A Non-Practitioner's Position: I Defend the Falun Gong Practitioners' Broadcasting of Truth-Clarification Videos on TV (Excerpts)

On March 5, 2002, the Changchun Cable TV Network broadcast Falun Gong videos for about fifty minutes. This event drew a lot of attention from the local people as well as from people around the world. It is an astonishing effort on the part of Falun Gong practitioners to use technical methods to peacefully fight against the persecution of Falun Gong, and to break through the Chinese authorities' information blockade. It has had a far-reaching effect.

A journalist told me that after the broadcast they randomly called Changchun residents in order to gauge public opinion. Few people said they support the authorities' inhumane persecution against Falun Gong. However, some of them complained that the Falun Gong practitioners' showing Falun Gong videos interfered with their watching the scheduled TV programs. Some people abroad posted messages on the Internet claiming that the action of the Falun Gong practitioners violated the legitimate rights of the TV Network, the companies with scheduled commercials to be broadcast during those fifty minutes, and the TV audience. They said, "It is an illegal act even in the United States."

Actually, for those people who complained about the Falun Gong practitioners' actions, the journalist could have followed up with a question, "Then what would you suggest that they do?" With total control of the media, the Jiang regime launched a nation-wide condemnation of Falun Gong similar to what was done during the "Great Cultural Revolution." They confiscated all books, pictures, audios, and videos of Falun Gong. They arrested several Tsinghua University students and threw them into prison just because they used computers to pass along messages about the persecution. They arrest anybody who dares to say loudly in public places, "Falun Dafa is good." Under this circumstance, what would you suggest that those Falun Gong practitioners do when they want to clarify the truth and explain to the public what Falun Gong really is?

The "illegal" only exists in association with the "legal." Only when there is the "legal," could there be the "illegal." You can forbid people to get out through a window only when the door is open. If the door is locked, people will of course have the right to get out through a window. They will even have the right to break through the roof in order to get out. So the accusation of the "illegal action of getting out through a window" can only be valid when the door is open.

In a place where people don't have the most basic human rights, any peaceful methods used to fight for those basic human rights are lawful. Which law are we talking about here? It is the Law of the Universe.
