Ms. Zhang Jie, a Falun Gong practitioner from Fushun City, Liaoning Province, was most recently arrested in October 2012, then sentenced to prison. Because she had been tortured, her health was compromised and the prison refused to accept her. However, the detention center has yet to release her.

Arrested and Sentenced

Ms. Zhang was arrested in October 2012 when she was explaining the facts about Falun Gong to people. She was taken to the Heping Police Station in the Wanghua District, then released. However, police officer Zhang Zhongsheng and others arrested her again and took her to the Nangou Detention Center on October 11, 2012.

The arrest was approved on October 24. Ms. Zhang was sentenced to three years in prison. The police took her to the prison several times. Because she had been severely tortured and was in poor condition, the prison kept rejecting her. However, the detention center still refuses to release her.

Ms. Zhang and Her Daughter Persecuted for 10 Years

Because of their belief in Falun Gong, Ms. Zhang and her daughter Ms. Cui Xuejun have been brutally persecuted for ten years. They were arrested, beaten, had money extorted from them, forced to become homeless, and sentenced to prison.

Ms. Zhang and her daughter went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on September 28, 1999. They were arrested by the Qinghe Police Station in Beijing on October 22, 1999 and returned to Fushun City. They were detained for 15 days. Their personal identification cards were also confiscated.

Ms. Cui began a hunger strike to protest the persecution. The police took her to the Second Detention Center. In cold weather, the police forced her to stand outside in her bare feet and shouted profanities at her.

When they were released, Ms. Zhang was taken back by her workplace and Ms. Cui was reinstated by Fushun University. The police extorted 2000 yuan from the family for a “deposit.”

Ms. Cui was arrested on her way to a classmate's home on October 15, 2001. She was taken to the Hedong Police Station. The police beat her because she refused to respond to interrogation. She was then taken to the Wujiabao Forced Labor Camp. She was brought back by her family 20 days later. During this time, her mother had already left home to avoid further persecution.

Ms. Zhang and her daughter, who were forced into homelessness to avoid the persecution, were arrested at their rented accommodations on the night of February 6, 2002. After the arrests were approved on May 24, 2002, they were taken to the Second Detention Center in Fushun City. In middle of August, without notifying the family, the Dongzhou Court tried them, sentencing Ms. Zhang to four years in prison, and Ms. Cui to three years. The detention center transferred them to the Liaoning Women's Prison in December 2002.

In the Liaoning Women's Prison, Ms. Zhang was beaten, deprived of food and sleep, and forced to do slave labor. The police poured cold water on her during the winter. She started a hunger strike to protest the persecution. The police force-fed her, and administered unknown drugs to her. The long term persecution has made Ms. Zhang severely ill and near death.

Ms. Cui was detained in another ward of the prison. Although they were physically close to each other, the mother and daughter were not able to see each other.
