(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Zhang Lanying is a Falun Gong practitioner from the Jinshantun District in Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province. She is around 50 years old and used to suffer from numerous illnesses. She recovered completely after she began to practice Falun Gong in 1998.
Practitioners in the Jinshantun District were illegally arrested and sent to brainwashing facilities and labor camps after the persecution began on July 20, 1999.
Two officers arrested Ms. Zhang Lanying from her home in the middle of the night in October 1999 and took her to a police department conference room, where a brainwashing session was held. They forced her to pay a large sum of money. She was taken there again right before the 2000 Chinese New Year, but was released after having 500 yuan extorted from her. She was sent to the same place for the third time in April 2000. Officials from her workplace brought her back after nearly a month.
Practitioners Zhang Lanying, Zhang Xuemei, Wang Zhanfang, Wang Ziru, Yang Jizhou, and several others went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong on December 16, 2000. They were arrested in Tiananmen Square and taken to the Jinshantun District Liaison Office in Beijing, then returned and held at Jinshantun Detention Center. Zhang Xuemei, Wang Ziru, and Wang Zhanfang were sentenced to two years of forced labor. Zhang Lanying and Yang Jizhou were subjected to 18 months. Zhang Lanying and a few others were sent to the Heilongjiang Women's Forced Labor Camp on January 20, 2001, while Yang Jizhou was held at Yichun Forced Labor Camp for one and a half years.
Even as Ms. Zhang Lanying was being persecuted, her daughter was admitted to a police academy. When officials at the Jinshantun Police Department learned that Ms. Zhang was a Falun Gong practitioner, they threatened her daughter and would not let her attend the academy.
