Elderly Couple Ms. Zhang Zongsu and Mr. Li Guocai Illegally Imprisoned for Nine Months

After Dafa disciples Ms. Zhang Zongsu and Mr. Li Guocai were illegally arrested on April 26, 2007, the elderly couple was imprisoned in Tangshan First Detention Center until October 20 of last year. The Lubai Court in Tangshan sentenced Ms. Zhang to seven years and Mr. Li to four years. Both of them have appealed, but have not been heard of since. Ms. Zhang had a cerebral hemorrhage and there were problems with her heart and blood sugar. Mr. Li was always troubled by a hernia. However, Tangshan Detention Center authorities did not allow their family members to visit them.

Ms. Zhang developed symptoms of heart disease after she was in detention. She once went on a hunger strike for close to a month to protest the unlawful detention. Later on, she was force-fed twice each day. The Chinese Communist Party even charges 50 yuan for each forced-feeding. The police have carried out many cruel tortures on her, including beating her mercilessly, depriving her of sleep, forcing her to wear handcuffs and shackles, and force-feeding her, among other abuses. Her lower leg was rubbed by the shackles causing two open wounds, and her two front teeth are broken due to force-feeding. She was tortured to the extent that she was not able to take care of herself and was in a stupor for two weeks.
