Ms. Zhang Peiyun, 60, lives in Zaoziping, Panzhihua City. She has been repeatedly arrested and detained during the last six years.

At noon on July 11, 2005, when Ms. Zhang Peiyun was walking in Zaoziping, she was illegally arrested by two people from the National Security Team and taken to the Panzhihua Police Department. When she arrived at the police station she was handcuffed to a chair. At nightfall, the police covered her head with a bag and took her to Jingu Restaurant, where she was tortured. She was hung up for nine days and nine nights and deprived of sleep. When she closed her eyes, policewoman Tian Ping poured cold water on her chest, which made her clothes constantly wet.

On February 24, 2006, the People’s Court of the East District in Panzhihua tried Ms. Zhang. During the trial it was obvious that Ms. Zhang's appearance had changed while in detention. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, going from 143 pounds to 88 pounds. She was very thin, trembled all over, and was in critical condition. The court did not dare to try her openly, so the trial was held in a conference room at the detention center. The court sentenced her to nine years and six months of imprisonment.
