"Who is Really on Trial!" -- Persecution in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province

Sun Baoguo, male, 30 years old, is a graduate student and an elite member
of the Transportation Bank of Taiyuan City. In January 2000, he and his wife
Liu Huijun visited Beijing and wanted to climb up to the Tiananmen Rostrum to
go sightseeing. When he and his wife were interrogated at the checkpoint to
the rostrum, they refused to curse Master Li and Falun Dafa. As a result, Sun
was detained and sentenced to one year in a labor camp. He was released on
January 18, 2001 and detained again on January 22. Since his wife was also
sent to a labor camp in October 2000, their son, who is in middle school, was left at home alone for the New Year.
Liang Hong, male, a critical member at the Agricultural Research Institute of
Shanxi Province, had been detained since July 22, 1999. After a short release
of one month, he was again sent to a labor camp for one and a half years.
Xu Xiangdong, male, is a famous doctor in his 50's. On his way to appeal
for Falun Dafa in the year of 1999, he was arrested before he could enter the
train station. He has been detained twice. One day right before April 25,
2000, he was sentenced to one year in labor camp for no reason and now
he still is being detained.

There are more than 3,600 Dafa practitioners in a county of Shanxi
Province, and Dafa practitioners are in almost every town. One female
practitioner was illegally sentenced to jail for going to appeal for Falun
Dafa. The police put her in a vehicle, hung a big sign board [which is used to
indicate her "crime" and to humiliate her and was a method commonly used during the cultural revolution] around her
neck, and paraded her through the streets. In court, she righteously raised
ten questions to the prosecutor, which caused the whole audience to laugh at
the prosecutor. People who know the truth said, "Who is really on
trial!"
There is another practitioner who has a family of seven members. Five
members in his family were illegally sentenced to jail and detained in four
separate places. In this county, more than 40 Dafa practitioners are now
detained in labor camps.
On March 5, 2001, policemen illegally arrested more than 70 Dafa
practitioners because they had not written the "three types of guarantee
letters" [which are used to indicate a practitioner's giving up of his
or her belief in Falun Dafa, transl.]. Those who had written the guarantee
letters were asked to pay a bail, ranging from a minimum of 2,000-3,000 Yuan
to as much as 10,000 to 20,000 Yuan [a
person's average monthly income is about 100 Yuan in rural China].
Those who were sent to the brainwashing classes, if they refused to be
brainwashed, would be sent to a labor camp. Now over 40 Dafa practitioners are
being detained at the Shanxi Female Prison, and they are not allowed to practice
Dafa exercises. They are forced to work heavily everyday.
Male Dafa practitioners are detained in several places including Yuncheng,
Xindian, and Shanglan Village.
Hou Lijun, male, 28 years old, was detained in a prison in January 2000
after going to appeal. In the prison, the police tried to brainwash him by
giving the common prisoners a promise to reduce their prison terms if they
tortured him to get him to renounce his belief. The common prisoners used cigarettes to
burn him and covered his body with scars. These criminals also took away
the woolen sweaters and pants that his family had sent to him. He
is still detained there. His mother Kang Shuqin, who is also a Dafa
practitioner, has been detained three times. The third time that she was
detained, she was illegally sentenced to one year in labor camp. Only his
father is left to take care of his ailing grandmother. His aunt Kang Shumei is
also a Dafa practitioner. In February 2001, in order to arrest his aunt, the
local police station sent policemen to her home in three police vehicles. His
aunt was forced to leave her home. Her 12-year old son was left at home alone
without anyone to take care of him.
No matter how severely Jiang Zemin [the Chinese President] and his
accomplices have tried to persecute Falun Dafa and the practitioners, no evil
forces can change the unshakeable belief of Dafa practitioners. All Dafa
practitioners, both inside and outside the labor camps or prisons, inspired by
Teacher's latest new articles, will act together to eradicate the evil forces.
It is not far from the day when the Fa rectifies the human world.
Dafa practitioner Yang Binbin, in his 30s, was escorted back to Taiyuan City
after he went to appeal in Tiananmen Square in 2000. One month later he was
released on a bail of 5,000 Yuan. In March 2001, he was sent to the brainwashing
class, where he refused to give up his belief in Falun Dafa and was sentenced to
serve in a labor camp for one and a half years.
There were two practitioners in the brainwashing class who kept practicing
Falun Gong exercises in defiance of the interference from the guards. To
validate Dafa, they started a hunger strike. When the hunger strike went into
the fifth day, the guards became afraid. They asked the cafeteria to make
delicious food for them, but the practitioners refused to eat. Everyday, the two
Dafa practitioners went out with other detainees to do exercises and work as
usual, and they experienced no abnormal reactions in their health. On the fifth
day of the hunger strike, the guards said, "A person would be dead if he or
she didn't eat or drink for seven days; but why are they still perfectly
healthy?" The guards asked other practitioners what to do. The guards were
told that it would be fine if they allowed the two practitioners to practice the
Falun Gong exercises. In the end, the labor camp leaders discussed the issue and
agreed that the two practitioners would be allowed to practice Falun Gong
exercises. Their hunger strike lasted eight days.
Various means were used in the illegal brainwashing class to dissuade Dafa
practitioners from their beliefs. As a punishment, six practitioners in the
class were ordered to stand without moving, for as long as 12 hours without sleep. All these
tortures failed to change the practitioners' firm belief in Dafa, and the
persecutors had no other way but to allow them to practice the Falun Gong
exercises. (It is said that if Dafa practitioners can't be brainwashed in the
class within three months, they will be sent to labor camps or sentenced to
prison). Sixty-three year-old Zhang Lanxiang and 62 year-old Liu Zhaoming were
expelled from the XX party for their belief in Falun Dafa. Zhang refused to be
brainwashed in the class, and she also helped some practitioners who were not
very firm in their belief to become determined in Dafa. When the guards found
this out, they illegally made a decision to send Zhang to a labor camp for three
years.
