Belgium: De Morgen Reports on Organ Harvesting from Living Falun Gong Practitioners in China

(Clearwisdom.net) On the 14th of July, the Belgian newspaper De Morgen published an article introducing, in detail, the independent investigation report by former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia Pacific Affairs David Kilgour and respected human rights lawyer David Matas. The report looked into the organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners by the Chinese Communist regime. De Morgen reported that Matas and Kilgour concluded that detained Falun Gong practitioners are being killed in China so that their organs can be used in expensive organ transplantations. The newspaper also cited the report by Vice President of the European Parliament Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott and said that Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott thinks that the United Nations should investigate the allegations of organ harvesting from living people in China. If the allegations prove to be true, the 2008 Olympic games should not be held in China.

According to De Morgen, the Chinese Communist regime’s brutal persecution of Falun Gong that started in July 1999 is not news any more. During the past few years, tens of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners detained in the forced labour camps have disappeared. Many of them haven’t gone through any legal procedure other than being detained by the administration. It is also commonly known that organs have been harvested from executed prisoners for lucrative profits. However, in their report the two Canadians concluded that allegations that Falun Gong practitioners are being killed for their organs and then cremated to destroy the evidence are true.

The De Morgen article said that Matas and Kilgour’s report used the testimony of a witness concerning Sujiatun Hospital in Shenyang City. Former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia Pacific Affairs David Kilgour interviewed this female witness on the 20th of May this year. The witness said: "Between the end of 2001 and October 2003, my husband took corneas from 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners." "After he finished taking the corneas, other doctors then took the kidneys, livers and other organs from these Falun Gong practitioners. The victims were injected with a very strong drug that would make their hearts weakened while other important organs still function normally. After the organs were taken, and the victims were cremated. According to estimations by my husband and his colleagues, this hospital killed between three and four thousand people."

Matas and Kilgour’s report also used the investigation carried out by a group of overseas Chinese investigators. These investigators pretended to be patients and called various labor camps and hospitals asking if they provided organs from Falun Gong practitioners. Because Falun Gong practitioners lead healthy lives and don't smoke or drink alcohol, and they do regular Falun Gong exercises that have many health benefits, their organs are usually extremely healthy. Most organizations investigated answered in the affirmative and claimed that the waiting time for organs is very short. If a patient has money, the operation could be performed immediately. The De Morgen article said that similar evidence was also taken from Falun Gong practitioners who had been detained. These practitioners testified that, during their detention, their blood and organs were checked many times.

According to the De Morgen article, Vice President of the European Parliament Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott said: "This leads me to suspect that China has a depository of organs from living people. As soon as their organs can be sold at a good price, they will be killed." McMillan-Scott visited Beijing for three days in May this year. He met Cao Dong, a Falun Gong practitioner from Beijing. Cao Dong personally witnessed practitioners being killed. McMillan-Scott said: "This was related to a friend of Cao’s who was detained. One evening, he was taken away. When Cao saw him again, he was dead. His body showed evidence of being operated on." The article continued, saying that the second day after meeting the Vice President of the European Parliament, Cao Dong was arrested. Despite McMillan-Scott’s many formal protests, Cao is still detained.

The De Morgen article said that Kilgour and Matas pointed out in their report that obtaining evidence of these crimes is very difficult. There were no survivors and few direct witnesses. Kilgour and Matas need visas to go to China to carry out further investigation, but the Chinese Embassy has refused their applications. Aside from investigations by telephone and a witness, their reported cited China’s public data of the number of executions and organ transplantations.
