A Former 610 Office Staffer Regains His Conscience

I am a Falun Gong practitioner in Northeastern China. On March 20, 2005, on my way to a relative's home, I met a 610 Office staff member who had been one of those in charge of the persecution of Falun Gong at our company. As soon as he saw me, he greeted me and said that he had already quit that position and requested a transfer because he didn't think he could do that sordid job any longer.

He added that through the five years of persecution that he had witnessed, all of the arrested practitioners had been good people who observed public order, abided by the law and worked hard without complaint or desire for personal gain or fame. However, the authorities jailed these good people for persecution in labor camps, detention centers, psychiatric hospitals and brainwashing centers. So many corrupt officials, including the plant managers, had divided and weakened society by making so many workers lose their jobs, only to face hunger and the lack of means to pay for medical care or their children's schooling. Although the workers complained to the superior level, the law never punished any of those corrupt officials.

Talking about the Nine Commentaries on the Chinese Communist Party, the former 610 Office staffer said, "It is indeed excellently written, morally right and accurate. It speaks to the hearts of the people. Now I fully understand why there are no human rights in China. Those living under dictatorships are good people and poor people. China's laws are only for protecting corrupt officials and the Party's VIPs. The CCP is still deceiving the people, but I will no longer be deceived."

In his indignation, he concluded, "A new China will be born, but not until the Party is finally eliminated."

During the Lunar New Year 2005 in my hometown, I happened to come across a former schoolmate of mine, who is now a professor at the Beijing Military Police College. Talking about the Party, a student with him claimed, "The Party is not bad, but its members are finished."

Upon hearing this, the professor said, "The Party has become completely corrupt and degenerate. I was forced to join it when I became a graduate student. Even though the benefit for my joining is pretty good now, I still feel suffocated in this country that refuses to allow democracy. We have been brainwashed by the Party and, even realizing that now, we still can't find our true identity."

A county school in Hebei Province requires students of self-directed study to be present in the classroom at 5:30 every morning. The students first collect some of the flyers that have been put there by Falun Gong practitioners, and then a student reads one of them aloud for the others. The teacher in charge of the class tacitly condones this activity. As a result, many students there have come to realize the truth about Falun Gong.
