Clarifying the Truth of Falun Gong to Officers at Hong Kong Customs

May 13, 2001 |   Xu Zhenmei

After arriving at the Hong Kong airport on May 6, 2001, I was stopped and refused entry at Customs. Without any explanations, the officers took my passport away and detained me in an office. There, a male officer asked me several personal questions, after which he left, leaving me under the supervision of two female officers. Within a time period of three hours the officer came in and out asking several questions each time, and each time, I was not given a reason for my rejection. I stood up and questioned the three officers in the room and the outer room as to why I was being detained? One of the female officers left and in less than a minute came back with the male officer who had been asking me questions previously.

I asked him the reasons for my detention; he did not respond. I then asked if the detention was because of the fact that I am a Falun Gong practitioner? He did not have the nerve to admit the truth to this question. At this point, I took my Falun Gong T-shirt out of my bag and showed them the words "China: Stop Persecuting Falun Gong" and put it on. I told them firmly that Falun Gong is legal in Hong Kong and asked them, "Which law was my rejection based on?" I then told them that they were violating my human rights. I also asked to call the Chinese Human Rights Center in Hong Kong, so they quickly called the U.S. general consular in Hong Kong, Lu Siqing.

At this point, the male officer started to ask me questions about Falun Gong. I took out some materials about the truth of Falun Gong. When he saw the pictures of tortured Falun Gong practitioners, the officers' face had a grievous look. I could see that these officers still had benevolent hearts. In particular, the several female officers were only in their 20's, and they had very pure, na ve expressions . They knew nothing about Falun Gong; neither did they know why Jiang Zemin feared Falun Gong so much. I realized that I should use this opportunity to let them know about the truth about Falun Gong. I told them about Falun Gong and of the changes I had experienced after learning Falun Gong. The male officer asked me to show them some of the exercises. I demonstrated the first and the fifth set of exercises and explained to them that as Falun Gong practitioners, we practice these exercises and read a book named "Zhuan Falun", trying to attain to the principle of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance", in order to become good people.

I continued to explain to them that simply because there were a large number of practitioners, Jiang Zemin was terrified, and that he began to persecute Falun Gong. I also mentioned to them that since the crackdown, more than 200 practitioners have been persecuted to death. After hearing my words, they all expressed sympathy for Falun Gong. At this time, the U.S. general consular in Hong Kong telephoned and inquired about my situation. When the officer finished speaking with the consular, I again asked for the reason of my rejection. This time they told me that it was indeed because of the fact that I was a Falun Gong practitioner and that they had a list of Falun Gong practitioners. I told them that Falun Gong practitioners are all good people who cultivate themselves according to the principle of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance", yet they were being treated with persecution. I asked, "Where is justice, and where is the embodiment of China's "one country, two systems" policy? Helplessly, the male officer told me that he was only doing his job, and that he had no choice. I seriously told him that by cooperating with Jiang Zemin in his persecution of Falun Gong is in fact helping a tyrant to do evil. He made an awkward smile and had nothing to say. Finally he asked me to sign a "Refusal of Entry Notice". I firmly refused, and he had no choice but to write, "Refuse to sign" on the notice.

The next morning, about a dozen officers forcefully deported me from Hong Kong Customs.
