Dear Mr. Ambassador:

We write to you regarding the arrest of Dr. Charles Li, an American citizen, by the Chinese police on January 22, 2003. Many of the constituents in our legistlative district share our concern that Dr. Li may suffer the same fate of the many Falun Gong practitioners who have been arrested, detained, and tortured in China. As you know and has been confirmed by the United States Department of State and well as human rights groups, such as Amnesty International, hundreds of these individuals have been killed as a result of brutality in prisons, labor camps and mental hospitals.

Falun Gong, as we understand it, is a traditional, peaceful cultivation and practice system for mind and body. It espouses the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, yet we have been told that the Chinese government considers it a threat to its existence, and is trying to eliminate its followers.

With all due respect, we urge you to look into the arrest and the ongoing treatment of Dr. Charles Li and to take whatever steps are necessary to help secure his release. We appreciate your attention to this critical issue and ask for a prompt response.
