An Open Letter to the Chinese Ambassador from Canadian NGOs

June 19, 2001 |

Ambassador Ping Mei

515 St. Patrick Street

Ottawa, Ontario, K1N 5H3

Dear Mr. Ambassador:

We, the undersigned non-governmental organizations (NGO's) here in Canada, appeal to you to help release Ying Zhu, a resident of Canada, and Shengli Lin, the husband of Li Jinyu, a Canadian citizen, who have been arrested and jailed just because they practice Falun Gong. We are appalled that your government can allow this to happen in China, since your country's constitution guarantees the freedom of belief to all. We call upon you and the government of China to stop the persecution of Falun Gong.

We are not interested in hearing political rhetoric or propaganda in response to this appeal, Mr. Ambassador. We simply want to see these two innocent Falun Gong practitioners released from their illegal imprisonment unconditionally, and an end brought to the persecution of Falun Gong.

We call upon you, Mr. Ambassador, to do all within your power to release Ying Zhu and Shengli Lin! The people of Canada are ashamed of a country that jails, tortures and imprisons it's citizens for exercising their basic constitutional rights to freedom of belief, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

Please: Free Ying Zhu! Free Shengli Lin!

Thank you.
