Ms. Pan Hua and Other Practitioners Suffer from Brutal Persecution in the Harbin Women's Prison in Heilongjiang Province

May 19, 2005 |

(Clearwisdom.net) The following is the letter Ms. Pan Hua wrote from the Harbin Women's Prison to her husband.

"Dear Shihe,

"I wrote you a letter several days ago, but I did not tell you the true situation. The officers in the prison check every letter very strictly. If I told you the truth, the letter would never leave the prison through normal channels. They are very afraid that their criminal acts will be exposed, even though their unlawful deeds in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners are still conveyed to the outside world.

"We practitioners have it very hard in prison. Our lives are at risk. It's quite normal for the prison police to order the criminal inmates to beat us. You can imagine what kinds of tortures we have experienced: having our hands handcuffed behind our backs in painful positions(1), being forced to stand or squat, being suspended with only the tips of our toes touching the ground, the "Big Hang Up"(2), the Tiger Bench, "Being Shackled to the Ground"(3), "Flying Airplane"(4), stabbing with needles, exposure to the blazing sun, and deprivation of water, sleep and use of the restroom.

"We went on hunger strikes to protest the ruthless torture. The prison officials united with criminals to force feed us. It has been said that there are people who died of this in other prison areas. We are trying to get the details.

"Everyday I am living this kind of life. I am now monitored by criminal Li Weiwei. She follows me everywhere, whether I'm eating, brushing my teeth, or going to restroom. I am not allowed to talk to fellow practitioners, and I cannot go to other rooms or go downstairs. Before the New Year, I was not allowed to be visited or to write a letter without permission. My pens and paper were taken away. I am completely deprived of my rights. In addition, the police incite the criminal inmates to handcuff practitioners behind their backs and do the "Big Hang Up." We wanted to appeal against this treatment and asked to see the inspectors of the prison. We wanted to file charges against the police for taking away our basic rights and for torturing us and using criminals to commit crimes against us. After that, they started to watch their behavior. Because the police are the enforcers of the law and they are breaking it, they are afraid of being exposed. We were finally able to meet the "inspectors of the prison." We were allowed to ask for lawyers and to ask family members to appeal for us.

"When next time you come to see me, do not leave without seeing me, because I have the right to be visited. Not allowing me visitors is in violation of the law. Please help me find a lawyer to file charges against their acts and expose their crimes against Falun Gong practitioners to frighten the evil and reduce the persecution. I want to be released unconditionally.

"I know their many criminal acts have been exposed on the Internet. They are frightened, and they are afraid of having their accounts settled. Do not be afraid of them. The evil people are helpless. The righteous will never be overtaken by the evil, and their twisted logic that turns right and wrong upside down cannot last forever!

"The following is a list of policeman responsible for persecuting practitioners:

1. Prison wardens: Liu Zhiqian, Wang Xing
2. Directors of the Prison Administration Section: Xiao Lin, Yang Libin
3. Heads of the first prison area: Cui Hongmei, Xia Fengying
4. Heads of the second prison area: Yang Hua, Zhao Xiling
5. Heads of the eighth prison area: Zheng Jie
6. Heads of the Concentrated prison area: Wang Yali"

Handcuffing to the Back: The practitioners' hands are cuffed behind their backs with a wooden stick placed in between. The torturers use the stick to twist the arms around and apply pressure to the backs, causing the practitioners' arms and shoulders horrendous pain. The handcuffs also cut into the skin.

Big Hang up: There are two forms of this torture: (1) With both hands cuffed behind the back and only the toes touching the ground, one is hung by a rope that is tied to the metal window frames; (2) One hand of a practitioner is cuffed to one bunk bed and the other hand to another bed, and the two beds are pulled in the opposite directions. It is extremely painful as the body is pulled.

Being Shackled to the Ground: The victim is forced to sit on a cold ceramic tile floor with her legs crossed and hands locked in a pair of steel handcuffs that are fastened to the ground, usually for seven consecutive days. The victim is forced to sit on the ground all day long and is only unlocked to go to the toilet. One must lie on the ground to eat because the hands cannot be used. Sometimes the warden will also beat the victim. The victims can no longer walk after being shackled like this for seven days.

Flying an Airplane: The victim is forced to face the wall and bend her head down as far as it will go. Then they pull her hands up and force the practitioner to hold her hands at the highest point against the wall. The practitioner is forced to remain in this exact position for a long time. This torture causes paralysis of the practitioner's feet and severe pain in the arms. It also causes dizziness, lower back, spine and ankle pain, and makes the person tremble.
