Man-made Catastrophes and Natural Disasters are Warnings to People
The most serious drought in the past 100 years has hit Shandong Province. There is a water supply crisis in the cities and the counties. Since 1999, Shandong Province has been suffering from severe drought for three consecutive years. In 2000 the cities and counties had a water supply shortage. In 2001 the farmlands affected totaled 44 million Mu (Chinese measure of land area, 1 Mu=0.1647 acre). The severe drought in the spring of 2002 cost more than 440 million Yuan. The drought this summer is the most severe in the past100 years. The farmlands declared to be disasters have reached 54.2 million Mu, with more than 7 million Mu of crops totally lost. Over 60 cities are lacking in water supply, and 3.66 million people have difficulty accessing drinking water from time to time.
