The Pre-Sentence Experiences of a Female Engineer in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province
(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Zhang Yanrong, 41, was employed by the Chengdu
Airplane Industry Group as a general craft shop engineer. For practicing Falun
Gong, Ms. Zhang was sentenced to nine years imprisonment in February 2003. In the evening of September 29, 2002 Zhang Yanrong was abducted and sent to
Pi County Detention Center by the police of the Jinniu branch of Chengdu Police
Department. The police did not inform her family members. The week that her case
was brought to court, she was subjected to various tortures. She was not allowed
to sleep, and several dozen policemen took turns interrogating her, constantly
shining glaring lights in her face. She was handcuffed very tightly, and the
handcuffs cut deep into her flesh. The police did not allow her to close her eyes, they even clamored, "We
will beat you till your brain stops working." Zhang Yanrong had suffered from a stroke, and was partially paralyzed prior
to practicing Falun Gong. After beginning to practice, her health was gradually
restored. She became a very dedicated practitioner. Under the torture, however,
she was coerced into accepting evidence that was fabricated by police. The policy issued by the Ministry of Public Security entitled "Process
and Procedures for Handling Administrative Cases by Public Security
Agencies" strictly prohibits extortion of confessions by torture, or
collection of evidence using coercive or threatening means. The evidence
obtained by such illegal methods is not valid. This policy took effect on January 1, 2004 but the Chengdu Jin Niuqu Court
completely ignored this fact. It used this fake confession, obtained by torture,
to decide its verdict. (See also the March 14, 2004 Clearwisdom.net article: Ms.
