Correspondent Receives Walkley Award for a Report on Falun Gong

(Clearwisdom.net) According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the Herald's China correspondent, Hamish MacDonald, won a Walkley Award last night (December 1) for his article on Falun Gong published in October 2004.

The award-winning report was entitled, "What's Wrong with Falun Gong." Reportedly, judges praised his "elegant and human account of the horrors inflicted on a persecuted minority."

The Walkley Award is equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize of the United States. The goal of the annual Walkley Awards is to recognize excellence in Australian journalism across all media. Established in 1956, a gala ceremony of the 50th Annual Walkely Awards was held in Sydney on December 1.

Risking offending the Chinese Communist Authority, Hamish sent his first-hand report from Beijing. The article was published as a front-page article by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age of the Australian Associated Press. The long article depicted the story of Tang Yiwen, a young practitioner from southern China. For her unyielding belief in Falun Dafa, Ms. Tang was sent to forced labor camps and brainwashing centers where she was subject to cruel torture. The report is the first article by the Australian mainstream media which objectively reported the persecution in depth.

The article objectively described the brutal torture and suppression of practitioners detained in forced labor camps and brainwashing centers. It thus exposed the lies of the Chinese media controlled by Jiang Zemin and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It helped readers to see the truth of this widespread genocide and to understand and support practitioners' efforts in resisting the persecution and clarifying the truth.
