Some Belated Facts about the Torture Death of Dafa Practitioner Ms. Yang Mei from Cangzhou City, Hebei Province

May12, 2003

(Clearwisdom Net) Miss Yang Mei was a staff member for the Cangzhou City Xiao Wangzhuang Credit Union in Hebei Province. She died in 2001 at Cangzhou City's Detention Center No. 1 when she was just 23 years old.

On around July 20th, 1999, when the persecution against Falun Gong started, Yang Mei went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa, and was later taken back by her work supervisors and local police officers. The chief of her work unit ordered her family to submit 4,000 Yuan to them, as travel expense reimbursement for going to Beijing to pick her up. This amount is equivalent to eight months of salary for an average urban worker in China. After she returned, the work unit requested Yang Mei to write an apology letter. They did not allow her to take time off from work, and forced her to take night shifts, month after month. They also reduced her salary. Soon, they only paid her a "living fee" of 200 Yuan per month but later, even this living fee was no longer paid to her. Chief Liu Zhenliang often chastised Yang Mei in front of others, forbade others to have close contact with her, and formed an environment to isolate Yang Mei.

In June 2001, Liu Zhenliang attempted to send Yang Mei to the police station, but the police station did not accept her. Liu then attempted to send her to the Suburban Credit Unions Association, which was the head office for Liu's unit. The chief of this supervisory unit told Yang Mei to return to work, but without being able to take any time off. Liu Zhenliang said, "No, let her go back home to write an apology letter to me." Since then, Yang Mei's has been deprived of her job and forced to stay at home.

At 8:00 p.m. one night, when Yang Mei and her parents were watching TV, Liu Zhenliang called to inquire what Yang was doing. The following days, Yang was forced to leave home to escape from the authorities because the police constantly came to her home. Several days later she was detained in the No. 2 Detention Center, where she died three months later. Yang Mei was detained in solitary confinement when she died, and she was forced to lie on a "Dead Person's Bed,"* with her hands and feet cuffed. The force-feeding tube that was pulled out of her mouth was totally black.

After her death, the authorities did not allow her family to hold a funeral, nor did they allow Yang Mei's colleagues to extend their condolences. Her body was put in the morgue of the City Hospital and was not allowed to be visited unless with an approval letter from the police department. The Yang's family's telephone was tapped, and plainclothes policemen were everywhere, including the residential compound where the Yang's family lived. Everyone had to register upon entering and exiting that area. They also did not allow the autopsy to be carried out unless the detention center designated the medical examiner, instead of using the services of the one appointed by the Yang's family. Several days later, the body was forcibly taken away to be cremated.

* "Dead Person's Bed" is a type of torture method. The four limbs of the practitioner are stretched out and tied to the four corners of an icy-cold metal bed. The practitioner cannot move at all, neither is s/he allowed to get up to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom. This treatment will last from several hours up to more than two weeks.
