  • Ms. Wang Bo and Mother Liu Shuqin Begin Hunger Strike to Protest Persecution; Father is Critically Ill in Detention Center

Six attorneys representing Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Wang Bo and her parents Mr. Wang Xinzhong and Mrs. Liu Shuqin are openly defending them. The attorneys entered "not guilty" pleas when the "trial" began. Later they submitted open letters three times to higher judicial authorities requesting a public retrial for Ms. Wang Bo's family. Now the international community is paying closer attention to Ms. Wang's case. It's recently been reported that Beijing City Judicial Bureau and Beijing City Police Department are threatening these six attorneys in an attempt to make them quit Ms. Wang's case. Currently Ms. Wang and her parents are illegally detained at two different detention centers in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. Mr. Wang was diagnosed with coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, and his current condition is precarious. More details follow:

Ms. Wang Bo and her mother Liu Shuqin are currently being held at Detention Center Number Two in Shijiazhuang City. In late March 2007 Wang Bo and her mother went on a hunger strike for five days protesting their illegal detention. Mrs. Liu was handcuffed and hung up simply because she practiced the Falun Gong exercises in her cell.

Mr. Wang Xinzhong is being held at the Zhao County Detention Center in Shijiazhuang. He exhibited symptoms of critical illness and was sent to the ER. He was diagnosed with coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. His current blood pressure is 180 over 140 and his life is in danger, but because the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is carrying out its genocidal policy against Falun Gong practitioners, it's tremendously difficult for Mr. Wang to obtain a release for medical treatment.

Recently the officers of Beijing City Judicial Bureau and Beijing City Police Department have threatened the family's attorneys. Despite enormous pressure, they submitted not guilty pleas and openly defended Wang Bo's family at the first trial. Furthermore they've submitted open letters to higher judicial authorities three times requesting a public retrial at the original Chang'an District Court for Ms. Wang's family. After studying the records and interviewing those involved in the case they found that the trial process had seriously violated established legal procedures, the evidence was not sufficient and their case didn't meet the definition of a "crime" in legal terms or in point of fact.

Recently Pei Weihua of the Shijiazhuang City Intermediate Court said that the trial would not be public, and the judges were reluctant to give an explanation. Evidently the CCP intends to continue to employ its devious and underhanded methods to keep Wang Bo's family in prison.

Medical Doctor Mr. Zhao Chenglin Brutally Persecuted in Wafangdian Prison, Liaoning Province

Dr. Zhao Chenglin, a medical doctor in the armed forces in Benxi City was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment for persisting in his belief in Falun Gong and for exposing the truth about the persecution. The prison authorities often torture him while he serves his term in Section 1 of the Wafangdian Prison.

Dr. Zhao Chenglin, 46 years old, is a medical doctor in the Anti-aircraft Gun Regiment. His rank was equal to that of a battalion commander. The Xihu Court sentenced him to 9 years of imprisonment in 2002 for his steadfast practice of Falun Gong, and held him in Section 1 of the Wafangdian Prison.

When Zhao Chenglin's family members went to visit him at the prison on March 19, 2007, a guard lied to them, saying, "Zhao Chenglin didn't follow the rules. He banged his head into a wall and injured himself. He went into coma. After medical attention he regained consciousness, and the authorities have thus stopped permitting family visits." The guard deceived Mr. Zhao's family, intending to hide the facts of the persecution and to escape responsibility.

On April 1, his family went to visit him again. The head of Section 1, officer Liu, enforced a strict set of rules for the visit. If not followed, the authorities would terminate the visit. The family members saw two criminal prisoners bring Dr. Zhao out. He was skin and bones, and pale in his face. His lips were blue and he looked extremely lifeless. His head was dangling, and he had a scar of 6 to 7 cm long on the top of his head. He was supported to sit on a stool. His hands were disabled, and he could only lean his face on the microphone. When his family members asked him what had happened to him, he said in a low and weak voice, "There is nothing wrong with persisting in my belief. They tortured me. The criminal prisoner Zhao Jianjun often beat me under someone's instigation. They don't allow me to wear thick clothes in the winter or sleep with a quilt. They don't allow me to drink hot water and buy daily necessities. They have deprived me of my right to live. I can only start a hunger strike in protest."

To avoid their responsibilities, the prison authorities deceived his family members and lied further: They said they were being responsible for Dr. Zhao Chenglin and would operate on him. But the fact is that they put him into a restricted compartment for over two months to "reform" him with more brutal torture. They don't permit family visits only because they are afraid of the facts being disclosed. Four to five practitioners were locked in small cells, including Zhao Chenglin and She Yue. Zhao Chenglin is on a hunger strike to protest, and is in critical condition now.
