head Sun Guijie whipped Ms. Meng Qinglian’s face with a shoe. One day in the middle of the night the police hit them with a wooden stick and forced them to kneel on bricks. Then the thugs laid a stick across their legs, and several policemen stepped on the stick. The couple could not endure the torture any longer and signed a statement against their will. They still had to pay a 6,600 yuan fine. They were placed deeply in debt before they were allowed to go home.

On April 23, 2002, the Zhaogezhuang Township police again arrested Ms. Meng Qinglian. They handcuffed her behind her back and put her under a big poplar tree to humiliate her in public. They even burned her with a cigarette butt. Mr. Cao Jiwei came to the township government to ask for his wife’s release. Instead of releasing his wife, the police detained him too, and they beat him with wooden sticks. He was covered with purple bruises and could not even walk afterwards.

In addition to the physical torture, the police from Zhaogezhuang often harassed their family, causing the family members to live in constant fear. The injured Mr. Cao Jiwei and his wife decided to leave home and went into exile. His 70-year-old mother and kindergarten-age daughter were left at home to care for each other.

On August 29, 2005, Mr. Cao Jiwei came home to visit his mother and daughter after a long absence. In less than five minutes, the police arrived and arrested Cao Jiwei. They also searched his house and turned it upside down. Things were thrown all over the floor. They took Cao Jiwei to the Laishui County Detention Center for further persecution. After a period of time, a healthy Cao Jiwei became extremely feeble. Despite his weak condition Wang Fucai from the 610 Office and Dai Chunjie from the police department still decided to send him to the Baoding Forced Labor Camp. Shortly after that, the labor camp returned him to the Laishui County Detention Center because he was too weak to do any hard labor. Wang Fucai and Dai Chunjie still refused to release him and kept him in detention. Cao Jiwei was finally released from the labor camp on December 1, 2005.

On the fourth day of 2007 Chinese New Year, Mr. Cao Jiwei was stopped by officer Wang Jinshi from the Loucun Township Police Station in Laishui County while on the road. Wang robbed him of 5,800 yuan in cash, a computer and a printer, valued at more than 10,000 yuan. The police then brutally beat Cao Jiwei, shocked him with an electric baton, looped a rope around his neck, and slapped him in the face. Wang Jinshi removed Cao’s shoes and threw them away. He also stomped on Cao's hands, causing multiple cuts. His hands were bloodied and he had a black eye. Afterwards, Wang Jinshi took him to the Laishui County Detention Center.

On the ninth day of the 2007 Chinese New Year, having learned of her son’s detention, Cao Jiwei’s mother came to the detention center asking to see her son. The police refused and said, “We are not in a position to make a decision. You have to ask people at the Loucun Township Police Station.” Cao’s mother refused to leave and insisted on seeing her son, but the police still tried to push her out and said, “If you don’t leave, we will take your son to a open space and electrically shock him until he kneels in front of us and begs forgiveness.” Cao’s mother was still undeterred and refused to comply. Then the police threw her out. They grabbed her by the arms and took her to Highway 112 in Laishui County. By then it was 9 o' clock in the evening. Cao’s wife and sister later went to the Loucun Police Station but also could not secure his release.

On the eleventh day of the 2007 Chinese New Year, Cao Jiwei’s mother, wife and niece went to 610 Office head Wang Fucai's house to demand Cao’s immediately release. When they arrived, Wang’s family refused to answer the door. Instead, Wang’s wife and son shouted profanities through the door. They even threatened, “If you don’t leave right away, we will call the 610 Office and have you arrested.” They had to leave, but before they reached the end of the alley, Wang Fucai, Dai Chunjie and a group of police arrived. They beat the three women and refused to stop, even after they had fallen to the ground. They even forced stones and cigarette butts into their mouths. The police later took them to the Laishui Detention Center.

On the fifteenth Day of the 2007 Chinese New Year, the badly injured Mr. Cao Jiwei was finally released. Currently Cao’s wife Ms. Meng Qinglian is still being detained.

Ms. Yang Xiaolan from Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province Inhumanly Tortured for the Past Seven Years

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Yang Xiaolan lives in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. On October 26, 2006, when she was released after a three-year term, she passed out at the prison gate. Guards told her father that they had treated Ms. Yang Xiaolan like their own daughter, but Mr. Yang saw how his daughter had changed into a very pale and thin person who was very depressed. He had no idea what had happened to his daughter behind the gate, and he did not dare to tell her that her grandmother and mother had both died indirectly from worrying about her while she was detained.

Ms. Yang's residential registration is in Zengcheng City, Guangdong Province, and she lives in Shenzhen City. Her health was average before practicing Falun Gong in March 1999, but she was very competitive and lived a very exhausting life. After she had the good fortune to begin practicing Falun Gong, she tried to be a good person according to "Truthfulness-Benevolence-Forbearance." Her mind and body were both purified, and her family life became serene and peaceful.

Ms. Yang Xiaolan, an average citizen of China, has been through inhuman tortures for the past seven years just because she kept her faith. Mistreatment at the hands of the local police station, the detention center, the forced labor camp, and the prison caused her to be separated from her husband and son for more than six years and her family members to die from worry.

    Appealing in Beijing

On July 20, 1999, the CCP began the persecution of Falun Gong. Out of compassion, Ms. Yang went to Shenzhen City's government to clarify the truth and appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. She was detained for 24 hours in Liantang Police Station in the Luohu District, Shenzhen City. Her son Chen Jieke was only six years old. Ms. Yang told the police that her son was home alone, but they didn't care.

After that, Ms. Yang's peaceful home was constantly harassed by the police and the Neighborhood Administration. Her family lived under close scrutiny every hour of the day. The police also confiscated Falun Gong materials from her home. Her neighbors thought she was involved in some crime and did not understand why she was being monitored so closely for such a long time. Ms. Yang's husband lives in Hong Kong. The police forced him to report to the Liantang Police Station and write a guarantee statement to watch his wife closely, not let her go to Beijing to appeal, and otherwise detain Ms. Yang. If Ms. Yang ever went to Beijing to appeal, the police said that they would confiscate his travel permit and threatened to never allow him to enter Mainland China again.

At that time, the media was slandering Falun Gong and Master Li everyday. Ms. Yang knew for sure that Falun Gong was not as the media portrayed because she became both mentally and physically healthy after practicing Falun Gong. In order to clarify the truth, she went to Beijing to appeal and was detained several times.

In July 2000, Ms. Yang went to Beijing again and took her son with her. They were arrested by policemen from the Qingta Station. Their computer and one thousand yuan in cash were confiscated, and they were detained for three days. They went to Tiananmen Square to unfurl a banner after being released. Policemen arrested them and forced them into a police van. Policemen shut the door, closed the windows, and then began to brutally beat Ms. Yang over her ears. She almost passed out due to the cruel beating.

The policemen twisted Ms. Yang's son Jieke's ears and twisted his wrists, causing him to sob. Other practitioners that tried to stop the police from hurting the little boy were all beaten viciously in the vehicle.

Ms. Yang and her son were both taken to Tiananmen Square Police Station, from which many detained practitioners were transferred to other stations since it was getting overcrowded. Policemen body-searched each practitioner and forced them to say where they came from. A female police officer threatened Ms. Yang, saying, "You'd better tell us your name and address, otherwise you will be tortured." Ms. Yang ignored her. Officers then tried to make her son Jieke tell by saying, "You are a good boy. Where are you from? If you tell us, we'll let you go home with your mother." Young Jieke did not give in no matter which trick they played. They finally locked Ms. Yang and her son in the basement.

There were lots of blood stains on the walls of the basement. Ms. Yang knew it was evidence of practitioners being tortured. Young Jieke was thirsty and hungry after ten hours of detention, but the police did not care and still tried to force them to give their names and address. Later, Chen Jieke was crying so much from his stomachache that they were released.

Upon returning to their home in Shenzhen City, Ms. Yang learned that the police were watching them. Ms. Yang and her son had to leave home to avoid being arrested.

Severely Tortured in Sanshui Women's Forced Labor Camp

In November 2000, Ms. Yang Xiaolan went to Shunde City to pass out truth clarifying materials and was arrested. The police subjected her to sleep deprivation for two whole days. When she was detained in the Sunde City Qinliu Detention Center, she keep doing the exercises. The guards handcuffed her and attached a straight metal rod onto both of her legs for one week, causing her to not be able to bend her legs or relax while sleeping. She was in tremendous pain. Ms. Yang went on hunger strike to protest this treatment. The guards pressed her down, tied her up with rope, and then had an inexperienced nurse insert a tube to force-feed her. Ms. Yang was screaming from pain, and her blood flowed like running water.

Without any legal procedures, Ms. Yang Xiaolan and seven other Falun Gong practitioners in Shenzhen City, including Ms. Huang Qiuyan, Ms. Rao Licong, Ms. Wei Lingli, and Mr. Wang Hongjun, were each sentenced to two years of forced labor. The Shunde City Police Department took their new van (worth 300,000 yuan) and 10,000 yuan in cash.

Ms. Yang insisted on protesting the persecution while being detained in Sanshui Forced Labor Camp. The Fourth Ward Head Tian Shuling (female) and other guards tortured Ms. Yang by hanging her up by her handcuffs and verbally abused her. They locked her in solitary confinement and closely monitored her. Tian Shuling had her term extended for five months for no reason. Ms. Yang's hair grew very long during the detention. Ward Head Chen ordered several prisoners such as Li Xiaohong and others to hold Ms. Yang down and step on her head. Chen threatened Ms. Yang with an electric baton while they cut her hair.

In December 2003, Fourth Ward Head Tian Shuling led a group of guards and prisoners to handcuff Ms. Yang behind her back and then hang her up by her handcuffs. They deprived her of sleep for 24 hours, shocked her with an electric baton, and gagged her by stuffing her mouth with a towel or taping her mouth shut. They forced her to watch a video slandering Falun Gong and its founder. They intentionally left the window open and poured cold water over her barely dressed body while denouncing her and Falun Gong. They hung her up and only allowed the tips of her toes to touch the ground so that the handcuffs cut into her wrists.

One guard kicked Ms. Yang with her leather boots. The guards encouraged prisoners like Li Xiaohong to beat Ms. Yang severely. The prisoners did not allow Ms. Yang to use the toilet, kicked her private areas, and threatened to poke her breast with a needle. They also threatened to put a toothbrush into her vagina if Ms. Yang still refused to write the "Guarantee Statement". They forced Ms. Yang's feet to step on the Falun Gong founder's photo. Ms. Yang could not move when she was being tortured by being hung up, and her private area was swollen due to not being able to use the toilet. The guards forced her to drink her own urine, or else they would ruin the photo of Falun Gong's founder.

When Ms. Yang was tortured by being hung up, Sanshui Labor Camp Head Tang Guangli, female, led a group of people to see Ms. Yang, who pointed out that persecuting Falun Gong is a crime. Tang said angrily, "Everything has been directed by Jiang's phone orders. We were only taking orders. You better be smart; refusing to accept the brainwashing is not beneficial for you. You can either accept the brainwashing or die."

After eight full days of torture that was worse than death, Ms. Yang was disfigured. She was a tragic sight to behold. Two toes on each foot were numb from only being able to touch the floor with those toes when hung up. The four toes regained sensation only after six months.

Beginning on December 31, 2002, Ms. Yang Xiaolan was detained in solitary confinement again. She was not allowed to bathe, use a toilet, sleep, or use a blanket. Two prisoners took turns watching her closely. The guards intentionally opened her cell window to freeze her. She was forced to sit, shivering with cold, on the cement floor. She went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution for 45 days. The drug-addict inmates dragged her to be force-fed. Ward Head Tian Shuling shouted, "That makes it too easy for her. If she refuses to eat again, feed her feces from the toilet."

At that time, many inmates had rashes that were similar to SARS symptoms. Guards did not tell the people what SARS was, and they separated those prisoners together with Ms. Yang. They had a fever, and they were coughing and groaning with pain nonstop every day. Ms. Yang tried to comfort them and clarify the truth about Falun Gong to them. Some of them were very moved and said to Ms. Yang, "Falun Gong practitioners are good people. Those guards and prisoners are inhuman; in the future, how will they pay for what they have done?"

In the middle of February 2003, the guards deceived Ms. Yang into going to the study building, where they cruelly tortured her by depriving her of her right to use the toilet, which made her soil her pants. They forced her to squat for a long time, electric baton shocked her, and forced her to watch TV programs that slandered Falun Gong. Several prisoners tied her up with her hands behind her back and put her feet on Master Li's photo, or they would force her to sit on the photo. After being tortured like that for several days nonstop, Ms. Yang dizzy and couldn't think clearly.

When Ms. Yang Xiaolan was released in April 2003, because of the location of her residential registration, her father had to come all the way from her birthplace in Sichuan Province. They picked her up, took her to the local police station, and took away her release certificate. Her father had to take her back to where she had been born in the Wutongqiao District, Leshan City, Sichuan Province. After arriving home, she learned that the Leshan City 610 Office had ransacked their home in 2000, taken away her personal photos, and scared her grandmother and mother badly.

She tried to recover a bit at home, but the Wutongqiao District 610 officers kept coming to harass her, causing her family to live in terror. In order to reduce her family's mental pressure and prevent police from harassing her family, she was forced to leave her hometown to go into hiding.

Detained in Futian District Detention Center

On October 25, 2003, Ms. Yang Xiaolan was living in a fellow practitioner's home in Meilin Village, Shenzhen City. Shenzhen City 610 Office agents and police from the Meilin Village Police Station stormed into the house, arrested her, and detained her in the Futian District Detention Center. Fellow practitioners Ms. Xue Aimei, Ms. Guo Yiqun, Ms. Yan Hong, and others were all arrested before her. Police snatched Ms. Yang's handbag and found a rental contract signed by fellow practitioner Ms. Chen Li. They arrested Ms. Chen Li according to the address listed on the contract. They lied to her, saying that Ms. Yang had led them to find her.

In Futian Detention Center, the 610 Office personnel interrogated Ms. Yang with cruel torture. They took turns torturing her constantly and did not allow her to sleep for 60 hours. They hung her up by handcuffs attached to both hands behind her back, causing the cuffs to cut into her wrists, only allowing her toes to touch the floor. They kicked her and slammed her head against the metal gate while pulling her by her hair.

Her whole body was swollen due to torture. They threatened her with cuffing her thumb (1) and then hanging her up or forcing her sit on the electric chair. They took off her socks, rolled up her sleeves and pants, poured water all over her, and then turned on the electric fan to freeze her. They shut the regular lights off and then blinded her with special lights. They were green, red, or yellow, but they hurt her eyes terribly. The atmosphere was very frightening. They took turns torturing her to make her feel like she was living in a nightmare. They feared that their crimes would be exposed, so all of the torture was conducted in the middle of the night. Ms. Yang was tortured until she was mentally dazed, and her wrists were swollen severely for one month.

In order to protest the violence, she went on hunger strike for two months. She wrote three letters during those two months to the Detention Center Head, the Futian District Police Department Head, and Shenzhen City Procuratorate Head Shen Yuanxiu (male), exposing the 610 Office agents' crimes of torture.

During her hunger strike, the guards in Futian Detention Center tortured her by putting 40-pound shackles on her for a whole week. She wore that even while she was using the bathroom or being force-fed.

Ms. Yang Xiaolan's life was in danger during her hunger strike, and she was taken to the Huaqiang Street Red Cross Hospital in Shenzhen City. She was detained there for 30 days, still in shackles that were connected to her bed. Another practitioner Ms. Cai, who was in her 50s, was also taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, and she stayed in the same room with Ms. Yang. Officers from the Shenzhen City 610 Office, local police station, and Futian Detention Center took turns watching them around the clock. Ms. Cai was very weak, but she still wore the 40-pound shackles. After ten days, the guards said they were taking her for a check up, but she never came back. Ms. Yang didn't eat in the hospital for almost two months.

During her detention, Shenzhen City 610 Office personnel tried to tempt Ms. Yang by saying, "We will help you get a passport to get out of the country. If you are smart (meaning give in to their demands), we will not treat you badly." Ms. Yang absolutely refused these offers. An office head in the Futian District Police Department said to Ms. Yang, "If you sign your name and guarantee to not participate in any Falun Gong activities, we will release you." Ms. Yang did not answer him, and as a result, she was sentenced to three years in prison.

    Tortured in Prison

On December 21, 2004, Ms. Yang was taken to the Guangdong Province Women's Prison. They cut her hair short, put her in a prisoner's uniform, and ordered her to do slave labor. Ms. Yang refused to do slave labor because she had not committed any crimes. The guards on the Fourth Ward encouraged prisoners to drag her downstairs. They stopped by the guards at the Fourth Ward entrance because they were afraid of being seen by visitors. Six regular prisoners carried Ms. Yang to the work section. They first carried her face up, but then they flipped her over, making her face the ground, to increase her pain. The guards cursed her and threatened her with electric batons.

Ms. Yang still refused to do the forced labor, so Warden Yi Lihong (female) tortured her secretly by forcing her standing facing the wall for a long period of time with her legs and arms straight. Yi Lihong and Guard Yu Xiao rolled up Ms. Yang's pants and electric baton shocked her on her legs. The guards also encouraged prisoner Wen Yulian (female, a drug-addict, death row prisoner) dragged Ms. Yang along the floor, causing her pants to fall off. Her buttocks and hips were bleeding and scratched badly due to being dragged along the ground. When the prisoners took naps after lunch for an hour, the guards would tell Ms. Yang to wash the dishes of the over 600 people in the prison.

The 610 Office staff threatened Ms. Yang, saying, "If you refuse to listen to us, it would be rather easy to fix you. We have lots of means. Whoever dares to oppose the Communist Party will never meet a good end. You must quietly obey and not do whatever you want."

Normally the prisoners can go to bed at 9 p.m., but guards directed prisoners to force Ms. Yang to recite the prison rules until midnight, yet she had to get up at 6 a.m. to do forced labor right after breakfast. The guards and prisoners crudely cursed her everyday, insulted her, and threatened her. Prisoner Wen Yulian beat her cruelly in front of the guards, and the guards turned a blind eye because they supported the beatings. Ms. Yang had blood in her stool due to the heavy labor. The guards did not care. One of the guards Zhang Xinhui (female) said, "The Constitution only protects those who follow the law. If anyone refuses to follow the law, we should not treat that person according to the law. We can suppress those who violate the law without following the same legal procedures."

When Ms. Yang was taken from Futian Detention Center to the prison, her cash was withheld. The Fourth Ward put her under a strict monitoring system (no visitation, no wiring money from home, no mail, and no purchasing items). The money that her family mailed to her was all rejected. Ms. Yang was violently criticized everyday, and she had no toiletries to use, not even shampoo or toothpaste. Under such unreasonable mistreatment, she went on hunger strike to protest. The 610 Office agents recorded when guards would "nicely" try to make her eat. When the recording stopped, guards shouted, "Take her to be force-fed!" Prisoners tied her up, and the prison doctors inserted the tube roughly, ignoring how much pain Ms. Yang was in. They said, "You deserve this pain!"

Inside the prison cell, guards threatened her, saying, "A hunger strike violates the prison rules. You will be deprived of sleep for 24 hours and hung up by handcuffs if you still refuse to eat." The guards told prisoners to chastise her, and they did not allow anyone to lend her any personal items or speak to her. They were trying to isolate her and torture her mentally. Ms. Yang had to use only water to wash after using the toilet because there were no tissues to use, and she had to use strips of her clothing when she was menstruating. The prison gives 15 yuan to each prisoner, but her 15 yuan was used to buy notebooks. It was not until August 2005 that Ms. Yang received her own money that the detention center had withheld.

The Fourth Ward has a dark room called the "Speaking Room." There, Ms. Yang was forced to watch television or a videotape that slandered Falun Gong and its founder. She was also forced to write she "understandings" on it. If not, she would not be allowed to sleep. The guards and prisoners took turns berating her. They tried to bring about her mental collapse so that she would accept the brainwashing. They were trying to force Ms. Yang to speak falsely and slander Falun Gong .They even forced her to read Communist doctrines and to "admit" that gods do not exist. Ms. Yang's mind was a blur due to the mental torture. She had to write a large quantity of notes everyday and sit on a small stool, causing her buttocks to retain two dark marks (they later changed to a taller chair). The guards ordered the prisoners to record all of Ms. Yang's activities during this intensive brainwashing period. The 610 Office personnel rewarded these prisoners who participated in brainwashing Ms. Yang with some snacks, and even secretly let prisoner Wu Anfang watch Korean soap operas.

    Drug Abuse

In June 2005, several doctors arrived at the Fourth Ward and injected a white drug into more than ten practitioners. The doctors said that Ms. Yang "could easily be sick with tuberculosis," so she needed to take three pills daily. The guards ordered her to take the pills, otherwise it would be seen as violating the prison rules. Ms. Yang felt nauseous and dizzy after taking the pills, so she refused. Nevertheless, inmates forced her to take them.

On the night of July 4, 2005, Ms. Yang suddenly passed out and appeared to be close to death. Her hands and feet turned purple. The prison doctor reported her condition, and she was sent to Zhuliao Hospital for resuscitation. Doctors did a blood transfusion, and the prison notified her younger brother, Yang Bin, who works in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, that his sister was dying. Mr. Yang Bin was tied up with his work, so he could not get to Guangdong Province right away. Ms. Yang survived after three days of intensive treatment. The guards admitted to giving her certain drugs in the prison, and the doctors ordered them to not give her such drugs anymore.

Ms. Yang was transferred to the recovery area in the prison hospital. On the way, blood was oozing out of her abdomen. When she asked the doctors why, they said the blood was coming out of her stomach because she had ulcers. The doctor gave her a great deal of medicine and kept her on intravenous injections for 20 days but refused to tell her the cause. Several days after being checked out of the hospital, the 610 Office agents told her she was sick with epilepsy. Ms. Yang said no one in her family had ever had such an illness, and she had never had any such symptoms, so how was it possible that she had such a disease? The 610 Office person said that they must trust science since the doctor found out about it from her blood test.

In October 2005, a 610 Office agent handcuffed Ms. Yang Xiaolan and took her to get a electroencephalogram (EEG) done in a major hospital in Guangzhou City. The doctor said she was sick with an early-stage mental disease and forced her to sign the "Family Notice of Illness."

Ms. Yang had been transformed from a healthy young lady into a deeply depressed, constantly fainting patient due to the torture she suffered in the Fourth Ward. In November 2005 and February 2006, Ms. Yang wrote twice to Prison Head Zhang Zhiping (female), declaring that all the "transformations" of Falun Gong practitioners were accomplished through intense pressure and torture. She kindly told Zhang that Falun Gong and its founder were innocent, and that anything that practitioners had written or said due to the intense pressure inside the prison was null and void. Ms. Yang was further tortured due to these letters. The torture was exactly the same as before, except she had to copy down the prison rules several dozen times or she would not be allowed to sleep. Guard Zhang Xinhui was in charge of this. They also forced Ms. Yang to do their "homework" and forced her to write things ending in "the above are my true thoughts." She was not allowed to sleep if she did not finish such fabricated writings.

Ms. Yang was often deprived of sleep. From February to July 2006, Guard Zhang Xinhui ordered prisoners Fu Guifen and Wu Anfang (both female) to watch Ms. Yang closely and encouraged them to do violent things to Ms. Yang to stop her from speaking up for Falun Gong and to force her to write the "Five Statements". Prisoner Fu Guifen's nickname is "Tiger" because she often beats practitioners cruelly and intentionally makes trouble for them. Guards use her especially to torture steadfast practitioners. These two prisoners bullied and constantly beat Ms. Yang until her body was covered with purple bruises. They fabricated excuses to abuse Ms. Yang in front of the guards. The guards ignored the truth and forced Ms. Yang write a "regret letter," saying that it was her fault. Before Ms. Yang was about to be released, Fu Guifen beat her so hard that it caused her legs to be covered with purple bruises again. Ms. Yang reported such abuse to the guards, but they chose ignore her.

On October 25, 2006, 610 Office agents Wei, Lai, and Zhang Xinhui took Ms. Yang to a small room and threatened her to give her "understanding" of Falun Gong. If she did not, she would not be released. She refused. Wei threatened her again by saying, "You can only take one change of clothes tomorrow when you are released; the superiors ordered it."

The Zengcheng City 610 Office called Ms. Yang's father in Sichuan Province to pick up her up in Guangzhou City, otherwise they would not release her. On October 26, 2006, Ms. Yang was released. She fainted at the gate. When she came to, she found that her old father, a doctor, and officers from the Zengcheng City 610 Office were there. The prison guards shamelessly said they had treated her like their own daughter. Ms. Yang was a healthy, kind, normal, young lady before she entered the prison. Now she was sick with an ulcer, epilepsy, and a mental disorder, which were the result of being tortured prison. How could the prison not be held responsibility for that?

We sincerely hope that Ms. Yang will recover soon, and we call on all kindhearted people in the world to condemn the guards in the Guangdong Province Women's Prison for their brutal torture and illegally detention of Falun Gong practitioners. Faith is innocent! Immediately stop the persecution of Falun Gong! Release all detained practitioners!

Ms. Wang Liqiu from Jilin City, Jilin Province Holds Hunger Strike and Suffers Serious Heart Attacks

At noon on March 24, 2007, Jilin Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Wang Liqiu's mother received a phone call from a kind-hearted person, saying that Wang Liqiu was holding a hunger strike in the detention center. She often had heart attacks and her health condition was very serious. The caller also told the family members that they should go to the detention center and request Wang Liqiu's release. After receiving the phone call, Wang Liqiu's 77-year-old father and 74-year-old mother were very anxious. They had no choice and decided to go to the detention center to ask for their daughter's release.

Wang Liqiu's elderly father and mother missed their daughter day and night. After people who visited the detention center told them that Falun Gong practitioners suffered a lot in prison, they became even more anxious. On March 23, Wang Liqiu's parents went to the National Security Team of Jilin City Police Department to ask for her release. They called 86-432-2409796 and tried to contacted Di Shigang, who was in charge of Wang's case. The person who answered the phone said that he was only a guard, and that others were in a meeting. He refused to meet with them and said that Wang's case had already been transferred to Changyi. Ms. Wang's parents said that they had gone to the procurator, but the police department was in charge of this case, so they went there. After hearing this, the person hung up immediately and no one answered subsequent calls.

On March 24, when Wang Liqiu's mother received the phone call and heard that her daughter had gone on a hunger strike and had a serious heart attack, she was very anxious and concerned about her daughter's health. She discussed the situation with the family. Ms. Wang's family called Du Xingze from the National Security Team of Changyi Police Department in Jilin City and Yang Daguang, the deputy director of the Changyi Police Deaprtment. Yang Daguang said that he was not in charge of Ms. Wang's case, and that Jilin City Police Department was in charge of it. He promised to monitor this case. However, when Ms. Wang's family called him again, his cell phone had already been turned off. Ms. Wang's family called Liu Peizhu, deputy mayor of Jilin City, and also the director of Jilin City Police Department, along with deputy directors Jiang Jichang, Han Weimin and Yue Zhongtian, but no one answered the phones. Ms. Wang's family called deputy director Liu Wei, and his daughter answered the phone. They asked her to tell her father about Ms. Wang's situation and ask him to handle this life and death issue. Liu's daughter agreed. They called deputy director Yu Zeli. Yu answered the phone but said that he was not in charge of the case. However, after seeing the anxiety of Wang Liqiu's family, he told them to call Xing, the head of the Appeals Office, who was in charge of the case. Xing's cell phone was turned off.

Because they did not have phone numbers for Lin Guorui in Jilin City Police Department or Di Shigang, who was in charge of the case, they had to call the leaders of the detention center. Either no one answered the phone, or the person who answered the phone denied he was the person that Wang Liqiu's family was looking for. If it was the leaders' wives who answered the phone, they claimed that the leaders either were in the hospital or had already left that department. Wang Liqiu's family did not know what to do, and they finally decided to go directly to the detention center.

Wang Liqiu's father, mother and other relatives took a taxi to the remote Jilin City Detention Center, but the guard did not let them in. The cold wind gusting in the entrance made them shiver. Wang's family members asked the guard to open the door, to at least let the older couple in to get warmer, but the guard refused their request again. Afterwards the family members became upset, and told him that Ms. Wang Liqiu was holding a hunger strike and had a serious heart attack, and that if he did not notify the officials in charge, the guard would be held responsible should any serious problem develop with Ms. Wang Liqiu. When the guard saw the couple speaking angrily, he called the detention center office.

A woman answered the phone. She identified herself as a team leader and told Wang's family not to worry. She said that Wang Liqiu had stopped the hunger strike and that her health was fine. Wang's family did not believe her. The woman said that they should not stay there but instead go to contact the department in charge of the case. Wang's family repeated their concerns about Wang Liqiu, and they were not willing to leave. The woman then said that she was not the right person to answer this phone call. Wang Liqiu's mother talked to her for a while, and kept crying when talking.

After the phone call, the guard asked the seven members of Wang's family to leave right away. Wang's family members said they were worried about Wang Liqiu, and they wanted to at least get a glimpse of her face before leaving. The guard was not willing to pass their request to the higher authorities at that time.

On the night of February 13, 2007, Falun Gong practitioner Wang Liqiu went to visit a person and was arrested by officers from Jilin City 610 Office and the National Security Team of Jilin City Police Department, who were waiting there. She and other Falun Gong practitioners, including Mu Chunhong, were illegally detained in Jilin City Detention Center. Wang Liqiu's family and Mu Chunhong, Zhao Guoxing and Liu Yuhe's families looked for them. Beginning at midnight on February 14, five Falun Gong practitioners' families had gone to the Xiangyang Police Station, the Chuanying National Security Team, the Jilin Detention Center and Jilin City 610 Office to ask for the five practitioners' release. Later, they went to the National Security Team of Jilin City Police Department many times and asked for the practitioners' release. However, all of these departments just shifted their responsibilities, gave vague answers or threatened the practitioners' families. No one was willing to say a just word for the victims' families. Since the next day was the Chinese New Year, they went to the reception room in the building where the National Security Team of Jilin City Police Department is located. They waited there to meet the director or other officers in charge because they hoped to learn information about their family members, and to request their release. However, the guard in the reception room did not pass any of their requests inside. The passing-by officials also did not pay any attention to them. The practitioners' families could not help but wait for a long time, and returned home disappointed.

After the five practitioners were missing for more than 20 days, Wang Liqiu and Zhao Guoxing's families received the criminal detention notification regarding Wang Liqiu and Zhao Guoxing from the National Security Team of the Changyi District Police Department in Jilin City. However, Zhao Yuhe and Mu Chunhong's families did not receive any such notice. Their families went to meet Du Xingze, the head of the Changyi National Security Team, and told him about the benefits that practitioners received from practicing Falun Gong. They asked Du not to follow Jiang Zemin and not to persecute Falun Gong. The practitioners' families thought Du might try to help them or at least tell them their family members' situation. However, after the National Security Team of Jilin City Police Department forced him to submit the case to the Changyi Procuratorate, he made excuses to avoid meeting with the practitioners' families. The Changyi Procuratorate refused the case, using the excuse that it was not in its jurisdiction, so the case was transferred to Jilin City Procuratorate. In order to reach their goals in persecuting practitioners, the National Security Team of Jilin City Police Department and Jilin City 610 Office fabricated lies and issued arrest warrants for the five practitioners on March 22. The five families suffered much harm. They personally experienced the unjust law enforcement situation in China. They now worry about their family members' safety even more, and they don't trust the police.

Wang Liqiu's parents saw their daughter benefit both physically and mentally from practicing Falun Gong. What they saw was definitely different from the lies propagated on TV and in the newspapers. They knew that their daughter did not do anything wrong, and they did not acknowledge the illegal arrest. Now their daughter is detained and has held a hunger strike, and she is susceptible to heart attacks from her old heart problems. Jilin City Detention Center has tortured four Falun Gong practitioners to death. The older couple cannot trust the detention center any longer.

The couple said, "No matter how much effort we have to make and how much pain we have to suffer, we must get our good daughter back home. As long as my daughter has not returned home, we will not stop going to the police department to ask for her release. We believe that we can move all people who still have a conscience. We definitely can move heaven and earth. All kindhearted people in the world, please offer your help to rescue our daughter, Ms. Wang Liqiu, and all good people who are illegally detained because of their beliefs. Let justice and goodness prevail."

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Ma Jun, in his forties, is an employee of Bengbu City Filter Factory. He is an honest and kind person. Since the persecution began on July 20, 1999, he has been arrested and his house has been searched several times by agents of the city 610 Office and police department. He has been detained several times at the Bengbu City First Detention Center. On July 20, 2004, Mr. Ma was arrested by policeman Zhong Yongxiang from the Longzihu District Department in Bengbu City when he was on his way to work. Mr. Ma was taken to a brainwashing center. He escaped and had to leave home to avoid being arrested again. In January 2005, he was arrested by the police in Shanghai and taken back to Bengbu City. He was detained in the Bengbu City First Detention Center. The police fabricated "proof" from other fellow practitioners and he was secretly sentenced to four years in prison. He was taken to the Anhui Province Third Prison in Suzhou City. Mr. Ma is steadfast in Falun Gong practice and refuses to accept the brainwashing. He has been tortured in prison nonstop and he is not allowed to be visited by his family members.

Ms. Xu Jinxian, 61, is a senior engineer at the Committee of Huai River Control with the Ministry of Water Resources. At 4:00 p.m. on March 30, 2006, policemen Hu Liuzhu, Zhong Yongxiang, and officers from the city 610 Office broke into her house when she was at home. She was detained and taken to the city brainwashing center. Ms. Xu will not allow herself to be "transformed" nor will she cooperate with the officers. She was again detained at the Bengbu City Detention Center. Six months later, she was sentenced to four years in prison. She was secretly taken to the 3rd Prison of Anhui Province located in Suzhou City and has been detained there ever since.

Ms. Li Junxia Suffers Mental Collapse from Torture at Chenjiaji Brainwashing Center in Wuhan City, Hubei Province

Falun Gong practitioner Li Junxia was persecuted several times by officials of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) due to her firm belief in Falun Gong. In December 2006, agents from the 610 Office in the Jiangan District, Wuhan City detained her in the Chenjiaji Brainwashing Center in the Jiangan District. She was mentally traumatized by the torture she suffered. The following are the details:

Ms. Li Junxia is single and 42 years old. She used to work as an accountant at Dijiao Branch of the Wuhan City Industry and Commercial Bank.

Li Junxia had been chronically ill until 1994, when she was introduced to Falun Gong and recovered soon after. She also changed her bad temper. All of her coworkers acknowledged that she was good at her job and was very diligent and hard-working. Once when a fire broke out in the electrical equipment room at the bank, smoke filled the room. Everyone merely watched; no one dared to get in. Without thinking about her own safety, Ms. Li went into the room, fought the fire herself and saved the bank from incurring severe losses. Her coworkers recognized her physical and mental changes due to practicing Falun Gong.

On July 20, 1999, CCP started the persecution of Falun Gong. The 1st Division of Wuhan City Police Department illegally detained Li Jungxia at the police department sanatorium for refusing to renounce Falun Gong. She was released on January 17, 2000, but the police department authorities still threatened her afterwards, saying, "If you don't give up Falun Gong, others who are associated with you will be implicated. None of your coworkers in the branch will get their bonuses." They also forced her to quit her job. For the sake of her coworkers Li Junxia finally resigned.

On September 18, 2000, Xu Shengquan from the Wuhan Police Department sent Li Junxia to a forced labor camp for a year and a half out of personal spite, because Li Junxia had exposed Xu's corrupt acts. Li Junxia was detained in the 8th Group of Hewang Forced Labor Camp in Wuhan City.

On September 11, 2001, Li Junxia went to visit a practitioner who had just returned home from prison, but she was detained again in a drug rehabilitation center for a year and a half and was locked in a solitary confinement cell for over a year.

In July of 2003, Li Junxia went to her hometown to visit and clarify the truth and was arrested and held at the First Detention Center in Wuhan City. A month later she was transferred to Chenjiaji Brainwashing Center. After she compromised this time, Li Yingjie from the brainwashing center continued to attempt to force her to participate in the "temporary brainwashing class" and forced her to "reform" other detained practitioners. Li Junxia refused to follow the perpetrators' demands and left home to avoid further persecution. She had to sell her house and went to Xiameng City to look for temporary jobs.

While working in Xiameng City, Li Junxia still had fear due to the persecution she experienced. At the end of December of 2006, agents from the "610 Office" in the Jiangan District arrested her again from Xiameng City and sent her to Chenjiaji Brainwashing Center in the Jiangan District in Wuhan City. Brainwashing Center head Li Yingjie along with Gong Lianghan, a collaborator, participated in the persecution.

The persecution methods they used included sleep deprivation, forcing them to stand, and pressuring practitioners to give up their beliefs. They forced everyone to read materials that were slanderous toward Falun Gong, write reports, report on issues and betray other practitioners. If they thought a practitioner had not changed enough, they would accuse this practitioner of faking "reform." So, even if practitioners had agreed to give up Falun Gong, they would still keep persecuting them. They used all these persecution methods on Li Junxia. They tortured her and cursed her and forced her to curse Master Li and Falun Gong. Li Junxia eventually suffered a mental collapse.

After she was mentally traumatized, she often stripped herself and rolled on the floor, and under the instigation of the persecutors, slandered Master Li and Falun Gong. Li Yingjie and Gong Lianghan continued to torture Li Junxia even after she suffered a mental collapse.

At present Li Junxia's family still does not know any details of her situation. Regarding the brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioner Li Junxia by Li Yingjie and Gong Lianghan - we would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG) to investigate this incident and to ask for upright individuals' support and active participation in rescuing Falun Gong practitioner Li Junxia.

Guards in Hulan Prison Torture Falun Gong Practitioners in Confinement Room

Hulan Prison in Heilongjiang Province is one of the major prisons persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Chen Weiqiang, a guard of the "Transformation" Section, has spared no effort in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners since taking this job in 2002. He has given orders to all sections of the prison to set up quotas for "transforming" Falun Gong practitioners. In this period, more than one hundred Falun Gong practitioners have been subjected to persecution. In April 2005, practitioner Liu Yu was tortured to death.

The means used to torture Falun Gong practitioners are extremely brutal. Among several methods used are confinement and wearing instruments of torture. Practitioners Qian Houming, Li Guanghou, Gu Yunpeng, Liu Guoliang, Zhang Ce, Zhao Hongwu, Zhang Zhiguo, Zhang Jian, and Sun Tinghui were detained in the confinement room because they persisted in their belief and protested the persecution.

The confinement room in Hulan Prison is only about four or five square meters in size, with no windows, and an iron door. There is no bed, and only a simple toilet. On the wall are video and audio monitors. A dim light is on all year long. The floor is the bed. On the floor are five iron rings used to immobilize the detainees. It is very cold inside the confinement room. Even if wearing a padded jacket and pants, a normal person would not be able to go longer than a couple of days before suffering from frequent urination.

The detained practitioners in the confinement room are given only two small steamed buns per day, without drinking water. They have to drink the water from the toilet. They have nothing to use for rinsing and washing. At night they are given a very thin quilt for two or three people. That is only enough for matting, but not for covering. They often wake up in the night due to the freezing cold, or they cannot even sleep at all for the whole night. When detained in the confinement room over a long period of time, it is very easy for them to contract all sorts of diseases. When released from there, all of the practitioners were extremely emaciated. It would take them about six months to recover their strength. The detention period in the confinement room for practitioners varies from fifteen days to sixty-eight days.

"Locking to the earth with rings" is a means of torture in which the detainee's hands and feet are handcuffed together first, then a very short steel cable ties the handcuffs and fetter together to a iron ring. In this way the detainee can only stand or lie down while bending. The detainees can not use the restroom by themselves. The police have frequently tortured Falun Gong practitioners with this torture. Normally practitioners are locked up for fifteen days or even longer. Practitioner Zhao Hongwu, Zhang Zhiguo, Zhang Jian, and Sun Tinghui have been tortured with these means.

The "hanging rings" is a more brutal torture means, in which the detainee's hands and feet are handcuffed on four separate rings. The detainee cannot move and needs help with eating, drinking, or using the restroom. Practitioner Zhao Hongwu was tortured like this for seven days. The urine caused his upper legs to become seriously ulcerated. Even under such conditions, the guards continued torturing him with "locking to the earth with rings" for another eighteen days.

The fifteen wardens of Hulan Prison, the director, the associate director, the heads of each section, instructors, and guards are still brutally persecuting Falun Gong practitioners to this day.
