1. [Chengdu City, Sichuan Province] Police Send Practitioner Tang Hongmei to Labor Camp for "Acting Suspiciously"

Chengdu Dafa practitioner Tang Hongmei was recently sentenced to one year in the Nanmushi Female Labor Camp in Zizhong City. She was arrested at her sister's home on May 14, 2001. Her family members went to the police and asked them for the legal basis of her one-year sentence. The police could not produce any evidence, but they said that she was "acting suspiciously." How sad is it when the police can arrest and sentence people to jail just for "acting suspiciously!"

A practitioner's friend works for an intelligence agency in charge of collecting and processing information on Falun Gong. This friend sighed and said after finding out about this case, "How much longer can Jiang Zemin's reign last?"

2. [Wuhan City, Hubei Province] Wuhan First Detention Center Brutally Tortures Dafa Practitioners

The Wuhan First Detention Center strictly forbids practitioners from doing the Falun Gong exercises, and those who defy this order are handcuffed to the same spot for up to fifty days. It has been extremely hot in Wuhan City recently, and the temperature indoors is even higher. Partly because practitioners cannot perform the Falun Gong exercises, their physical condition has deteriorated greatly.

3. [Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province] The Illegal Actions of the Guangzhou Intermediate Court

On August 6, 2001, the Guangzhou Intermediate Court held a public trial for Dafa practitioners. Practitioner Yang Bangquan's family was informed that two or three family members were allowed to attend the trial.

At 9:00 AM on August 6, Yang's mother called court lawyer Li Long about the procedure for the attending the trial. Li said that she only needed to come to the court to meet with Liu Zhixiang, another lawyer, before 2:30 PM and apply for a permit. Li also said that two to three family members could attend the trial. So Yang's family came to the courthouse at around 2:00 PM to apply for the permit. However, Li and Liu said that Falun Gong practitioners' families are not allowed to attend the hearing. Yang's family argued with them. Li and Liu said that they had made a mistake, and that trials of Falun Gong practitioners are not open to the public. Yang's family learned later that they sentenced two practitioners to jail that morning.

4. [Nongan County, Jilin Province] Detention Center Swindles Nearly 600,000 Yuan from Practitioners

There are many Dafa practitioners in Nongan County. Since July 20, 1999, about one thousand practitioners have gone to Beijing to appeal, clarifying the truth of Falun Gong and validating Dafa. As a result, they were detained and tortured in the detention center.

Following Jiang Zemin's instruction of "breaking them financially," the detention center charged practitioners abnormally high prices for food. They charged 23.25 Yuan [Chinese currency, the average income of urban worker is 500 Yuan] each day. The food was usually bug-riddled corn pancakes and corn stubble gruel. In comparison, they only charged other inmates 13.50 Yuan a day. Since 1999, around one thousand practitioners have been held in the detention center for an average period of twenty-five days. A simple calculation shows that the detention center has overcharged practitioners for 587,750 Yuan. Meanwhile, the head of the detention center, Lou Shaojun, has personally tortured and cursed Dafa practitioners.

5. [Tianjin City] 610 Office Arrests Dafa Practitioners

The police departments and 610 offices [An office created by the government to deal specifically with issues related to Falun Gong] from various areas of Tianjin City have started another wave of arrests. Many practitioners from the Tanggu, Dagang, Jinnan, Baodi, Ninghe and Wuqin districts have been arrested for refusing to give up practicing Falun Gong.

When officers from the 610 office asked practitioner Guo Jianxuan from the Dagang Oil Field Area if he practiced Falun Gong , Guo answered, "Yes!" He was then arrested and sent to the Dagang Detention center, leaving his wife and five-year-old child at home.

The Gangxi Police Substation arrested Dafa practitioners Li Quangao, Liu Lanying, Li Chong, and Zheng Wanzhang from the Dagang Oil Field Area on July 13. They are currently being detained in the Dagang Detention Center.

It was reported that every police station, security department in every work unit, 610 office and residence committee in the Dagang Oil Field Area are monitoring Dafa practitioners. They are following the practitioners, tapping their telephones, and forcing practitioners' neighbors to watch them. They are also stressing the control of the Internet.

Dafa practitioners Chu Jidong, Huang Min, and Li Haigang from the Dagang Oil Field Area were sentenced to labor camps for appealing in Beijing. They are being detained in the Shuangkou Labor Camp in Tianjin City. Chu and Huang's detention period is overdue, but they still have not been released yet.

Dafa practitioner Zhao Binhong has been detained in the Banqiao Female Labor Camp in Dagang District, suffering all kinds of tortures. She has been imprisoned for three months past her sentence, but they still refuse to release her. Her husband works in the oil well, so nobody is looking after their child, an elementary school student, during the day.

We hope that the kindhearted people of the world can pay attention to the plight of these practitioners and help them.

6. [Dalian City, Liaoning Province] Police Arrest Dafa Practitioners and Ransack Their Homes

On August 7, police arrested Dafa practitioners Xue Jun, Zhang Huidong, and another female practitioner and then proceeded to ransack Xue's home. They confiscated three desktop computers with CD writers, a laptop, two laser printers, nearly one thousand VCDs, and speakers. The police are still waiting in Xue's home hoping to arrest more Dafa practitioners.

7. [Mainland China] My Family's Encouraging Changes

My father was opposed to us cultivating Falun Dafa before July 22, 1999, because he thought that Falun Gong was only for elderly people. However, after the self-immolation incident was reported by Chinese government, he said that it was a staged performance and said to us, "You should do whatever you think is right." I gave him some truth-clarifying materials and asked him to distribute them to local practitioners. He promised to do so and asked me for Teacher's new articles to read.

My nephew is nine years old and does not practice Falun Gong. When his schoolteacher asked students to write down their relatives' names who are Falun Gong practitioners, he refused. He also asked his father why the man who set himself on fire did not double-cross his legs like his mother does when she practices. When we read Teacher's book before, he never listened to us. However, after we sent forth righteous thoughts, he started to listen to us telling other children's cultivation stories and also asked us to read Zhuan Falun to him.

My relatives said that when he chatted with his colleagues, many of them openly denounced Jiang Zemin.

8. [Hailar City, Inner Mongolian] Recent News Items from Inner Mongolia

On April 30, 2001, Li Yaoguo from the Hulunbeier Internal Audit Office was arrested while clarifying the truth of Falun Gong, leaving his baby, who is less than one year old, at home. The management of the Hulunbeier Internal Audit Office then forced everybody to write statements denouncing Dafa.

From May 28 to May 30, 2001, officials from the Hulunbeier Propaganda Department held a three-day photo exhibit to slander Dafa.

Around July 22, 2001, Dafa practitioners hung many banners along the main street of the city.

The secretary of the party committee of the Xishan State Grain Reservoir was arrested for financial crimes. This work unit used to persecute Dafa practitioners, and one employee was sentenced to jail for practicing Falun Gong.

9. [Guizhou Province] Persecution of Falun Dafa Practitioners

Falun Dafa practitioner Zhang Juying from Guizhou Province was illegally detained for 15 days for going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in October 1999. Her workplace punished her by reducing her salary to a minimum, barely enough to cover daily expenses. She was arrested again in November 2000 for distributing Falun Gong literature and illegally detained for 45 days in Nanming District Detention Center in Guiyang City. Later she was bailed out. In March 2000, Nanming District ran a brainwashing class for Falun Dafa practitioners. Zhang refused to attend. The authorities tried to take her by force, but Zhang resisted firmly, leading her persecutors to resent her.

In June 2001, officers from the Shachong Street Police Station in Nanming District went to Zhang's workplace, handcuffed her, and took her away without notifying her supervisor or family. They sent her directly to Zhongba Women's Labor Camp in Guizhou Province. Her husband (a non-practitioner) went to the police station to ask for an explanation. The deputy commanding officer Yao Yong didn't have a good reason, so he threatened, "Stop it or I will send your daughter to the labor camp, too." Zhang's daughter is also a practitioner. Zhang started a hunger strike on arrival her first day in the labor camp, taking neither food nor water. As a result, she was force fed and tortured. This occurred sometime in the first half of June 2001.

Ye Shaoxue, his wife Huang Huaying, son Ye Heping and daughter Ye Jingsong are all practitioners. The son was illegally sentenced to three years in a labor camp for appealing for Falun Gong in Beijing in November 1999, and he is currently being held in Zhongba Labor Camp of Guizhou Province. Their house has been ransacked many times. The police detained Huang for 15 days for bringing Falun Gong literature to practitioners in the labor camp. A few days after her release, four people from the police station and the residents' committee broke into her house and declared she would be sentenced to three years in labor camp. They tried to take her away by force, but Huang jumped from the third floor and ran off. They took her daughter to the police station and didn't release her until dawn. They threatened to let the family see the "power of proletarian dictatorship." In order to avoid their illegal arrest, Ye Shaoxue and his daughter had no choice but to leave their home, literally forced into homelessness. The police station sent some people to watch their home and arrest anyone who came to visit. They forced Ye's nephew (non-practitioner) and tenants to go out to find Ye and his family. Had they refused, the tenants would not have been allowed to live there anymore and the house would have been closed down. In addition, the tenants were threatened with three years in jail.

10. [Yantai, Shandong Province] Indestructible Falun Dafa Practitioners

The Public Security Bureau in Yantai, Shandong Province, its subordinate branches, police stations, offices in different districts and detention centers collude with each other in the persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners. Police squads specially trained to work on big criminal cases are used against Falun Dafa practitioners. They adopt ruthless methods and have injured many practitioners.

More than ten people led by Vice Commanding Officer Wang Fuli and Policeman Zhao Zhiyi in Baishi Street Police Station of Zhigang District pried open the door and broke into the house of Sun Shuqin. They used force to carry her and her daughter Liang Yan away from home at the midnight hour. The mother and daughter started a hunger strike. Within thirty days, they had been taken to many different places including the police station, the detention center, the labor camp and the hospital. The police tried twice to send Liang Yan to Wang Village Labor Camp in Zibo and they tried to send Sun Shuqin once, but all of their efforts were unsuccessful because of their poor health as a result of their hunger strike.

Liang Yan was sent to the hospital emergency ward three times. The fourth time she was taken for examination and treatment for weak breathing. She was force-fed many times at the detention center, resulting in the loss of much pus-filled blood. Xu Ming, a vicious guard once said, "If we don't show her we're tough, she won't change her mind. We have plenty of ways: handcuffs, foot shackles, and tying her to the bed board. If a Falun Gong practitioner is tortured to death, we certainly won't be punished, and no one will speak out for them. We won't let them have a life, but we won't let them die, either."

The mother and the daughter were both carried away from their home and carried back. Their neighbors can testify to that. According to an eyewitness, when Liang Yan was carried home by four policemen, she was curled up under a torn blanket, as skinny as a skeleton. Many kind-hearted people shed tears and said, "Falun Gong practitioners are so strong. They'd rather die than give in."

11. [Yantai, Shandong Province] Police Illegally Arrest Over 30 Practitioners

During the Second International Fair in the middle of June, the police in Yantai City frenziedly arrested Dafa practitioners. The following is a partial list of over 30 kidnapped practitioners: Wang Zhixin, Liu Zhenxia, Zhan Gongcheng, Li Zegang, his wife and his sister Li Yuyan, Song Minghao, Sun Shuqin, Liang Yan, Gao Xia, Yin Aihua, Liu Qiuhong, and Wang Xingying. Sun Shuqin and her daughter Liang Yan refused to follow the orders of the police and were tortured until they were very frail. They were released a month later. Zhan Chenggong failed a physical examination and was sent back from a labor camp to the Yantai Detention Center where he is still being held. The rest of the practitioners have all been illegally sentenced to labor camps. Three groups of practitioners were sent to labor camps in succession within one month. As soon as practitioners are arrested, they are sent to labor camps without due process of law.

The perpetrators have changed their strategy. They do not detain practitioners in local detention centers anymore; rather, they send them to labor camps immediately. For instance, practitioner Liu Qiuhong was arrested one evening and sent to labor camp the next morning.

Directing Officer Yu Jianshu in Section One in Zhigang Branch of Yantai City Public Security Bureau is a ruffian who has persecuted many Falun Dafa practitioners over the past two years. He gives the orders as to who should be arrested. He is also directly involved with the vicious acts and brainwashing classes of the "610 Office" and "428 Office."

12. [Benxi, Liaoning Province] Weining Labor Camp Tortures Falun Dafa Practitioners

Weining Labor Camp in Benxi, Liaoning Province has used all kinds of cruel methods to persecute Falun Dafa practitioners. Detained practitioners who refuse to renounce Falun Gong are put in a "strict group" where the guards carry out severe acts of torture. They have resorted to many inhumane methods. For example, they make practitioners sit in a chair all day long without moving or talking. Any movement will incur beating and kicking. Practitioners are allowed to use the bathroom only twice a day. If one complains, they will accuse him of violating the rules and regulations and put him in a "stretching room" where one's arms and legs are spread and tied up. Once, Song Yuegang and Zhao Chenglin (see "[Benxi City, Liaoning Province] Police Arrest Falun Dafa Practitioners using Contemptible Means" in Latest News from China, 05/31/01, on Clearwisdom.net) tried to escape persecution and were severely beaten by the inmates monitoring them and three officers from the Management Office: Liang, Li Qiang and Dong Qiang. They were joined by Liu Huiming, Wang Yi, Zhao Dawei, Zhang Decai, and Jiao Fanghe. The two practitioners were tied up and hung by their arms and legs, leaving their bodies hanging in the air. The police used an electronic baton on them that discharged 18,000 volts, then kicked and punched them. Their faces were distorted and covered with blood. They were tortured everyday. Song Yuegang was hung in the "stretching room" for 15 days and Zhao Chenglin for 10 days. Since Wang Jicai's story was posted on the web, the evil has been somewhat restrained. At present, Song Yuegang, Zhao Chenglin, and Xu Fengsheng are still being tortured. Wang Jicai was hurt and is now healing from the wounds in a drug rehabilitation center (translator's note: rehabilitation centers have been used to detain practitioners since the persecution began). The officials are trying hard to stop news from leaking out because what they have done violates the law and they are afraid of being exposed to the public.

It is said that the brainwashing classes in Benxi City started on August 7 and will be held until October.

13. [Hegang, Heilongjiang Province] Guards and Officers in Hegang Detention Center Torture Falun Dafa Practitioners

Luo, Head of Hegang No.1 Detention Center, and Yu Lei, one of the guards, sent 3 female Falun Dafa practitioners who had been on a hunger strike for 4 days to the torture room and tortured them from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The practitioners' names are Gong Guihua, Bai Guixia and Xu Yuegui. Yu Lei also kicked the practitioners while saying, "You are tough." Their muscles were severely bruised and hurt. Finally, Yu was afraid to take responsibility for injuring them and said, "Take medicine and practice Falun Gong at the same time. You will heal quickly."

Many Falun Dafa practitioners are shown a certificate stating that their detention period will be only 15 days. But the actual length of the average illegal detention is much longer than that, with the longest being 10 months. Practitioners who are released are fined 1,000 to 3,000 Yuan. (Translator's note: the average monthly income of an urban worker is 500 Yuan.) It is said that the guards have extorted over 200,000 Yuan from Dafa practitioners to cover "food expenses."

The labor camp brutally persecutes Dafa practitioners. Chief officer of Team Three, Wang Fugui, together with Deputy Chief Qi Yanwei and Yang Xiaochun, directed other inmates to beat Falun Dafa practitioners. Anyone who does not give in will receive heavy beating and kicking. They beat them with clubs everyday. Later we learned that it was because of instructions from the Party Secretary of the Politics and Law Committee, Yang Yuguang and Vice Director of City Public Security Bureau, Zhang Chunqing, "If an inmate beats Dafa practitioners into giving up practicing Falun Gong, his service term can be reduced." In fact, they are bribing the inmates to commit further crimes for which they will one day receive their due retribution.

14. [China] Those Slandering Falun Dafa and Framing Practitioners Meet Retribution

Li, a neighbor of a Falun Dafa practitioner, believed the propaganda in the newspapers and TV and harbored hatred towards Falun Dafa practitioners. He often repeated the slander he'd heard on TV around the neighborhood. He also followed practitioners around and reported on them to the residents' committee. Not long ago, he found blood in his urine and has discovered that he has prostate cancer. He has spent more than 10,000 Yuan for surgery. He himself realized that it might be retribution for his actions against Falun Dafa. He does not dare to tell others that he has cancer. He is much more restrained now.
