BEIJING, Aug 17, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) A Falun Gong spokesman denied Friday four people jailed by a Chinese court for organizing a mass suicide attempt were group members and rejected the trial as another plot to destroy the movement.

"All along this has been an ugly performance created by (Chinese President) Jiang Zemin. It's purpose is to slander and frame Falun Gong and to create an excuse to destroy Falun Gong," said Hong Kong spokesman Kan Hung-cheung.

"We believe these people are not Falun Gong members because Falun Gong has all along opposed killings, including suicide. Real Falun Gong students wouldn't participate in a self-immolation," Kan said.

"The people involved are not real Falun Gong students. They are victims. This reveals Jiang's evil. It has exposed that his suppression of Falun Gong is cruel and he will stop at nothing."
