Mr. Wolfgang Kaleck is a German lawyer based in Berlin. He is famous for representing German victims who were persecuted by the Argentinean military dictator Pinochet. He has been entrusted by Falun Gong practitioners to file a lawsuit with the Supreme Court against Jiang Zemin and other Chinese leaders on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. The following is an excerpt from a report by RFA reporter Tian Yi's interview with Mr. Kaleck.

Mr. Kaleck being interviewed

On November the 20, 2001, thirty-six western practitioners staged a peaceful appeal for the freedom of Falun Gong practitioners on Tiananmen Square in China. They were violently arrested and deported. Today, two years after the incident, some of the German Falun Gong practitioners who participated in the appeal filed a lawsuit accusing former Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, and other Chinese leaders who should take responsibility for the persecution of Falun Gong, on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and cruel torture. They entrusted renowned German lawyer Mr. Wolfgang Kaleck with this case and Mr. Kaleck was interviewed by a reporter from RFA.

Mr. Kaleck commented: I would like to briefly introduce the case to the audience in China. On November the 21, 2003, we used the names of more than 40 victims to file a lawsuit with the German Supreme Court in Karlsruhe against the former president of China, Jiang Zemin, and other leaders who are responsible for this persecution. The reason for this criminal lawsuit is the initiation of a cruel persecution against Falun Gong practitioners between 1999 and 2003. The persecution, which has persisted until today, has abused human rights and violated domestic laws and international conventions. I hope the Supreme Court can endorse this lawsuit and launch an investigation.

A Chinese legal scholar from Zhejiang University explained the lawsuit filed by Mr. Kaleck to the reporter:

The plaintiffs are 44 victims, including more than ten Germans. The 90-page submission outlined the personal experiences of 15 victims who currently live outside the Chinese mainland and 800 plus torture cases that have resulted in death. Mr. Kaleck thinks the importance of this case is similar to that of the lawsuit against Augusto Pinochet and the on-going case against former Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milosevic.

The above was a report from Radio Free Asia's correspondent in Germany Tian Yi.
