Ms. Wang Chunlan used to suffer from hepatitis B and insomnia and had a violent temper that led to frequent arguments with her husband. All of her illnesses disappeared within six months after she started practicing Falun Gong in July 1997. She adopted a pleasant demeanor, and her home was no longer a war zone. Her colleagues said she changed into a completely different person.

Twice arrested and taken to brainwashing

After the Communist Party led by Jiang Zemin began persecuting Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, Ms. Wang’s superiors at work twice abducted her, and sent her to brainwashing sessions in March and September 2000. She was forbidden to speak with other people or have contact with the outside. She returned home after the sessions were over.

Going into exile to avoid arrest

610 Office agents continued to monitor her and often harassed her at work, threatening to send her to a labor camp. She left home to avoid the harassment and possible arrest. Her workplace fired her six months later. To survive, she opened a shop and rented a temporary residence, but the 610 Office agents tracked her down and followed her around the clock. They frequently harassed and threatened her at her shop.

Forced labor while in detention center

She spoke with people about Falun Gong and exposed the Party’s lies, even though the persecution continued. On June 19, 2006, 610 Office agents and seven police officers from Wu Baochen, Tao Zhengwu and Yi Huifeng ransacked her home at noon. They took lots of her private belongings and took her to Wenshan County No. 1 Detention Center where she was forced to do manual labor daily until 3 a.m.

Drug injection and other forms of torture

She was transferred to Yunnan Province No. 2 Women’s Prison on January 23, 2007 and held at the Group Drill Division where she was placed under “strict watch.” She was made to sit on a small, hard stool between 6:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily, during which she forbidden to speak with anyone and was forbidden to use a mosquito net at night. Swarms of mosquito bites caused itchy and painful bumps that ulcerated over time. She was tortured this way for two years and five months.

When Ms. Wang once refused to cooperate with the guards, and duty guard Wang Li ordered inmates Li Cai, Liu Yuexin, Yu Zixiang and others to pin her down and inject her with drugs that damage the central nervous system. Afterwards she spiked a persistent fever, was agitated and experienced hallucinations. She also suffered memory loss that has lasted to this day.

After she returned home in 2009, 610 Office continued to monitor her and tapped phone calls made by her and her family. Officials from the street party committee and the community often harassed her family.
