When Jiang arrived in Chicago, several hundred Falun Gong practitioners peacefully protested outside the Chinese Consulate, and over one thousand practitioners appealed peacefully outside the hotel where Jiang was staying.

When an older lady came to the Consulate to apply for a visa, and she saw so many people of all ages meditating quietly to protest the brutal persecution, she stopped and raised her thumb and said, "Great! Absolutely non-violent." She talked to the practitioners for a long time. She said she went back to China often and knew a lot about the corruption among Chinese government officials. She expressed her sympathy to Falun Gong practitioners and said, "What's wrong with practicing (Falun Gong)? I know many people with master's and doctorate's degrees practice these exercises, so it must be something beneficial. Otherwise so many people would not continue practicing it under such persecution." When she saw the truck about Jiang selling off Chinese land, she was surprised and said angrily, "Why didn't I hear any thing about this before?"
