Right Hon. Paul Martin
Prime Minister of Canada
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6
Dear Prime Minister,
I wish to express my concerns about the upcoming visit of
President Hu Jintao and urge you to publicly express to the visiting leader of
China, the Canadian public's concern over the continuing violations of human
rights, including persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. This has been
documented by the UN and many human rights organizations. The incarceration and
torture of hundreds of thousands of people and the estimated death of 2780 Falun
Gong practitioners are gravely concerning. Canada, as a democracy society must
insure that these violations are stopped and all human rights upheld.
I also draw to your attention to help release the 18
practitioners (list attached) with Canadian ties, who are being held illegally
in various detention centers and labour camps in China.
In addition, Canada must protect the sovereignty of our
country in light of reports of espionage, hate incitement, intimidation, and
harassment from Chinese agents and consular officials against Falun Gong
practitioners right here in Canada.
It is important that President Hu realizes that Canada
genuinely respects justice, democracy and supports human rights and that this is
the underpinning to sustain long-term stability and prosperity in our trade and
economic partnership with China.
I believe Canada's responsibility is clear and our voice is
critical in bringing an end to systemic persecution in China.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Libby Davies, M.P.
