One day, the director of the detention center told him: "I am a police officer. The government has promised us that it is OK for us to beat you to death." Then the director started to strike the face and kick Mr. Zhou's legs madly. Mr. Zhou was tortured like this for up to 12 hours and lost his consciousness for a few times. The director also used the electric baton to shock his head. 8 police officers took turns to interrogate him for 40 hours and did not allow him to sleep during the 40-hour interrogation. The criminals were ordered to beat up the practitioners after strip off all their clothes by using fists and shoes etc. A practitioner called Xu Shi-zheng was beaten to be black and purple all over the body. 23 practitioners are being detained in the Lu-lin-shan detention center of He-gang City. They got detained just because they had exercised their constitutional rights to petition the government to stop its persecutions.

In order to protest the illegal detention and inhumane treatments, practitioners started a group hunger strike. On the second day of their hunger strike, the authorities sent in many convicted criminals from the first and second detention centers of He-gang City. After some drinks, they started to beat up practitioners on hunger strike. When these criminals found that practitioners did not fight back while suffering the beatings, they said, "We don't want to beat you. But if we cannot transform you, we will be put on 'Di Lao' (a type of physical punishment). The official Zhang, the deputy chief police officer of the second detention center of the He-gang City, promised us that our prison terms would be reduced by one year if we could transform you." These criminals were treated with good meals for beating up practitioners. They are currently still staying in the first cell of the Lu-lin-shan detention center for continuing to beat up those practitioners who refuse to write the pledge of renouncing their beliefs.

The 40 female practitioners detained in the Luo-bei County of He-gang City had been on hunger strike for 5 days up to April 15 of 2000. Two practitioners had lost their consciousness. The hunger strike is still going on.
